      Actually I'm guessing it's well within their business model:
      1. it would be more costly to erect enough structures or underground facilities to perform the kind of work (and at this scale) that they do
      2. it allows us to see the progress, get more hyped about it and about SpaceX in general, making us more willing to support SpaceX both financially (Teslas, Starlink) as by fighting a lot of the "public fights" for them
      So it's a win-win :)

    The crane will be a good addition, i work regularly with one bridge crane and it turns stacking operations more organized and safe as the control can be used on the spot you need instead of relaying instructions to the crane operator, and also it will remove the need to use mobile cranes and all the floor space they take.

    • @williamswenson5315
      @williamswenson5315 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All good points. In the industrial setting, the precise movement of heavy pieces during assembly is crucial. Bridge cranes get it done and are amazing to watch as they do it. My compliments to the great operators I've watched over the years. You guys are unbelievable.

      Sometime in the near future spacex will decide on some process streamlining, when the starship design matures there will be application specific hardware, as flaps installation jigs, rocket engine replacement platforms,etc.
      There are some jigs present on site, but probably they are "trade secrets" and hidden inside the tents.
      One thing i would change is the number of segments used on the starship nose, i woud design a giant mandrel to form 4 segments and then weld then, that would make the nose structure more stiff.
      The problem is that i think there are no rolls of stainless that big on the market, it would have to be purpose built for spacex

    It is just incredible, the amount of effort that they put into making these videos every day is huge. Big props to NASASpaceflight, watching their updates has basically become a pivotal moment of my daily routine.
    It is also beautiful to see the history of space exploration being written in front of our eyes. Since the moment I discovered about the Starship project back in January I've basically found another reason to live; how can you not be uberexcited about what's going on? I know people that don't care about this but H O W. I mean, it is simply wonderful. Watching these videos also makes me realize how small and useless (in a good way) I am compared to each people currently working on this project. I was thinking about the “flaps” on starship and the function they provide. In aviation elevators control pitch and ailerons control roll. In situations where they control both pitch and roll they are called Elevons . Yaw is controlled by Rudders and on the starship yaw is controlled by the RCS thrusters. In aviation Flaps are used to increase drag while increasing lift. Also Speed brakes are used to increase drag (reduce speed). On starship both the front and rear “flaps” provide pitch and roll control as well as drag so using aviation terminology they should probably be best referred to as Elevons.

    • @John_L
      @John_L 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that the term flap on starships is thoroughly misleading from an aeronautical engineering point of view. Elevon is certainly closer but a new name is probably needed to uniquely identify what the control surfaces actually do. I wonder what the SpaceX engineers call them?

    That high bay bridge crane is no joke. I have worked in boiler shops in Cleveland and the biggest I have ever seen is 70 ton cranes. Even the bridge crane spanning the Hover Dam is 350 ton I think.

      18:54 is the length of the video. If you meant the delivery at 5:43 my guess is base plates for SH grid fins. I can't think of anything else that would require the displayed structural strength.
