I was born in 1969 and discovered the Dire Straits in 1985. Mark Knopfler has been a part of my life every day since. The Dire Strait performed in Israel (My home) in 1985 and I couldn't get to the concerts. 34 years later I fulfilled my dream. My wife and I flew to Budapest in 2019 to see Mark Knopfler on stage. We sat in the first row!.
She's wrapt in the music, saying "it's so beautiful" - and the look on Andre's face looking at her, very expressive, I think he's thinking "you're so beautiful." ❤
I was at this concert, my first concert ever. Mark and perhaps this song specifically was the reason I told my mom, I want guitar lessons. I stopped listening to Dire Straits for too many years. Rediscovering it. About that concert .. read a review of the concert in local paper next day .. review went on about how those long solos were boring, I thought that guy was a raving lunatic.
I'm born 62 and i have had this in the back ground for my entire adult life. I do not take for granted that i was in full understanding how special music makers are in all these years. ❤❤

Do you know how they got the name 'Dire Straits'? They were flat broke (in financial dire straits) and used their last money to buy a few hours in the recording studio. They recorded their first (and best) album in one day but were rejected by all the record labels. They sent the recording to a DJ at a local radio station to ask for his advice but he loved the music and played 'Sultans of Swing' to his listeners who also loved it. Within weeks the same record labels who rejected them were banging on the door to sign them up.
Mark Knopfler IS Dire Straits. Musician, guitarist, singer and songwriter. Only Knopfler, Tchaikovsky and Puccini, have had me in tears with their music. I love Andrei and Domenika's reactions in these videos. Very honest and moving.
I can tell you I was 29 that night and was in that audience at Alchemy Hammersmith Oden London in 1983 and I’m now 68 and this will be one of the top three musical experiences of my life out of hundreds
I think Mark is probably the best storyteller musician that I've ever heard. As Dominica says, not only lyrics but what he does with the guitar. He moves you into such an emotional place, and brings you into the song as an experience. What an absolute master. I saw them in Brisbane in about 1985. They did not disappoint.
You are right, Mark speaks and sings through his guitar. He and David Gilmour both convey so much through their instrument, expressions with their fingers. Note their similar styles in the intervals, or pauses, between phrases, much like human conversation. Skilled and beautiful. Mark has the edge with his lyrics, in my opinion. Dominika, I fell under Mark's spell 45 years ago during my first listen to "Sultans of Swing" on the car radio, and--happily--the spell has never been broken. I truly understand your feelings regarding this extremely gifted man and his captiving music.

I was born in 66 and was very much into concerts from about 13. A huge regret is to not have seen Dire Straits. They were a VERY tough ticket to get a hold of.
I so much relate to Dominka's reaction here - because it is so wonderful and so easy to fall head over heels in love with music, with a particular artist or band - even on a first listen! In the end it doesn't matter how young or old you may be when you first fall in love with it. The artist and the music and the recording retain their power forever! great reaction to a wonderful song. 'Film noir' is a French term, which means 'black movie', so pronunciation is more like 'fealm nwahr'. I guess old black and white movie with Robert Mitchum as detective Philip Marlowe fit that description - many scenes half in darkness, in the evening, melancholy.

Can you imagine what it would be like if Dire straits & pink Floyd (especially Mark Knoefler & David Gilmour) played together? It so happens that the two of them are good friends, and have played together, but only in private. They both did much of their recording at Abbey Road Studios in London. I would give a lot to hear the two of them together.
They were both in a French and Saunders episode playing parts of money for nothing and another brick in the wall. Thats about as close as Ive seen them
I've always loved how Mark has used different guitars in his song to get a different sound and emotion ,his palm tree itched steel guitar in Romeo and Juliet, and here starting with the acoustic guitar. And, of course, so much of Mark's music is brilliant storytelling, which, for me, gives the music more impact
1982 and my wife bought me the Love Over Gold vinyl album. Every time I needed to calm, focus, for things like job interviews etc, I played Private Investigations, and it put me in a good place. I still play it when I need to. Thanks Mark

As you have referred, more than once, he does not use a pick to play, nor does he uses the "whammy bar" ou "tremolo arm", but most distinctively as his one feature, is that he plucks the cords mainly with only 3 fingers and usually rests his small finger on the guitar body.

I would definitely listen to On Every Street next. It's another Dire Straights detective song. I like to think it's the exact same character as in Private Investigations.
I describe this song as moody and cinematic. The composition and arrangement takes you right into a film noir scene in the most compelling way. The studio version, like practically every other track on the album, sounds spectacular and evokes the mood even more. Totally immersive.
There are two elements in this song that you need to pay attention to. 1) Mark's facial expression trying to appear as expressionless as possible. It's like he's trying to appear strong and reckless (maybe he's trying not to care anymore) for some reason. 2) Grasping the microphone with his free right hand as he says "Blinds in a window. And a pain behind the eyes." These two have an explanation as to the reason and meaning of the song being written. But I won't talk about it. Maybe friends who comment after me will mention. Cheers..

The progression from the studio version, via this one (Alchemy), BIA tours (like Wembley '85) to On the Night version, is quite a journey, where everyone gets to pick their favourite. For the last 10 or so years I've regarded the '85 version as the pinnacle of this arc (band and the song being mature, on the top of their game) vs. OtN version (band on their last legs, the version more of "an old man's version" ) The '85 version being already matured, but retaining the raw aspects that make the song partially heavy metal.

You really need to see Mark performing with a very talented group of musicians at A Night in London from 1996. There are a number of fabulous live performances including Darling Pretty & the best live version I have seen of Brothers in Arms. You will not be disappointed!!

IMO from the official versions the "On The Night" version of Private Investigations is far better than this one and totally different too. So you may want to check that out for your own pleasure. Before introducing you guys to Mark's solo material, which surpasses Dire Straits in all levels; I warmly suggest "Ride Across The River" (album version) and "Planet Of New Orleans" (album version, since no proper live recording) or "You And Your Friend" (live version On the Night)

He does it not natural, he went to bed with his guitar. In the beginning he played 8-12h a day, then it became natural for him! And he had some real jobs, one as teacher and one where he wrote articles for a small newspaper. They made the first album when he was 29 years old. Maybe that‘s the reason he never had big issues with dr&gs. After enjoying dire straits you should have a look at his solo albums! Thank you for your videos.
Always enjoyed this song, my acquaintance with it coming from a compilation CD. I tend to prefer their earlier stuff like this, one of my favorites being "Espresso Love", which has a wonderful erotic undertone.

I would definitely listen to On Every Street next. It's another Dire Straights detective song. I like to think it's the exact same character as in Private Investigations.

I describe this song as moody and cinematic. The composition and arrangement takes you right into a film noir scene in the most compelling way. The studio version, like practically every other track on the album, sounds spectacular and evokes the mood even more. Totally immersive.
There are two elements in this song that you need to pay attention to.
1) Mark's facial expression trying to appear as expressionless as possible. It's like he's trying to appear strong and reckless (maybe he's trying not to care anymore) for some reason.
2) Grasping the microphone with his free right hand as he says "Blinds in a window. And a pain behind the eyes."
These two have an explanation as to the reason and meaning of the song being written. But I won't talk about it. Maybe friends who comment after me will mention. Cheers..

The progression from the studio version, via this one (Alchemy), BIA tours (like Wembley '85) to On the Night version, is quite a journey, where everyone gets to pick their favourite. For the last 10 or so years I've regarded the '85 version as the pinnacle of this arc (band and the song being mature, on the top of their game) vs. OtN version (band on their last legs, the version more of "an old man's version" ) The '85 version being already matured, but retaining the raw aspects that make the song partially heavy metal.

Hey guys. Great reaction. This is one of my favorite Dire Straits songs but there is not too many people reacting to it, so thank you for that. That being said, I think the live version from ‘On the night’ concert is even better than this one (Alchemy) . If you really liked this song, check out that performance.
I discovered Dire Straits through my now late father. He used to listen to them all the time and he got me listening to them. You should check out Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy concert. You will love it. Trust me. Cheers from Australia

You really need to see Mark performing with a very talented group of musicians at A Night in London from 1996. There are a number of fabulous live performances including Darling Pretty & the best live version I have seen of Brothers in Arms. You will not be disappointed!!
There's this small drum part near the end that always sounds to me like a gun being cocked and then fired.
If you want to hear what Knopfler did with this song 35 years later, look for the video of Mark Knopfler & band (not Dire Straits) at Maddison Square Garden in New York on 25th September 2019 (I was there ;-)
It’s been four years since mark Knopfler last toured but he has a new album out next year so he may well tour again.

I am truly enjoying your genuine reactions. Mark Knopfler is a musical genious and his song writing has become better and better during over the 4 decades. IMO from the official versions the "On The Night" version of Private Investigations is far better than this one and totally different too. So you may want to check that out for your own pleasure. Before introducing you guys to Mark's solo material, which surpasses Dire Straits in all levels; I warmly suggest "Ride Across The River" (album version) and "Planet Of New Orleans" (album version, since no proper live recording) or "You And Your Friend" (live version On the Night)

One of the perfect masterpieces showing how Mark/Dire Straits can instantly draw you into a 'story'/'movie'...you've experienced the 'magic' of Mark/Dire Straits...to me...this masterpiece felt like I'm watching a Noir film/suspense scene everytime hearing it...just amazing 😅(Noir is French for Black)...Noir films are like dark/thriller/mystery/detective theme/genre kind of films...

He does it not natural, he went to bed with his guitar. In the beginning he played 8-12h a day, then it became natural for him! And he had some real jobs, one as teacher and one where he wrote articles for a small newspaper. They made the first album when he was 29 years old. Maybe that‘s the reason he never had big issues with dr&gs. After enjoying dire straits you should have a look at his solo albums! Thank you for your videos.
If you like Mark's playing you should also listen to Altamira, no singing just beautiful acoustic guitar.
Always enjoyed this song, my acquaintance with it coming from a compilation CD. I tend to prefer their earlier stuff like this, one of my favorites being "Espresso Love", which has a wonderful erotic undertone.
