I'm from Louisville and the moment I saw your video, my mind instantly thought of plush mountain and the displays at the top of the store. You were spot on.
I used to go to the Louisville Disney Store A LOT whenever my mom, Mike, and I went to Oxmoor Center in Louisville to do some shopping. I also went there with my Dad whenever I went to Louisville with him. I sure do miss that.
There was a Disney Store at the mall I grew up going to in South Florida. It opened in either 1995 or 1996. It had it’s “plush mountain” in the center of the store. The entrance had the classic Mickey head from the cartoon openings, made of terrazzo. It felt like they took a piece of the theme park and grafted it into the mall. It was a good way to get your Disney fix without having to drive 3 hours [to Disney World]. I found out that this one too closed in 2020. It had been 18 years since I moved away from the area by that point.
It's pretty sad to see a lot of Disney Stores shut down in shopping malls although there is still one that is active that I found, the one in the Ontario Mills Mall in Southern California. I actually kind of miss the ones in Moreno Valley and Tyler now. :(
I used to go to the Disney Store as a kid, and it was the part I always looked forward to whenever my parents and I went to the mall. It was a big part of my early childhood and I agree that the plush mountain was the most exciting part along with the TV behind them that played Disney promos and clips. When walking into the mall, that entrance always hyped me for going inside, and I forgot about how it had a unique smell until you mentioned it. Now remembering that part makes me a bit sad since I'll never get to experience that smell ever again. I lost my Disney Store when I was 11, and right after Christmas. I was upset because one of my favorite childhood stores was gone and it was the best part of that mall. These days, the same mall has more stores that appeal to me such as the Lego Store, Build-A-Bear, Hot Topic, Box Lunch, Spencer's and Claire's; but the Disney Store is something that I'll always miss about going there. I'm glad Target has its own Disney Stores now, but I agree that they're just not the same since they lack the statues, plush mountain and everything. They're basically just Disney sections in the toy aisle.
We had a Disney Store in my town, Saugus Massachusetts. It was located inside the Square One Mall, and I have many vivid memories of the place! It indeed was a 1990’s style location, and I wish that we would still have it today. 😔 😞 When the location closed its doors, it was replaced with what I think is a women’s clothing store. Such a shame that such magical retailer stores (i.e. the Disney Store, Toys “R” Us) get replaced by generic clothing stores and stuff we already have in a town or city.
Damn. My local Disney stores went through those same and similar fates. We had several Disney stories in the Cincinnati area (where I live) including Northgate, Springdale, and Kenwood. The one that I remember going to quite often before it closed was the one in Springdale. It was in Tri-County Mall, and my parents would take me to that store, which I bought some plushies from there, including figurines. The one in Tri-County Mall was the one that I remember going to that introduced me to the world of Disney. I was told that the ones at both Tri-County Mall and Northgate Mall opened in the 90s, but in different years. Unfortunately, they both closed in 2008. The one in Northgate closed in January of that year, and became a dance studio years later (which is still open today). The one in Tri-County closed in July of that year, which was devastating because the mall was doing fine before it went downhill, and it became a jewelry store called Glitter, which closed and the mall is now closed for good, unfortunately. The one in Kenwood had its interesting relationship with Disney. The original Disney Store at Kenwood Towne Center opened back in 1991, but I’m not sure when it closed. However, they opened a new location in that mall in 2011 until they closed in 2021, and I went to that store, a lot. I bought several kinds of merchandise there, not just plushies. The only Disney store that’s currently open in my area is the one in Monroe, but it’s called Disney Outlet, and that opened in 2009 along with the rest of Cincinnati Premium Outlets, if I recall.
This store ment a lot to me growing up in Louisville because as someone who always wanted to go to Disney World but whos family couldn't afford it, this was like our own little Disney World.
As someone who loves Mickey Mouse and Disney, I wish the Disney Stores remained. It's a place where you can experience Disney magic, without visiting the parks. I'm glad I visited my local Disney Store in 2020. I bought a Sorcerer Mickey and Christmas Mickey plush there. Just recently, I visited NY's Disney Store. It was so incredible and big. I bought 4 items there.
This was my hometown location too - it just pains me to see a store so staunch in its aesthetic ways be steamrolled by the minimalist wave. It breaks my heart - now everything feels bland
7:28. They were definitely not limited to Pink & Green. The later Piperail design had statues extensively, though I agree with it rivaling Plush Mountain. Heck the characters are what I miss most, and for whatever reason I didn’t have a Pink & Green, so my stores were straight to Piperail. As for the front display, I saw other videos of different characters moving like Donald in a rocking chair. And at one point both had animatronics, at least in some cases.
I don't go to Louisville much (hate driving in the city lol) but I went to this Disney store not long before it closed down with my best friend. As soon as we entered they gave us both a couple stickers and let us roam around looking at the different toys. I didn't buy anything there which I regret, but it was a great experience. I didn't even know it had closed down until a few months ago when I revisited the Oxmoor Center with my bf and saw that it wasn't there anymore. I was pretty sad because they had a Stitch plush I was interested in getting, and I like buying in-store more than online personally. :(
The Disney Store I went to a lot as a kid was at Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, NY. The only purchases I made from that Disney Store was a Little Einsteins rocket plush and a Winnie the Pooh plush. Ah the memories 😢
Hey man, want to say thank you for for using my pictures and video I really do appreciate it and thank you for adding this on to your history of the Disney store
if you want more louisville topics i would love to hear a history of the mid city mall! i've tried to research it casually over the years but can never find much and am never quite dedicated enough to go dig into microfilm. thanks for the nostalgia trip - the animatronics were still on when i was a kid and i loved it, even if i wasn't really a disney kid otherwise
YES I agree! I would also love a history of the Oxmoor mall (which I guess is sort of covered in here). I remember playing on the pirate ship playground that was in there in the early 2000s, but I can’t find photos of it on the internet anywhere.
I didn’t even realize it permanently closed a few years ago. 😭 Even though it closed when I was 12. I’m glad me and my younger siblings got to experience it for a little while.
used to love going into this store as a kid i vividly remember begging my mom to get me the spiderman web shooters too the only disney store we had in louisville closed down a couple years ago so im a bit nostalgic right now
I use To Love going to The Disney Store as a kid & as many times the store near me would change their new look. Nothing beats how it was in the 90s. I so wish it would come back in it's original Form...but somebody named "Bob" changed all that.
I LOVED the Oxmoor Mall Disney Store!! It was my favorite mall store, and it was the closest I ever came to experiencing the parks! I can even remember when the Warner Brothers Studio Store was right across from it in the late 90s - Oxmoor Mall was a great place to go if you loved animated films! I also loved Plush Mountain (sometimes I call it "Mount Plushmore" too!). In fact, I think that the very first time I was brought to the Oxmoor Mall Disney Store when I was very young, I was utterly enthralled by Plush Mountain, and I stood there gazing at it, slipped off my shoes, climbed in and snuggled in with all the plushies - until I was yanked back out again at the urging of a distraught cast member! At 2 or 3 years old, it didn't occur to me that I could not do with a store display of plush what I did all the time with my stuffed animals at home😅 My favorite Disney Store items were definitely the plushies, especially the mini bean bags! I still have a bunch of them - my favorite childhood bean bag plushies were/are Flower the skunk, Dumbo, and Piglet from Winnie the Pooh. I loved Disney Tsum Tsums, too, when those were released years later! And, I can totally believe that the 429 store cast members were like a family to one another - I remember them being some of the nicest people working at Oxmoor. I'm glad to hear that they got to have so much fun together, with all the different exclusive events. In the 2010s, I even sort-of became friends with the assistant manager (at least, I *think* that was his role)...he was always the first one to greet customers and offer assistance, always had a smile on his face, and when I felt self-conscious about browsing/buying plushies as a young adult, he would smile at me encouragingly and say, "I see you found some new friends!" In another Disney Store-related TH-cam video, someone revealed that Disney Store cast members are told something like, "each guest deserves at least 30 - 40 seconds of magic" (can't remember the exact amount of time), and well, the assistant manager at the Oxmoor Disney Store offered that, and more.💖 I hope he's been doing okay since the store closed in late 2020, given that the closure occurred on such short notice (I'd been afraid of that). Anyway, this is a terrific video - thank you so much for the nostalgia trip! 😃
I have a idea do you Toys “R” Us history videos in different locations like he did with Chuck E. Cheese’s start with Houston, Texas and then other locations each week
The Disney store in Glendale Galleria what is not a thing anymore and also another location like somewhere I forgot what the name was used to be a Disney store now it’s a Funko store.
I miss mount plus more but I had no Olaf. My Disney store was in the 90s so I had Simba, Pluto, goofy Mickey’s Pluto buzz and woody and much more mine was in Wisconsin
I also remember there used to be a Disney Store in my area at the Mission valley mall! I remember going to the mall last time but the Disney store was not there anymore sadly
I remember the Disney store. I had some good times back then before they started closing down. Mostly, I play with the princess wands with a mirror where the princesses told their iconic stories. It's still a sad shame that I never got a Disney imagination key to this day.
Maybe try to a full history of something like SHOWBIZ! I’m pretty sure it will be fun to record! (Also if you want to, you can give me a shoutout if you accept this idea suggestion! Can’t wait for the cec vid!)
The Disney store is was my favourite store to go to at the mall so sad that its gone the store was so much better than the target Disney sections target is less magical and like the plush selection is crap there's basically nothing but basic Disney parks/shop Disney merch and they sell non disney parks merch their heck I still see toys from the trash lightyear movie

It must be so nice to have found all these pictures of your local Disney store. I've had the hardest time finding any information of mine.

The one in Mall of America was closed and was replaced by a Warber Parker store (In which they sell glasses)
Cried and howled a lot when it shut down entirely in September 2020, although Fabletics still remained open for a year.
OMG, childhood activated that original Disney intro highlight of my childhood
This very well documented and I like this video so much! I use to have a lot of memories with The Disney Store as well.
im a hour from there and this just randomly poped up wow
Disney shouldn't be saying nothing about rent being high. Have u seen the cost of tickets, hotels, and not to say WDW and their cruises smh.
Corporate communism I tell ya 🤦♀️ (not actually communism BTW just making a joke)
RIP the disney stores. I loved you.
I didn’t even realize it permanently closed a few years ago. 😭
Even though it closed when I was 12. I’m glad me and my younger siblings got to experience it for a little while.
I had memories go to my Disney store getting the tsum tsum and the mickey mouse clubhouse toys I still have it today 😢
Was the Louisville Disney store the last one to maintain the 90s theming and decore?
