Yeah he makes an outrageous profit. People will pay way over the odds just to say they've bought a guitar from Norm's. He's been getting away with it for years, which is kind of funny. But good business.
I must say that’s very good branding to sell somebody else’s brand of product (something he didn’t make) as if his very selling it makes it an extra select example of that product… He’s kind of a dealer lot used car salesman, they do get a decent supply of reasonably good units and get to pretend the purchase is more assured and convenient for the big dollar premium you pay. This is optional for you but it’s easy.
there was a really fine guitar shop where I went to college that priced vintage guitars fairly low. One day a Japanese business man walked in the door and bought the entire collection, no one will probably ever play those instruments again.
I had my eyes on that near-mint, time-capsule '59 ES-335 TD and then it was gone in a flash. Lucky buyer out there who will undoubtably cherish this guitar for years.......
Hey Norm, back in the 70s when you started the vault, were you buying new instruments and stashing them in there straight from the dealers? or was everything second hand then? Also, I'd hate to see what kind of insurance $$$ you're paying for that vault.
No way. If he had new old stock 1950s and 60s instruments, with shipping papers and tags and everything those would sell to elite collectors for an insane premium. They would mention the NOS status . In the 1970s, guitars were already not as good and there would be little reason to put away brand new ones, versus find prime examples from decades before. This leads me to believe that his minty stock are fluke finds from across America because the shop is so widely known.
I was thinking the same (having been a company fire officer) I hope that unit has two fire systems and 24HR (physical) security. Halon gas would probably be best - don't want the place flooding with water from above either.
You just made me drool on my phone .oh the memories these sweet babies evoke .I was privileged to touch and play instruments at top shelf level but, the real thrills for me are the "forgotten ones" that emerge from old Dusty closets that grampa put away but never got back to. I had to laugh when Norm pulled the Epiphone flat top out of what looks like a cardboard case. My '74 Epi lived in cardboard for 45 years until I discovered a new dreadnought Taylor case which fits it like a glove. Saved for posterity.
