    Hello Everyone. Please note that I am NOT in the position to provide any type of legal advice on this topic. I made this video as generic as possible to help with ideas on what to do if you get fired. There are ALOT of comments from ppl with very specific circumstances asking for my help that I cannot address. Thanks for understanding.

      If you were let go with a severance package, it's more like you were "laid off" than "fired." When many people hear "fired," they tend to think "fired for cause," which is associated with a serious infraction at the workplace. While losing a job in any capacity is demoralizing and can affect your self-esteem, the more you are out in the work force, the more you realize people lose their jobs all the time. The higher up the ladder you go, the more it is an expected risk with any job, and you actually become a desirable candidate when you're a free agent again.
      For anyone reading I would try to word it that you mutually decided the position was not a good fit and that you learned a lot and stuck with it. People who are part of Human Resources Department and/or in charge of employment know this happens frequently in the workplace world. I would definitely quote anything in your written performance reviews that show your "strong upward trend" and include a reference or quotation from one of the managers with whom you had a great relationship, if possible. Spin it that you can take it on the chin and keep fighting, make it a positive experience. It might actually help your application much more than you think. Good luck to y'all reading this!
      I’d say it’s also important TO NOT LIE about the reasons you were fired, but you also don’t need to tell your next employer every detail about what happened. You don’t want to paint yourself in a bad picture for your next employer.

    MOST employers in this day and age don't care about what you have done in the past(as far as employment is concerned). They care about WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THEM in the present.I'm 29yrs old and I've had 5 jobs in my life.Gotten fired from 3 of them and quit 1 job WITHOUT a 2weeks notice.I'm on my 6th job making 100,000K+ as a oil field truck driver.Slavery ended a long time ago and people should remove the emotion from work and/or working 1 particular job.This is my humble opinion.

    • @learnitfromwilliam
      @learnitfromwilliam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Agreed that most U.S. based corporate companies really don't care much about the employee base despite what many of them say. Bottom line is that it's very difficult in the work force these days and only getting worse.
      However, jumping from job to job especially in a chosen profession is not a good idea. But I do understand there are diff scenario's that can affect this.

      Information Technology Q & A Show Sometimes staying too long in one job is not good either. The majority of these companies are looking for specific skill sets and if you've been on a job for too long and you haven't developed the skill sets you would most likely be rejected! I read an article on the internet where this guy owned his own company and he saw resumes of candidates that stayed on a job for like 10 years or more - he automatically threw their resumes in the trash! Just some food for thought!

    I got fired because my skills weren't up to the level they wanted me to be. But they hardly even trained me. They were to busy to train me. And they never even gave me a warning. And the worst part is that I trained the person that replaced me. He's a mechanical engineer and they wanted to save money so they got rid of me.

    • @learnitfromwilliam

      It's unfortunate but that is common. One tip, NEVER rely on your employer to train you on skills that you should be acquiring on your own. They only need to train you on specifics that relate to their company only. Ie, home grown software, CRM applications, HR topics, etc.

      U r still better than my neighbor Cuong!
      Here's some motivation. U still have some time. U r not 60. My neighbor got fired when he was 50 around christmas 🎄 and his bday! How cursed is that?
      Take guts to admit u got issues. All humans do. U r not like my neighbor Cuong. He was arrested 2x for his rage against his supervisors! Then he got fired around christmas 2012! Sought revenge and retribution, lost 2 court cases to his employers, & lost thousands of dollars to attorney fees! The misery doesnt stop here. He doesn't go out unless necessary. No job. No vacations. No eating out. Doesn't celebrate any kind of holiday as he lost interest in anything socially-related.
      Almost no social interactions outside his family.
      Wife works and cooks for him daily. He has 2 junk cars sitting in his backyard and many other clutters. He also collects cans and bottles to get paid for recycling ♻️.
      I mean Cuong is a miserable guy who has no real, honest hope in his life anymore! That's 10 years of misery n denial of his major, mental illness conditions. He likes to put up a tough, fake front in front of others, but his pain and agony overpowers him inside. His false pride 😤 is what leads him to self destruction! What a shame.
      People on this site have more courage than 🐔 Cuong! A failure covers n lies about his issues. That's Cuong.
      U r definitely a good, useful person in our society! YOU ARE FREAKIN, PRECIOUS AND UNIQUE!
      Wish u accept Jesus Christ as your Savior so u can go to heaven after this life. God doesn't expect you to be perfect nor sinless. He just wants u to believe in Him as your Savior for your sins so u can go to heaven after this life.

    People hesitate to do this, but I learned a hard lesson a couple weeks ago. I was let go from a job I held for almost 22 years and the one thing I wish I had done was go to HR when there was a concern about my job and how I was being treated. People do not like to do it and some say it does not do much good, but GO. Get your concerns documented and show you were trying to make things better. I was advised by several, in my area and by past upper level mgmt to go to HR and did not. Don't be bitchy and whiny, if you have a legitimate concern and are not aware you were doing anything wrong, go to HR and talk about it.

      Lesley Weatherford HR is not there to protect you, it’s there to protect the company. They were created to make sure the company manages their “human resources” effectively and that means following the employment lawyers recommendations when firing or laying people off.
      In my opinion when they get health insurance figured out in this country, most people would rather work for themselves than work for an employer. Who the hell wants to be infantilized into asking to take time off, being nervous about leaving the office at the end of the day and being nervous about taking time off.

Although big companies supposedly have an employee assistance program who helps such employees who have a drug or alcohol problem, they really don't help them so I don't even know why the EAP even exists, they should just say that if you ever become unable to perform your job due to an illness or personal issue, then we will immediately terminate you so you will have plenty of time to get well although it would have to be without income.

    My first job McDonalds. Worst job ever i was working there for like 2 or 3 months they had my at the front register. I tried my best to work everyday for long hours but i have panic disorder to its complicated. One day i was working and i had a panic attack so i ran to the back and like moments later my boss comes yelling at me. " your on my time no one said u could come to the back blah blah blah" so i walked out. I came back the next day to get my check. The boss wouldn't even look at me i had to ask for my check from another employee no one would tell me i was fired until the boss pulled another girl to the side and told her to tell me to give in my uniform. Worst job ever

For that reason companies here will often as for a character reference which is normally someone who has known you for years and is willing to give a personal recommendation.

    Great advice. Pardon me for being nitpicky, but "right to work" means you're not forced to join a union. What you are referring to is "at will employment" which is pretty much all US states, though some may have a public policy exception or implied contract exception. My home state of New York is not right to work, and has both of those exceptions along with a few others, but employers can still fire you out of the blue and you may have no legal recourse.

The answer for that is to 1st step is to improve yourself and become a better person while addressing that flaw that got you fired... then the next step is you need character whitenesses that will recommend you to new job prospects, if you have improved they will even tell the prospective employer that you are in better shape and doing well.. I was recently fired but i dont believe i was ever given a fair chance. I wasn't trained properly to begin with. I made one minor mistake in the beginning but corrected it. Then I had an incident that was originally blamed on me but found out to not be my fault. I was placed on an extended probationary period for it even tho i wasn't at fault. Well i ended up being late one time in the 7 months i was there and due to being on my extended probation period they fired me. I have a job previous to this one that was basically the same thing. I had no issues there and only left because the other job was closer. I tried going back to my old job but they have a policy of not hiring back employees that resigned or got terminated. Should i even list the one i got fired from or just list the other one i had no problems at?

      Hello. It's a bit tricky to leave a 7 month gap on a resume. You'll have to craft up a great excuse as to why you weren't working if you decide to do that. OR just leave it on the resume and if they question you (assuming they call for a referral), explain the situation.

    Thanks for the video! I was recently fired yesterday. It was my first job out of college. I was given 30 days to improve my job quality and even though I felt I improved, but my boss felt I did not improve enough to justify continued employment. I had been in my first job a week shy of 5 months. At the time of my leaving, my supervisor told me he can put a good word for me. Some of my co-workers also told me they would put a good word for me.
    What is scaring me is that they might call HR or my boss and ask for how I ended employment in the company. I was told that the official word would be that the end of employment was due to mutual agreement, but I have no way to confirm that. If the reasons for my firing are out there (poor performance) I worry iI will never get another job.

      Hi Francisco. I'm assuming you're a young guy? If so you have two options.
      1. Don't worry about a future employer calling for references because sometimes they never do. And even if they do, trust that your previous boss will give you a good word. It looks to me that you didn't burn a bridge and it was mutual so I think you'll be OK.
      2. Don't put this job on your resume and it'll look like you're still "fresh" out of college and it's your first job. This wouldn't be a bad thing especially if the job doesn't pertain to the field you studied.
      Hope that makes sense.

    • @sntfrancisco31
      @sntfrancisco31 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the swift reply. I have thought about not putting that particular job experience in my resume, but that makes me have an 8 month gap between graduation and today that presumably I would have been doing nothing, which is a total of 8 months (on paper, since I was spending my time in the work I was fired from). The job description I held was supposedly a mechanical engineer job, but I hardly made any decision or anything at all that required engineering knowledge. So I am left in this awkward position in which I was in a job that has "engineer" in the title, but my responsibilities were hardly engineering related, while the other option is going back to my state when I was just a graduate with absolutely no experience.
      I hope This doesn't make my question convoluted. I hope it reaches you at a good time. Have a nice rest of the day.

    • @learnitfromwilliam
      @learnitfromwilliam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get it. Yea the word "engineer" gets thrown around so loosely that you really never know who truly IS an engineer. But that's OK. Just put it on your resume and see what happens. I think you'll be OK considering the circumstances.
      But even if you do leave it off the resume, 8 months after graduating can be chalked up to alot of things. Perhaps you had some personal things to take care of right out of school, finishing up some "projects", taking care of a family member. Know what I mean. It's really not a bad predicament to be in. It's alot easier at your stage than someone whose been in the workforce for 10 yrs and has an 8 month gap..now that's a crappy scenario...

    That's crazy, brother I got fired since my job went slow, and I apply for unemployment and I got approved!! It's money I paid all this years, no one is giving me a favor, it's my money, and it's time to collect them, I applyed and it shows how much I have in total and how much I'll get every week, I kept collecting for 4 months until I find a great job.

    Hi everyone 🤗, This is my 1st time being fired. I was wrongfully terminated, due to the fact that I had got injury on the job at a senior living facility, my position was a caregiver. Long story short my "ex' employment" fired me at a meeting that they wanted me to attend to which I did, but my "ex' employment" end up firing me in the lobby infront of everyone. I'm not sure what to put on applications "when they ask if you ever been fired? & also in interviews what should I say"? Do anyone has any suggestions? I really appreciate it :)
    Btw; I do want to get back into the field of healthcare, continue my work as caregiver, since my career/goal is to become a nurse. I need gain as much of experience as I can, since I took some time off for schooling....

    • @learnitfromwilliam
      @learnitfromwilliam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you go to the HR dept? That would have been the first thing to do especially if you feel it was a wrongful termination AND the fact that they humiliated you. How long did you work there? If you were indeed not at fault, then just explain what happened to future employers. As long as you're honest and genuine, it should be fine.

    I was wrongfully fired over talking to another caregiver about when can she start I wanted a weeks vacation . I also did more then beyond and over to make my client happy and even cleaning a cat litter box because her daughter Sabrina Bell is pregnant and walking a dog that was not a part of the job . July 15, ,2017 Lucille Bell said your services are no longer needed . I Even got housing to get her a walk in shower in her house . Sincerely Louise Snippert.

    Believe it or not but I have watched your video 4 times. As inspiration, while I do my work. Something about knowing that I could get fired being constantly on my mind makes me want to work really hard to not get fired, weird huh?

      @learnitfromwilliam  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad the video inspired you. I guess we all have different motivations and doing your best so you don't get fired could be one of them. Although if you do what you're supposed to and do it well, you shouldn't have to worry. Although there's no "job security" so just remember that.
      Thanks for watching!

      I appreciate your response. Lately, I have been feeling very overwhelmed with my job. I am a career consultant for advanced technologies on a cooperate level. I have considered lately that I need to find a new job, not because I am bad at the one I am currently doing but because the stress of juggling so many different clients (part of being a consultant) has caused some issues with putting work away once I get home with my family. I push 100% constantly but there is always more to do and I have trouble letting that go, especially working remotely and taking care of a 2 1/2-year-old child.
      Perhaps, this is a video you could possibly do? Learning how to separate work from home or perhaps knowing when it's time to move away from a job that may be toxic to you personally. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that job or company is toxic, just may be toxic for your situation whatever it may be.
      Anyways, appreciate that advice and wish you the best in creating more great career oriented videos. With the change happening in America, we will need more educational resources that will give great foundational knowledge in work ethic.

    Good video. It seems most companies these days if they are smart are going to simply say that all they will verify are dates of employment, salary and that’s about it. Aside from criminal activity against a former employee, it’s a slippery legal slope. A “bad employee” in 95% of cases is simply the opinion of the former employer / boss. A bad reference could be grounds for a lawsuit for slander.
    I am not an attorney either.

    • @learnitfromwilliam

    Got two write ups, one for calling out too much which included 4 days I left for a family death, so I couldn't call for the next 30 days so I didn't. Three days I either came late (which I never do) or left early. we are suppose to make up time but I usually cant due to other personal problems. For the day I did come late I made up the time but that wasn't good enough for my supervisor. She wrote me up in front of everyone I was embarrassed. I usually sign the write ups and don't talk back to the higher ups but this time I felt like it was unfair. I told my supervisor I will not be signing my write up and she said "we can fire you for your attitude you know that right? I'm saving your job by writing you up". Now I cant help but feel that she is out there to get me fired, what do I do?
    p.s she is leaving for maternity leave soon and I'm hearing from other coworkers that she might not come back after her 12 weeks.

    • @learnitfromwilliam
      @learnitfromwilliam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Alex, if you got written up for bereavement, then you should go straight to HR cuz that's bullshit.
      As for being late, that's on you to clean it up. Do everything you can to get to work on time. And I'm glad you stood up to her.
      Who is taking her spot while she's on leave? Whoever that is, you need to show them you're reliable and a great worker. In other words, make a good impression on them so that if she does return, you've got someone on your side.
      OR, if you want to quit, then weigh all your options first before jumping ship. Write down all the good and bad and see which way the scale tips.
      Hope that helps.

      Information Technology Q & A Show thank you for replying so quick. my supervisor isn't informing us if she is getting replaced. She doesn't give out much information. I did go to HR, and my supervisor found out and was very upset since she felt like I was trying to get her in trouble which she stated. She did inform me that in the state we are in,she can fire me for whatever reason. so looking into the work manual will not help me even if I have notes for an excuse absent. I try to ignore her but it's very hard when she has to go around the office and ask about why I call out since I'm not giving her a real reason.

    I was fired for approving a cash refund unaware that they paid by card.
    Employee called requiring help. The customer had his ticket stubbs and I do recall seeing him earlier by her register as I was walking into the office prior to the refund. I should have just checked the receipt just to play it safe cause corporate found out through camera that the tickets were purchased through card from her. Corporate downright terminated me when they discovered it and everyone else were encouraging me to fight for my position as assistant manager back. Truth is I was relieved. I know my actions were reckless and even the general manager thought that the most I should get is a suspension. Meh. I was grateful that they wanted to help me get my job back but **** it!
    I did acknowledge that what I did could have been a scam had it been someone else. It could have been an attempt to get money out of their card since they wouldn't be able to use the atm. I didn't make the transaction but I did make a foolish assumption that the employee took precaution if the customer was going to make a purchase that was over $200.00. I figure if the card was actually stolen and refunded through cash, someone would have visited questioning the transaction. Nope. It turned out there wasn't any scam and it was legit.
    Months later I find a better job at Dillard's a a Dock worker starting me off with $11.00/hr. Don't have to deal with the customers and most of everything is easy to do. I never come back home a filthy mess. Much better than being paid $9.00/hr when I was assistant manager.
    Some jobs just aren't worth fighting. I told some of my employees prior to my termination that if you are looking for a good pay then forget working at the theater! It should only be temporary. The theater is very stingy with the money. Dillard's should know I was terminated as I mentioned it in the application though they never questioned it during the interview. I probably won't ever be Sales Associate but I am happy with Dock.

    Yesterday I was fired.
    The reason:
    My boss told me a customer followed him around when he was out shopping and told him that I wasn't a good range safety officer (I worked at an indoor gun range and gun store). My boss also twisted my words with a customer about range safety.
    The hint:
    Twisting my words with a customer I spoke to about range safety.
    How did I handle it?
    I understand his reason, but I did call him out on twisting my words. He objected of course, and told me I was lying. I stood there staring at him the entire time as he did not make any eye contact with me the entire time.
    Despite being fired, I've shrugged it off even though it was a job I did enjoy doing. I simply told myself, "Whatever is out of your control let it go and move on." Am I looking for a job today? NOPE! Because my investment finally paid off. :D

I was willing to make up for it and then ended up getting terminated. oh well I'm not too stressed about it anymore there are alot more jobs out there for me than just qfc and it sucked but I learned a good lesson.

      jstar music Unfortunately, if you’re a non-union employee, you can pretty much be fired at will, especially during probationary periods. With Union employees, there is firing criteria managers have to follow first regardless of how long you’ve been there. So it’s harder to get fired for performance related reasons if you’re working for a place that’s unionized.
