  • On January 24th a host of star drummers descended on the Observatory in California for the Bonza Bash NAMM Jamm, spearheaded by Brian Tichy. Each drummer picked one Led Zep song and performed with a killer house band.
    In this video Toto's Simon Phillips performs 'Trampled Under Foot'.
    We interviewed all the drummers involved with Bonzo Bash about their love for John Bonham and you can read all about it in the April edition of Rhythm Magazine.

    Finally a drummer at these Bonzo tribute drum shows that 'grooves' instead of just bashing the living daylights out of the drums!! Thank you Mr. Simon Phillips!!!!

    What most people don't know unless it's pointed out is that Bonham used to accent the off beats of the 8th notes on the high hat. Not the down beat like most of us do. That's what gave his playing that swing!!

    Bonham always gave the illusion of being laid back in the pocket but in reality, he really pushed and swung his grooves even on slower and mid tempo songs. Simon is trying to lay it back a little too much. Still a beast though.

    • @philenns6797
      @philenns6797 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Perri Simon Phillips aside, the sound of the drums don't, by far,
      stack up to the "Bonham sound" for whatever the reason.

    • @glenamaddy5947
      @glenamaddy5947 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill Perri are you sure it was Bonzo creating the illusion? I love Bonham, but it's John Paul Jones who did all the really clever musical stuff in Zep. Bonzo gave the appearance anyway of being primal etc, so I have always wondered exactly how much thought went into what he did as opposed to just playing, if you can understand what I mean. JPJ strikes me as a guy who can play and who can think about what he is playing. That's why Zep worked. Page out front showing off, Bonzo doing his thing and JPJ working out what, where and when he should play to make everyone else sound good.

    • @naccibobacci
      @naccibobacci 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Patton I agree, very well said.

    • @glenamaddy5947
      @glenamaddy5947 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill Perri Exactly the point I was making, though I may not of put it as clearly as I wanted. My point is that JPJ did more thinking in Zep than anyone. Bonzo could only play that way, so yeah, it was his feel and his size (you know about his past as a hod carrier? That gave him strength and all that stuff matters when it comes to producing a sound.) Bonham was doing his thing, you could say, but JPJ was thinking 'what's best?' He was, in my mind anyway, Zeps secret weapon and that's why he has so much respect from musicians today.

    • @glenamaddy5947
      @glenamaddy5947 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Perri Do you know the story behind in thru the out door? Plant made that ecord while in a wheel chair after he lost his daughter in a plane crash. You know the whole 'Page sold his soul for success' story, well, the misfortune that came before In through....is given to assert that is in afact ture, that Page via his association with Crowley sold out Zepp to gain success. I'd advise doing an internet search about greatest forgotten albums, at least that's what I remember the heading of the article I read was called.

    despite many accurate and obvious observations below, another factor here... indeed, this guy sitting behind the kit, is perhaps one of the greatest drummers on the planet ( in his 'own' element) but....despite a handful of 'other factors' taking place here ( some saying keyboard guy rushing... big surprise with keyboard players! lol! .... as a drummer myself, i've experienced this consistent phenomena, for years...) and maybe one or two others playing along, not giving the 'time' and groove it's due, our boy Simon, clearly, is also ...well out of his element. for one thing, he probably feels a bit 'naked', suddenly going from sitting behind his 'right/left' setup monster-kit with two bass drums, all those accessories, toms on 'both' sides, chimes, cymbals, 'everywhere', 13 pedals on the floor, etc.... he's completely exposed and visible here, with 'far fewer things to reach out for, and hit with 'either hand' ( as he can do, so well...) and 'reduced' down to the classic, one-rack tom setup. think of how this would 'play' on one's mind, who has sat behind something 15 times bigger, his entire career? 2nd, he's struggling a bit with the fact that, "He's a lefty, and "this kit-setup, is normally 'best-played', as a righty. meaning, Bonham did. and so many others. it's just 'what you do', on this Kit. right arm-crossover, and all that. so, it doesn't even really 'Look" right, to try and bring the 'check-this-out!.."Phillips" ambidextrous technique, over to this simple, classic rock-drum-arrangement, does it? so, he's sort of half-heartedly 'laying into' this, and....it shows. lastly, Zeps rhythmic construct and 'groove'.... isn't, and 'wasn't ever, Phillips cup of tea. he cut his teeth swimming in the realm of 'progressive, very-technical' applications of Tune-smithing, even erring more on the side of a "Jazzy" element. that 'caveman, slow-dumb, basic heavy-hitter style, 4X4, was never Simon's forte'. he's GOT to play more than that. given these observations, i think it's clear this was 'not the kind of 'sit-in', mr. Phillips could 'shine on'. if you want to see someone just Kill, this Bonzo stuff.....Jimmy D'Anda and Brian Tichy. Kottak did a respectable job too. 'those are our 'rock hitters'. Simon, is Not. he brings a more complex, 'artsy, and even a 'softer-touch', to his game.

    No Simon is not swinging with the groove. This song in particular is all about the swing and the kick pattern. Even the count in he does is to rigid and hard on the 4/4 plus the flams during the fills are to jagged since they don't extend the bar like Bonham did on the recording, there is a slight rest before going back into the song. I honestly believe Phillips didn't practice this song before hand since he seems to have no idea how it goes. His kick pattern is so far off the mark nothing even close to a triplet feel plus his fills feel like reactions to the other players not compliments to the rhythm pattern. Really bad for a pro.

    This is so called “technical” drummer and Bonham was so called “old schooler” but in reality the drummers like Simone don’t have the wrist and in reality Bonham had brutal technic and the most powerful wrist ever. Technical is not to play mathematical feels and “fansy” stuff, technical is to have the ability to move the wrist in as many as possible positions around the drum kit.

    This is very surprising. Simon is clearly fighting the band here. He is sat right back on it. The band are pushy. This is where a teamwork ethic comes in to play. They can play there own way all day long, but it's not going to gel. I've seen Simon play a few times now and as great a player as he is, he has a tendency to sit back a little on the tempo more often than not. I think this time he could have pushed a little bit more. Bonzo had an amazing way to play behind the beat slightly, but still push the song along with energy. Very hard to do. Sounds like this is dragging because the band are fighting two different feels of the same song. It's useful to hear.

      Very good observation, I agree. I know that when I play with someone I have never played with, if that is the case here, I need to feel them out a bit. Sometimes though it gels immediately, that is the best. Not enough pocket for Simon on this one. Bonham drove every song he played.

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, something was definitely off, at the start I was complementing Simon in my head for laying so far back and then it seemed to fall apart. I don't have a good enough ear to know who's to blame.
      I was also realising that not even Simon Phillips can make this groove like Bonham did. Not even close.

    Wow so many world famous top line drummers on here criticising Simons playing. Let's hear you guys do better ! I tell you,being a right handed left hand lead player using someone else's kit set up as traditional right handed with the hi hat Hi and the snare Low makes things very awkward and uncomfortable to play. Especially the left shoulder ! Derek on the keys was definitely playing out of time in places which wouldn't help and this seems to have been an impromptu guest slot,who's to say SP & D haven't had a few drinks before jumping on stage ... Hic hic !!!
