  • Omonia Athens: This is a walking tour starting in the Omonia Metro Station in Athens Greece. I walk around Omonia Square in the day when it is less dangerous. Omonia Athens is dangerous at night with much crime, drugs and homeless people. I do not recommend walking around Omonia at night.

Okay here we go, stayed at the brown acropol hotel in omonia square for 4 nights in may 2022,lovely hotel and staff were so warm and friendly so much so we are returning next year in June for 10 nights, as for the square itself we are from the north of England from a place called Preston and I felt safer walking omonia than in my home town, yes it is run down in areas yes there are beggars on the streets, please tell me a city in the world where this doesn't exist, but overall the people were super friendly and really pleased to see and interact with us tourists, many people probably pick plaka as there go to place in Athens and while it is lovely please don't give other areas a bad rap before you try, as my dad used to say it's only a small step from park Avenue to skid row, it can happen to anyone so just to finish, we did take advice about safety regarding pickpockets etc. But like i said before every major city has them, enjoy Athens it is truly a remarkable city and can't wait to return 🇬🇷

Exaggerations, I've been there on foot day and night, till early hours of the morning, countless times. Nothing ever happened, it looks sketchy, with some people there, some addicts but noone really comes directly at you, except some to beg for a few change. Yes there might be pickpockets around, most of the times you won't even know it happened to you, still try to avoid crowds, be alert for your things and you are generally safe.

Why compare it with Asian countries and not a European countries as it is. I'm a Greek AUSTRALIAN and I travelled to ISTANBUL so clean so beautiful. I lived in GREECE for 12 yrs from 1973 - 1985 OMONIA was beautiful clean in those days unlike today dirty streets, graffiti everywhere, uneven footpaths & roads, dirty & deserted shop front windows the whole area needs a good overhaul. No comment on human discrimination, discrepancies & inequalities. 9:57

Well it seems they are doing construction in the middle circle of Omonia. There are metal sheets up blocking it off. I'm not sure what they are building though.

Was there in November 2022...it was quite vibrant at night too. Didn't come across any miscreants or untoward incidents....Being one of the busiest central metro stations, the presence of cops ensured safety. Seems like the authorities have worked on the safety measures and the changes are visible...Oh yes, the big illuminated and dancing fountain at the center makes the night stroll and the view lovely 👍

That was then, Omonia Square has changed a lot and has a stunning fountain in the center. I've stayed in 3 hotel very close to the square, the migrants know not to cause any problems as the Greek authority will intervene. Like most places at night, be aware of your surroundings!

It’s such a shame to see your own fear destroying your experience and potentially putting others off, Omonia isn’t any more dangerous than anywhere else... not a single person bothered you on this or the night time walking video. Whenever and wherever you travel you need to pay attention and keep your wits about you. In my personal experience, Omonia is not bad at all and actually well worth giving a chance. I will be back there in November and have chosen to stay in that area again. Also, Palia Omonia restaurant is an absolute gem for anybody wanting incredible, honest Athenian food.... ooh, and don’t miss Attika patisserie 🤤

I did the walk from Viktoria to Omonia to show people what it was like so they can make up their own minds. You are right, no one did bother me on that walk. But different people have different levels of where they feel safe or not. Some may think it is fine, while others may not. I didn't think Omonia was that bad especially in the day time until I talked to the girl selling sim cards by the metro and she was telling me things about what goes on in Omonia even in the day time. It won't stop me from going there, but it may make some people reconsider staying in that area.
