Your videos are really nice, and informative, such a humble person you are, explains everything, keep up the good works, hope your all Orchids do great for you☺👍👍👍..
Hey Michael, what a great purchase, the blooms on that clowesia are amazing! My only recommendations would be a container half the size of the one it's currently in. Catasetinae types in general don't like to be overpotted, in fact, the smaller the better. And for the best success, you should only repot them in the spring or as they approach coming out of dormancy. It's still the growth season and any disturbance to the root system at this point can only have negative consequences. Though your plant may not be "growing", it still has green leaves which need to yellow and fall off, and the bulb needs to finish maturing and harden off before it actually goes dormant. Trust me, I've made the same mistakes numerous times and have lost many a catasetum and I don't want you to learn the hard way. There's a webinar from 2015, I believe, presented by Fred Clarke on Catasetum culture on the AOS website which I highly recommend. Good luck with it and have a great weekend ;)
Hi OrchidudeBcn, thank you so much for the feedback! Let me ask you: when you're waiting to repot something like this, what preventative measures are to taking to ensure the roots aren't compromised/pests aren't a problem? Sometimes I work against my better judgement for fear that there is a bigger issue lurking below the surface!
Michael's Orchids catasetums are easier because it's just a question of getting them through summer/fall and then they go dormant. Once that happens you can do whatever you want with it; unpot it, cut off all the old roots, or not, repot into whatever media you want and just leave it be until the spring. It just so happens I'll be receiving a cycnoches next week, probably potted, so as long as everything looks ok on top, no rotting growths or bulbs or desiccation, I let the media be for the remainder of the growth cycle, about another two months or so. Once it goes dormant I can accommodate it the way I want without risk of disturbing it. I hope this helps ;)
OrchidudeBcn I have a wine delight. It's still alive. U should research this plant and let us know. Lol. They seem to be different... or can be... It's over 1 yr old and bloomed for me. In my experience I don't think I should have given it such a harsh dormant period. Perhaps it was something else but that's my instinct. I wish u great luck so u show us how to do better next yr. Xoxo
I just got my first catasetum too. A cycnodes wine delight. I also put mine in semi hydro...! I tried to keep it in the moss it was in... I really tried hard to leave it alone... and not think about what might be waiting for me in the media. But it wasn't smelling so fresh and I couldn't take it any more. Fingers crossed for both of us that our catasetums forgive us for disturbing them at this time of year!
You hit the nail on the head! I know it's best practice to not disturb them at this time of year, but sometimes I feel as though not immediately assessing the root system can be a death sentence in and of itself!
Thanks Michael, informative as always, yeah, not nice finding bugs!! Still moving on, I recently purchased a Clowesia bulb on eBay and it was really expensive I thought for one bulb, £38, but it's the first one I've seen for sale. Looks nice and green and healthy and the guy said should flower after the next bulb grows, it's currently in its dormant stage and should come back into growing stage in the next few weeks! 🤞it does!
Mine is in leaf but only about half the size of Michael's and I can see new roots coming from the base as well as a few that have already grown somewhat. Are you going to put yours in S/H too?
Al C actually semi water culture. I didn't have much luck with semi hydro, but am an avid fan of Michael' videos, and I watch people who grow in various mediums as you can pick up so many great kernels of knowledge and adapt them to you growing system.😊
I think the impatience comes hand in hand with the passion. My husband, at least, says that it's one of many qualities that drew him to me. He's very quiet, balanced and it takes a whole lot to rattle him, whereas I tend to be always "on". I'm betting your husband appreciates your exuberance, too. LOL Anyway... I went to a second hand store and purchased some large art brushes. I'm hoping they will help clean off old potting material. I am afraid I'll pull when I shouldn't and ruin roots. I hope it works. So now with your new "system" when will you be using the Physan20 and the KelpMax, if at all? Oh, and why the *blue* Dawn? I'll go get some, but I use Dawn dish soap anyway, just not blue. So I'm wondering why so particular. Thanks. You and MissOrchidGirl are my favorites. I"m sure there are some others that are good, but I'm very sensitive to voices.
Aw, Nancy! This is one of my favorite comments ever! My husband and I are very yin and yang, he is quite shy, calm and reserved. It's the best kind of balance, as I'm sure you know with your man! I really like the brush idea! I'm so clumsy that with or without a tool, I'm sure to be overly abrasive. I'm currently reassessing my relationship with Physan 20 as I gain better understanding of beneficial bacteria. My primary objective with its continued use is algae control, but even that is in question at the moment; I'm reading a lot of literature that tells me that algae isn't much more than an aesthetic nuisance, and it's presence is indicative of a healthy grow environment. I still use kelpmax as a monthly treatment, I just don't mix it in with Fertilizer anymore. I just add it to distilled water and give my plants an hour long soak! Thank you so much for watching and for being so kind!
Thank you. It seems to be philodendron bipinnatifidum. It really contributes to a tropical feeling. I have looked for a plant like that with low light requirements (that is NOT a cheese plant) for a long time. Thanks again.
I love your plant! Awesome! I bought 2 of this type last yr. I treated them both the same for spider mites (these REALLY attract them with our climate) and killed my black pearl quickly. My wine delight is still alive and I shouldn't have given it a winter rest😕🤔. Go figure. Good luck with yours! I'll try them again at a later date when I can control the environment better. Xoxo
I recently repotted my "no name" oncidium (not sure if it is) and I had one very small group of bulbs leftover, so I put them on top of the balls with almost minimal to no roots. Two old bulbs died, but one is still green. Did I do this correctly or did I waste my time? Lol!!!
Hi Yolanda! Hard to say without seeing it, but placing the bulbs under the leca beads can cause rot pretty quickly. It sounds like you did as I would have, but every Orchid is so different!
Hi i missed a lot of videos. I got my Fredclarkeara svo after dark black pearl amd cycnodes wine delight from ebay. I havent repotted it i did pluck out a bit of the older soagnum and pusbed some new spagnun in. Cuz...If you disrupt the roots in theyre growing season they can abort all their roots. And then it cant mature and fo wel into dormancy. Anyway i keep my figter crossed yours is soo much bigger then mine mine are young and need another year before they can bloom. I did got a lot of cool new orchids 7 of them so if you have time come check them out. Ps i Wil watch the others when i gor a beep of time ps i dont get your notifications anynore. Kind regards rose Ps your husband is so cute giving you more orchids.
Hi Rose! Yes, I will absolutely watch when I find a spare moment: my work schedule has been a bit unmanageable for the past month, which is also why I haven't posted any new videos! And my husband is truly the best ❤️
Your videos are really nice, and informative, such a humble person you are, explains everything, keep up the good works, hope your all Orchids do great for you☺👍👍👍..
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me, Govind!
Looks great in the new pot. I love the plant in the background.
Thank you, I love my big philodendron ❤️
It's so nice to find another picker! The dead stuff drives me absolutely nuts as well.

Michael's Orchids I should have repotted mine from last yr earlier. They were in nasty, moldy bark. One I got from Fantasy even...
Oh no! Yeah, even when I "know better" I feel compelled to repot.
Thanks Michael, informative as always, yeah, not nice finding bugs!! I'm sending positive vibes and foresee ample flower spikes in your future!
Yeah they are definitely not cheap. I get mine on eBay too. I am expecting my second catasetum-type to arrive any day now!
Al C great, happy growing. Is your coming in leaf like Michaels or is it in its dormant stage like mine?

You and me both!!

Thank you for sharing. I admired the house plant behind you with the large leaves. Do you have any idea what it is?
It's a philodendron!

Everything is a learning curve, just keep moving forward! I broadcast all my failures...
Did you get that from Evelyn? If so, I have many of her rescues. Hope it grows great for you!! Have a GREAT weekend, Michael!
I did, and thank you! You have a great weekend too my dear!
Too funny, I thought so as soon as I saw the business card.
