I’ve been reading “Few Eggs and No Oranges: The Diaries of Vere Hodgson 1940-1945”. It’s also a Persephone book. It’s her diary of living in London during the air raids. I find it comforting because I think those circumstances would be much harder to live under - she maintained a full time job as well as volunteered. Every morning that she wakes up she is surprised and grateful. The city is literally blowing up around her and she carried on. I feel like she is writing to me saying, “we got through that, you’ll get through this.” It’s also inspired me to keep a daily diary recounting the news and my daily activities amidst the wave of history washing over us right now. Thank you for your posts and I can’t wait to listen to you read Alice in Wonderland. I was meaning to give that a reread. Jen, just thanks for being there for us.

I've been enjoying your channel so much Jen, but I only just found this video! The Harry Potter audiobooks were the only thing that comforted me during the start of the first lockdown, especially when I was first told to shield. I will definitely listen to them again when I feel the need. Agree with pretty much all of the children's book choices, especially the Angus Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging series, I think I've re-read that more than any other series, possibly even Harry Potter, and it's still so hilariously good. My other re-read that gives me so much nostalgia and comfort is the The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Those books are so good!

My top 3 of all time are Frankenstein, Les Miserables and Pride and Prejudice. My favorites that I read recently are Death or Ice Cream, Where We Go When All We Were Is Gone and Harry August. For the favorites that I read because of you, I will go with Bird Box, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? and Revenge by Yoko Ogawa.
Hope you are well and safe.

I am so glad to have chanced upon your video and your channel - your book recommendations are so varied and interesting! The Bookshop Book sounds lovely, I cannot wait to check it out.
The ultimate comfort reads are the Harry Potter books, for sure. I've been feeling quite nostalgic for the Nancy Drew series, Austen's books and Bridget Jones as well. Cry, Heart, But Never Break is a children's picture book which talks about dealing with loss in the most delicate of ways, and it could be a comforting read for many people during this difficult period.
I'd love to get a recommendation from you. Some of my favourite books are The Clockwork Orange, A Little Life, Betty Blue, and The Housekeeper and the Professor. I also really enjoy books that involve food and magical realism, together and separate, like the Chocolat series by Joanne Harris, Like Water for Chocolate, Mondays are Red and The Night Circus.

I'm a high school English teacher, and I love going to the theatre and hiking in my spare time. A few recent reads that I have adored are Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson (loved the humor and the wit) and The Child Finder (so hopeful and whimsical even while covering a dark subject). My favorite genre tends to be fantasy/magical realism, because I love myth and fairy tales. I've also been getting into classic "whodunit" mystery recently (7.5 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, Knives Out - I prefer these to modern thriller, not a huge fan of gritty novels). However, I will read any book that has incredible characters, at least some hope involved, and that can hook me from the get-go and not let me go!

I recently read Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, and it was both an emotional ride and yet strangely comforting. If you like memoirs dealing with psychology (one of my fav genre’s), I’d recommend Weekends at Bellevue by Julie Holland (memoir about working in a psych E.R.), Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan (memoir about a medical mystery misinterpreted as a descent into madness) & An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison (memoir about manic depression mixing theory & personal experience). The Glass Castle (Jeannette Walls) & Wild (Cheryl Strayed) were equally fascinating, moving reads 😄

@@jenvcampbell Rabbits for Food might also be of interest. It's about a writer with chronic depression and despite how difficult she and those close to her find their relationships, there is a real grit to the main character, Bunny which I really enjoyed and admired. Although I could only read it one chapter at time, the prose felt very dense which was also really effective.

I also like light, friendship books such as Love, Rosie by Cecilia Ahern. (It is also a truly lovely Netflix movie if anyone needs something to watch.) I'm currently reading the opposite of a comfort book since it is set in a world in which a pandemic has changed human civilization, but Station Eleven is very thought provoking about what do we value most. Hi Jen :) Thank you so much for being here for us, it helps a ton. And thank you even more for your offer of recommendations, I love the idea and it makes me very happy that you want to take this time for us.
I would like to ask for a recommendation for a friend, as I'm doing fine currently but she is not coping well with the situation.
She studies physics and often struggles with not finding much sense in the world and especially in her life. She describes this as a nihilistic view of life. She doesn't like that she views the world this way but it seems logical to her and she can't quite see it differently.
Right now this is even worse. Her usual coping mechanism she uses to find joy in the world despite all is spending lots of time with people, keeping very busy and connecting a lot with others. Which means that right now she feels even more lost than usual.
I would love to gift her a book that gives the message of 'not everything needs to make sense to be purposeful'. Something that tells her that her place in this world is valid, even if she can't understand it fully. Something that tells her that it's fine to feel joy and to relax.
Other than physics she enjoys nature (looking at beautiful trees and flowers for hours) , animé, Japanese culture in general, cooking, she is interested in herbal medicine, she boulders and she draws.
Edit: I'm so sorry this is so long

Hello lovely Jen, I am currently reading Plainwater by Anne Carson & would love another book recommendation like it! I love contemplative, even slightly philosophical writing that still have a sense of the personal, at times fictional, as well as wildlife/nature writing. I'm looking forward to your video's recommendations and have gained so much comfort and relief by taking time out to watch some of your videos during this time. Thank you for the community you grow through your channel. x

Hi Jen, thank you for all your amazing content. I cannot say ‘no’ to a personal recommendation. I love thriller, magical realism, Gillian Flynn and Erin Morgenstern. I appreciate your recommendations - two of my favourites were Lullaby and The Butcher’s Hook. Thank you again for all your incredible content. P.S. My recommendation for you would be ‘The Natural Way of Things’ by Charlotte Wood because I know you like ‘The Handmaid’s Tail’ and it reminded me of that. Please stay safe and as happy as can be expected given the circumstances. Thanks, Jess

I really would love more stories of gothic or fairytale fiction that includes queer characters and nuanced discussions of gender! I’ve read Carmen Maria Machado’s short story collection Her Body and Other Parties for school and for pleasure, and I would love to see what other authors do with the same themes! Lots of love 💗

Thank you for this video - I love the theme.
These are some books that I would recommend that are about serious and sad topics but are still quite comforting and life affirming.
Modern Nature by Derek Jarman - a memoir of a famous director who moves to a tiny cottage to garden after discovering that he is HIV positive.
The Outrun - Amy Lipcott - a bit like Names for the Sea but about a woman moving to a remote Scottish island. It's a great mix of poetry, eco heroines and nature writing.
I am currently reading a version of Charlotte Salomon's Life? Or Theatre? Art collection - it's a bit like an autobiographical novel told through paintings and it is so so moving. Charlotte had a very dysfunctional family life (her relatives were plagued by mental health problems) but she came out of her struggles with a desperate desire to embrace the joys of her life which was tragically cut short by the Holocaust. So sad but one of the best things that I have had the privilege to read in a long time.

I sometimes like to process events through fiction. I just re-read Station Eleven. And loved it just as much as the first time I read it. Other apocalyptic fiction I’ve enjoyed is The Last One and The Day of the Triffids. I think I crave the survival of these stories and the emotional journeys the characters take. If you could recommend something along these lines, I’d love it! Thank you for the lovely videos.
