Honestly, Puerto Rico needs to seek independence from The US. Statehood will not help at all, just ask those in Flint Michigan. Escape this corrupt government and then, hopefully, Puerto Rico can flourish.
Thank you for chiming in, John. Independence has received low support in previous referendums but I see it becoming a larger part of the conversation recently.

Statehood has done ill for Native Hawai'ians and the same would happen in Puerto Rico. Mainlanders already treat our precious resources and land as something they are entitled to exploit. It is time for PR finally be free of colonial control. Independence is the answer.

I think our island Puerto Rico (Boriken) should be independent... you see We are a commonwealth almost a state and We export more money to the US than the US gives us so If We are going to be like that as a commonwealth We will be like that as a state. So it's time for change... Independence for Puerto Rico.

I remember since I was little the topic of statehood or independence always coming in school and my thoughts was always independence. Then people would say that we would be nothing without the US and I always felt that we were nothing to the US so why would they keep us as a state?
The US has done so much damage to Puerto Rico. They do not respect Puerto Rico. All of the presidents say they want to help PR but don’t. They all love PR but they only love the money they get out of PR. It’s a disgrace. Puerto Rico needs to wake up and smell the coffee and see the facts. Independence is the way to go if PR wants to become the most significant island on the face of the world.
We are not a state or associate is all a lie we are only slaves I wonder why they don't release us ? I really wish Puerto Rico would become its own country. I hate the argument that people state when they say we would be a third world country without US backing. When the reality is, we're treated like a third world country WITH US involvement. Only difference is that the money we generate would finally stay within our people.

It’s true what you said, but the USA have try to help us. But our government is a disgrace to our country. And we know that our government don’t want to give us our money. Also we know they keep the supplies to help there friends no the people. Also our youth don’t want to work like we used to do it.

Ofcourse, otherwise we are in limbo. We traded one master (Spain) for another. We have no congressional representation and can't vote from the island only from the US.
Bianca, I congratulate you for your great capacity to transmit information in an educated and objective matter. Although tranquil and seemingly cool I see a strong commitment from your part to move the system into really serving the people. As to the status of the Island I prefer independence. I recognize however that our economy is dependant of the US and a transition to sovereignty needs to be well planned to be successful. Having Puerto Rico as a shameful colony has produced the results we already know. Statehood represents the annihilation of our nationality under the current constitutional frame of the US. That's my opinion in a short brief. Thank you for asking and I will be waiting with great expectancy your new documentary. Again, congratulations!

I was not born here in Pr but, I have lived here for 20 years, in those 20 years, I have birthed 3 children here in Pr. I have watched the island dwindle year by year both economically and in the spirit of the beautiful people. Government in Pr needs to be held accountable. Too often, funds go missing, stolen, or simply never go to the intended project. Yes, I think Pr should become a state. Its not the perfect solution, but it gives the Puerto Rican people a voice. It also allows culture to step away from financial aid.
@@mimi.lynn. yes I remember all of that. However, we are in a pandemic right now, imagine what Pr would be without PÚA or SBA or ppp. Where would we be? Look at some of the countries that don’t get government assistance.
I think statehood would be a slap in the face to our ancestors but Puerto Rico needs to be represented in congress. Our biggest issue is not having a voice at the table and the jones act .
It pains me. Speaking to my father on this I can hear his saddness, frustration and pain in his voice. Having lived in Puerto Rico the majority of my young life, I say NO to statehood. Free Associated State or Independence are much better choices that allows Puerto Rico to choose or carve its own path in the world.
You must be rich to talk like that. PR never will survived without the USA help. Maybe after becoming independent Venezuela take over and you be happy.

Puerto Rico needs to be independent from the USA, and a better government, it’s sad that a beautiful country is going down day by day.
If Puerto Rico becomes independent they will become the poorest Latin American country the world has ever seen. The United States has Puerto Rico by the balls. We either allow the United States to exploit Puerto Rico or we risk becoming independent where we will have absolutely nothing.

Acá hay una glorificación de la empresa militar como esencia de la identidad estadounidense. Sin embargo, la manera en la que tratan a los veteranos es horrible. El nivel de pobreza y la falta de servicios médicos para esa comunidad es un gran problema. Una situación muy contradictoria que, en el caso de los puertorriqueños, se acentúa con el problema que señalas.

Growing up in New York City I saw many neighborhoods in Brooklyn New York being ignored because there were a lot of poor people living in those neighborhoods. The minute those neighborhoods were gentrified that is when everything changed and the big co-ops and condos are still being built all over New York City to this day. Mostly all the poor people were pushed out. That is what I see happening in Puerto Rico. After Maria there are still neighborhoods in Puerto Rico struggling while the US government has put up the money but its at a standstill where is not being used for the right reasons. The island of Puerto Rico as more Americans move in to the island than Puerto Ricans moving in. So when the island becomes gentrified like many neighborhoods in New York City have become. it is then that the politicians will start throwing more money to Puerto Rico and more will be getting done. Puerto rico will become more Americanized. Until then Puerto Ricans on the island will continue to struggle. When you start seeing co-ops and condos in the town's when you never thought you see that in Puerto Rico that is when the government will come in and stop pouring in the money to Puerto Rico because by then it won't be Puerto Rico it'll be more Americanized.
Don't join the States. PR needs to stay PR and work it out w a public private relationship to get things done.

If you do care about the public, you do it in their best interests, build something up, recap the money, etc... A private entity will do everything for max profit, milking the population out of its wallet...
Build a public highway, everyone can use it, it takes a while, the money comes out of the tax payers but its there after a while. Let the private sector do it, you end up with a pricey tollway for centuries to come.

I would like to see that it becomes a capital offense when a public official gets found guilty for fraud, misuse of funds, and any other type of illegal use of public funds that would be a start - Because the trend needs to move toward a serious attack on corruption in Puerto Rico, the next step is to make public the process and name names of the local and Puerto Rico politicians that make a promise and do not bring it to fruition. Most importantly, you need to make these specifics public, easy to understand, and continue your work as a great explainer of truth, speaking for the ones with no voice in the halls of government. Puerto Rico does not need to become a state to be treated as humans with dignity and respect. Thank you for your work.... WHERE DO IT DONATE???
I need to thank you for enlightening many ive seen you around and your content is amazing we need to do something catch this sub.
As a Puertorican born and raised in the island and now living in the states, it infuriates me to see how the Congress has no hold ups appropriating funds here or abroad for things like war, but completely disregard its Colony and its people. Politicians are the devil in my view and this is coming from a US Marine, Military contractor for well over a decade and Police Officer. I have worked for both local and federal governments and the only thing that comes to mind is Independence! It pains me to see my people suffer and even more to see mi Perla en el Mar being abused and misused. This and many other issues in the island need to be addressed as a collective and leave the politics to the devils that they are.
I love your work and most of all, I love how you expose the reality of how the US is so great at causing our people the indignities and the sour of suffering… not that they haven’t caused enough already since 1898. Keep doing good work!

The military units in Puerto Rico has equipment and Engineering Soldiers who Can help to better the Island instead of letting the equipment deteriorate. Too much politicians with no solutions for the people. Fire them all
Dude, PR needs to get away from the USA... stop waiting to be rescued, and start digging. You need to divert that water away from the homes, and that can only be done with a shovel... not politicians.
They do a lot of work themselves but the dredging is a $150 million job and the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

This is totally unacceptable. The treatment of the Puerto Rico is horrible and the US government in my opinion needs a serious rebuild Puerto Rico campaign that would upgrade facilities, fix structures, and use new and innovative ways to improve the power infrastructure.

As a Puerto rican millennial , we need to move back to the island and preserve our culture for future generations. Education, infrastructure, and health should be main priority in Puerto Rico (vieques and culebra needs their own hospital !!) If Puerto rico became independent , hopefully the Jones act would become abolished (double tax on imports) on the same goods received in the US. Lastly, business/JOB creation is crucial to the economy. Puerto rico is rich in natural resources! We should focus on agriculture to not only produce our own food but to export it to neighboring islands and even the US for profit.

The obvious problem is lack of leadership with high integrity. People who lead and make decisions have to be held accountable. The people of Puerto Rica deserve better. I just hope they can get it done.

Here are just a few reasons why off the top of my head. (Not in chronological order)
-Ponce Massacre
-Rio Piedras Massacre
-Gag Law (Ley de la Mordaza) Law 53 of 1948 that imposed a 10 yr prison sentence for flying the Puerto Rican flag 🇵🇷 until 1952
-Jones Act taxation of import goods
-destruction and monopolization of Puerto Rico's own sugar industry
-PR per capita, if compared as a state to other US states, supplies the US military with more servicemen & women than any other state in the US....and yet the government doesn't allow PR citizens to vote for President or have a voting member of Congress.
-"Assassination" of Pedro Albizo Campos by radiation poisoning while imprisoned
-1956 contraceptive drug trials that used Puerto Rico women as guinea pigs without their knowledge that actually made a significant number of them sterile as well as the deaths during the trials.
WHY on Earth after knowing what the US government's track record in Puerto Rico is and the Federal government's historical view of us is, why would you still want to remain a second-class citizen in their eyes no matter if by statehood or as current status as a US territory??!! It's called the STOCKHOLM SYNDROME and that's exactly what majority of Puerto Ricans suffer from!
INDEPENDENCE is the only way for the future generations. I don't say it lightly knowing that it literally could take a full century to realize this and the struggles that would lie ahead but it is possible knowing all that PR has to offer!
The worst hypocrite rats and enemies of the Puerto Ricans are those who were brought to the USA by their parents or came by themselves looking for a better life, and then struggle as hard as they can for the rest of the people on the island not to have the same opportunities.
Those who want to see them like the freeloader aliens, drowning on the sea, leaving their family in the jungle, and crawling like snakes to get to the USA looking for a better life even if they are chased like stray dogs to be deported. Shame on them! They are neither good for the USA, nor for PR. Puerto Rico should go totally independent because trusting someone else to take care of your health, safety or best interests leaves too many Puerto Ricans vulnerable to the obvious greed and corruptions inWashington DC and in Puerto Rico's own government who have made it a practice to parade Puerto Rico's need so that they can get rich by the donations that come in to help them but never make it to the Puerto Ricans that need the help. Puerto Ricans have always had a big heart and gone out of their way to help others. Its sad that American politicians have lost their consideration for the very people that they're supposed to serve. Puerto Rico deserves better than this. Going independent will allow them to set their own rules through self government. They can look at how Spain and the United States have failed them and set up rules and regulations that serve all of Puerto Rico and not just the rich.
I’m for Statehood! It will solve many of the problems in Puerto Rico and will greatly benefit the people.

I honestly think that the problem at this point isnt wholly about statehood or independence or ELA, I think we need to work on our management and government, because I dont think things will get better until we have people doing relevant legislations and heads of administration that actually keep their word. Thats not to say that the status issue isnt relevant and important, but I think for either of those options we need an internal change that we can start doing now. We dont need to wait for a status vote to change and have a better education system for example. Im not really that knowledgeable in this since Im still young so if anyone wants to give me some info its gladly received😁
Btw, Im with Independence, if the US has never treated us right until now, what makes us think they will treat us better just because we're a state? Sure its gonna be tough being independent, but everything thats worthwhile in life usually is.
Funding is always going to be the largest barrier with any project. Statehood is the fastest road to solving the problems portrayed in this video.

100% in support of independence. It's the only action that is actually within the hands of the puerto rican people. All other options require approval of congress which will never happen. Also, Boricuas are more than capable of governing ourselves and providing for each other even better than under colonialism. We are being robbed everyday and then wondering why we are poor.
Our relationship with the united states is a toxic relationship, and you do not fix a toxic relationship by getting married. You fix it by leaving the abuser as soon as possible. It's long past time we left our abuser and began living a life of freedom and hope for future generations.

Independent is the only solution. You can see what happens to the locals of Hawaii, and Alaska. All resources are exploited with little or no return to their own state. Locals continue relocating and jobs are still scarce. Thank you for these reports.
But most of the islanders dont want independence and 53 percent just voted for statehood recently in a local referendum. Most people in the island want some sort of relationship with U.S.

They’ve been trying to get the debris and trash cleaned up for a couple decades? That’s the problem in Puerto Rico, everybody sitting around waiting for someone to do their work for them. The streets from one end of the island to the other are full of litter. Nobody lifts a finger to clean their streets.

As a U.S. born PUERTO-rican..I support what "MAINLAND" Puerto-Rican's want..The "UNITED" States SHOULDN'T DECIDE "THEIR fate"!
Thank so much for this informative video. You are so beautiful, with a brain and heart to match it❤ I love how you master both languages. You are definitely doing a great deed in educated those who don't know the struggles of our folks. I was born and raised in the states, but PR was born in me. Most people think that it's treated as well as the US. It's not a state and it's definitely not respected, nor treated as a US territory/Common Wealth of the US.
Firstly, all of these stories are so well done. Thank you for what must be a tremendous amount of work to accomplish.
I'm a little tardy with a response, but here are my two cents, for whatever they may be worth...
I am not Puerto Rican, and I have only visited once. I can appreciate that full independence is very important to many in PR. At the same time, I think that statehood might have some benefits that perhaps some haven't considered. I will mention but one potential advantage...
Based on population at the moment, I expect PR would end up with 4 representatives in the House of Representatives. Like all states, PR would have 2 Senators in the Senate.
I'm going to repeat something that most know, but the dynamics are not always contemplated. A Representative is elected every 2 years. A Senator is elected every 6 years. I have known quite a few people in the "Washington game", and they will all tell you that no one pays nearly as much attention to a Representative as they do a Senator, even if the Representative is Pelosi or Schumer.
So, why is this important?
I am from New Mexico (I live in Texas now), and for a number of years, Senator Jeff Bingaman (D) and Senator Pete Domenici (R), serving 30 years and 36 years, respectively, represented New Mexico, together essentially, in the US Senate. (Incidentally, Senator Dennis Chavez (D), the first American-born Hispanic US Senator, served NM from 1935 to 1962... Octaviano Larrazolo (R) became the first Hispanic American Senator in 1929, previously serving as Governor of NM before being Senator).
I mention Senators Bingaman and Domenici because they each had very high seniority in the US Senate (and therefore overall in Congress) for many years. They served on many of the same committees together, simply trading places as ranking member based on whichever's party was in power. Whether the Democrats or the Republicans, New Mexico still did well. They each held the highest admiration and respect for one another, and they always worked together for the best of New Mexico, regardless of their party affiliations.
Getting these two Senators to such senior levels obviously took time, but quite often smaller states, which is what Puerto Rico would be if she became a state, can place the same Senators term after term (we're presuming they are good Senators and not corrupt, etc.) more easily than can larger states. After only two Senatorial terms, a state could have two Senators who have been in DC for 12 years. In my opinion, this would be a VERY powerful political advantage for Puerto Rico. The power wielded by a Senator who is returning for a 3rd term cannot be understated. Having two such Senators, even more so, obviously.
And this is only one way that statehood could offer more (and well-deserved) influence and power for Puerto Rico. Each state has, under the Constitution, a lot of leeway for self-determination. Such could be afforded to Puerto Rico as well should she become a state (like, maybe, doing something about that Jones Act...)
To me, it seems that, at least in many cases, Puerto Rico has the worst of both worlds: none of the benefits of being a state but a lot of the drawbacks (a lot of communities in the States have neglected public works and other needs, not to say that they are or are not as bad as this abhorrent sewage issue covered in this story). Statehood can be a double-edged sword. There are very few states in the Union that feel that D.C. really cares about them most of the time; however, statehood would seem to be a vast improvement for Puerto Rico over the non-representative territorial status it has now. Statehood does matter in the US Constitution. A lot of Federalists will argue to the contrary, but statehood matters. And as many states begin to re-assert their autonomy from the federal government, this could actually be the type of shift which would benefit Puerto Rico as well should Puerto Rico become a state.
Whatever the outcome (statehood, independence, etc.), all the best to Puerto Rico and to her people. (and apologies for the verbosity... I got carried away...)
