Very good piece of journalism into a sport that's taking the world by storm. Forgot to mention the man who revolutionized the game of squash "The maestro" Amr Shabana. He pretty much started the concept of thinking outside the box that gave birth to a unique style of Egyptian squash a style of using attack and angles of shots that deceives the opponent.
Those countries are famous for being excellent at those sports But we're just famous for football and we're not even that good at it like we are in squash We got Mo Salah tho
Egypt was always very good in squash.. and that' not only recently. I remember it since the early 80's! If squash ever becomes an Olympic game, Egypt will collect all the gold.
Unfortunately that is probably why we will never see Squash in the Olympics. At least not until Egypt isn't as dominant anymore. Squash in the Olympics? No way. Unless USA, China or Russia are good at it. Squash actual playing time compared to tennis is 60% to 40%. Squash players heartbeat goes up to 200. How many other olympic sports that can match this? I respect equestrian sports due to their history and heritage. But i hear that dolphins are complaining of negligence and discrimination because they don't have a place in human Olympics.

Cause in Alexandria alone we have more than 20 squash courts and it is a sport funded by the families of well educated parents and willing to support their children till success, a highly educated and respectful citizens
The secret behind why Egypt is dominating in Squash is not the government but is the coaches in Smouha Club. Barada is from Alexandria and so they are the same coaches that dominated the world. Number one in Men and Women is from Smouha Club.

I'm watching a lot of unwarranted comments that mention Pakistani players(legends) that this video doesn't mention them from my fellow Pakistanis. And, that this video or Egyptian players should credit them. I'm really not sure why? It's probably more a frustration to be irrelevant in a sport that we dominated than anything else. Egypt is a gold standard for producing players, and they should be appreciated. You guys are doing great at producing talent and nurturing it. Well done! Most of Egyptian players, I have seen, when asked about Pakistani players are very gracious in their admiration. So there's really no point in coming here and trying to become relevant. We, as a Pakistani, lost it through nobody else's fault. We didn't have a monopoly in Squash, and Egypt doesn't have now. If we are so good, or we used to be so good, why don't we try and prove it and in the process take the game forward? Once again, well done Egypt. Amr, Shabana, Dardir Al Bakari, Gamal Awad and About Taleb were some of the greatest Egyptian players in history going back many years. Now the Egyptian women have reached the top. It's in their culture and their top players are celebrities. They help train their junior players so the kids see the sport at top level from a very early age. This makes a lasting impression on how their brains process squash. Most of the top athletes in any sport start at a very early age. If you start playing a sport at 5 years old and keep at it you will probably be better than someone who starts at age 12 or 13.

I forgot to mention the wonderful Amr Shabana -- he and Ashour set new standards of play and, importantly, great sporting behaviour on the court (no disrespect to other Egyptian players, but I reserve special admiration for Ashour and Shabana) And I neglected to mention the great Egyptian women -- particularly El Welily and El Sherbini!
something tells me that the egyptian élite loves squash, and this is why they dominate squash. after all, mubarak was a squash enthusiast. i don't have statistics, but very likely squash is played mostly by those from wealthy families. however, they have done very well and i love to watch them play.
Great feature. I’m an addicted amateur player and a subscriber to Eurosport for PSA Squash TV. I used to watch quite a bit of tennis but, after a few years of spectating squash (where a gruelling set takes only 20 or 25 mins and the breaks in between sets are a mere 2 minutes) I can’t even watch tennis anymore. It annoys me how little actual playing time there is and how many breaks there are. Squash truly is one of the greatest sports, both as a player and a follower. It’s a travesty it isn’t an Olympic event yet horse riding is. But then again horse riding is a “sport” of the rich and powerful (including royalty) so no wonder it’s included...
They were on about trying to get darts and snooker in too. With all due respect to those activities, if a morbidly obese 50 odd year old can compete in something at the highest level, it's not a sport. One of the equestrian events at London 2012 had a 70 year old competing.....
I've competed in the following: football, rugby, cricket, sprinting, half-marathons, trail running, boxing, kickboxing, swimming, rowing, squash, tennis and badminton. The hardest sports, in terms of physical endurance and mental strength, are the martial arts and squash. Nothing else comes close. Tennis is a walk in the park by comparison. Football and rugby are also hard if you play in certain positions, but you always have time to rest in a team game - the same is not true on court or in the ring. Track and field, swimming and rowing are certainly gruelling, but all of them require little conscious thought and very little sporting intelligence. Why squash is not included in a competition supposed to showcase the world's best athletes will forever be a mystery to me.
Unfortunately in Australia, the biggest enemy squash had was the skyrocketing land values in the suburbs. I'm not sure about the other cities but in Brisbane there would only be about a tenth of the centres operating now compared to the 60's, 70's and 80's. Even with the centres that still exist, many have converted the courts to gyms. It's a pity because it was an extremely popular sport with a very healthy weekly competition. BTW, the great Egyptian player, Dadir spent some time over here, passing on his knowledge to some local players and coaches. I think he eventually went to New Zealand and coached their national team in the late 60's for the World Amateur Championships held in England.
Same is true of the UK unfortunately. I've seen two sets of courts converted to weight rooms in the four gyms I've enrolled at in the past decade. Squash is something of a dying sport here, and yet it gives you a cardio and strength workout that beats ALL of the new fancy gym classes - TRX, HIIT, Crossfit etc.
Hi Baldrick -- re loss of courts in Brisbane, I can tell you the (more or less) actual numbers. I have a copy of the local Squash yearbook from the early 1980s -- it has a list of *90* centres in the Brisbane region (average 6 courts per centre? Around 500-600 courts?). Last time I checked, there were around 16 centres left (with 4-6 courts each(?) = maybe 100 courts at most?) As you say, real estate values did a lot of damage -- and, as you will know, there are not many centres in the inner areas of Brisbane, so travel is now an issue
@@absoleet probably not. the reason that squash courts are easy pickings is that they are indoors and often part of a leisure centre (UK), where there is an increasing appetite for gyms and the plethora of classes associated with them (HIIT, Pilates, etc.) .. oh also (in my experience) golfing clinics and creches. Alas it is difficult to defend from squash pov as often they are not used during the day (juniors at school, seniors at work) whereas the increasing aged population are queuing up at the leisure centre doors for classes, so it makes economic sense to close the courts and redeploy the space. The real issue is not enough people playing, which is a shame, a travesty and a mystery because it is a magnificent sport ... maybe not being in the Olympics hasn't helped to spread the word. It seems that people would rather be seen skateboarding, speed climbing, surfing, playing golf, breakdancing (and almost pole dancing) as these are all part of our great Olympic heritage from 2024 ... I'll stop here before I smash my keyboard in frustration!

Actually guys this sport is managed very well here in Egypt, alot of young professional who train with Ahmed Parada the legend of the game , but all over the world its amateur game Its the same why Europe leads now in football, young professional players can do alot of differences
And Egypt was before Pakistan. Egypt in 1930 / 1938 won British open 6 time and Egypt in 1940 / 1948 won British open 3 time .that time Pakistan was part of big India . And then Pakistan dominant the game for 30 years and now since 1990 Egypt back but this time Egypt have more more players because ex president was like squash and make more clubs for squash. And now new president like football and make project for next 20 years he need in football 1000 players like mohamed salah
i know squash because it is on sea games although its not so popular...very rare people know this sport in my country..we love badminton and tennis..but best regard to egypt and other squash player all over the world..from Indonesia
really nice piece but doesn't explain why Egypt is dominating. the clubs in Cairo compete with one another and kids fight hard to make teams for the clubs plus there are no consolation draws in the huge 128 entrant sized junior events, think about that one. this is why plus they love it and for young pros a way to get out on tour and explore the world. we don't have this setup in the US its more scattered and geared towards making top college teams: the wrong reason to take up the greatest and toughest sport there is!
i liked this video alot but you can't talk about squash in egypt without give alot of credit to Amr Shabana and Ramy Ashour , first of all Amr Shabana i can say he is the one created the new style or as you name it the egyptian style of squash , and Ramy Ashour the one who took it for another level , the one who created the most gorgeous and powerful stroke i ever seen also he didn't affected on people by his talent but also by his personality which attracted alot in and out egypt to play squash

Actually that's not true. The reason that you only hear about these two players is that the are miles ahead of anyone who has ever played the game. Pakistani Hashim Khan won 7 British open titles. Azam khan won 4. We have produced at-least a dozen more world number ones other than Jahangir and Jansher. At the end of the day, Pakistan has 30 men's British open titles and Egypt has 16. Pakistan is way ahead.

The reason they are so good is because the government supported squash and built a lot of courts. by doing so they allowed it to be a public sport unlike USA that keeps it mainly for the elites
They talk about how Egyptians support other Egyptians but it is well-known that Mohammad El-Shorbagy is not beloved by his countrymen (don't know about Marwan); also he lives in the U.K.

Good video, thanks -- but doesn't mention Amr Bey, who really started the 'Egyptian Way', back in the 1930s: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._D._Amr_Bey -- and other past gifted Egyptian players such as Mahmoud Karim and Abou Taleb who followed him. But Ahmed Barada certainly re-ignited the flame in the 1990s

For many years, the stylish Egyptian game was swamped by the attritional game of players such as Hashim, Hunt, Barrington and the JKs -- but I am thrilled by the new, more flamboyant and exciting, Egyptian game -- and thanks to Barada for re-starting it -- and now thanks in particular to Ramy Ashour, who has elevated the game to a new level (despite his chronic injuries)
I forgot to mention the wonderful Amr Shabana -- he and Ashour set new standards of play and, importantly, great sporting behaviour on the court (no disrespect to other Egyptian players, but I reserve special admiration for Ashour and Shabana)
And I neglected to mention the great Egyptian women -- particularly El Welily and El Sherbini!

something tells me that the egyptian élite loves squash, and this is why they dominate squash. after all, mubarak was a squash enthusiast. i don't have statistics, but very likely squash is played mostly by those from wealthy families. however, they have done very well and i love to watch them play.

Great feature. I’m an addicted amateur player and a subscriber to Eurosport for PSA Squash TV. I used to watch quite a bit of tennis but, after a few years of spectating squash (where a gruelling set takes only 20 or 25 mins and the breaks in between sets are a mere 2 minutes) I can’t even watch tennis anymore. It annoys me how little actual playing time there is and how many breaks there are.
Squash truly is one of the greatest sports, both as a player and a follower. It’s a travesty it isn’t an Olympic event yet horse riding is. But then again horse riding is a “sport” of the rich and powerful (including royalty) so no wonder it’s included...

They were on about trying to get darts and snooker in too. With all due respect to those activities, if a morbidly obese 50 odd year old can compete in something at the highest level, it's not a sport. One of the equestrian events at London 2012 had a 70 year old competing.....
I've competed in the following: football, rugby, cricket, sprinting, half-marathons, trail running, boxing, kickboxing, swimming, rowing, squash, tennis and badminton. The hardest sports, in terms of physical endurance and mental strength, are the martial arts and squash. Nothing else comes close. Tennis is a walk in the park by comparison. Football and rugby are also hard if you play in certain positions, but you always have time to rest in a team game - the same is not true on court or in the ring. Track and field, swimming and rowing are certainly gruelling, but all of them require little conscious thought and very little sporting intelligence. Why squash is not included in a competition supposed to showcase the world's best athletes will forever be a mystery to me.
Unfortunately in Australia, the biggest enemy squash had was the skyrocketing land values in the suburbs. I'm not sure about the other cities but in Brisbane there would only be about a tenth of the centres operating now compared to the 60's, 70's and 80's. Even with the centres that still exist, many have converted the courts to gyms. It's a pity because it was an extremely popular sport with a very healthy weekly competition. BTW, the great Egyptian player, Dadir spent some time over here, passing on his knowledge to some local players and coaches. I think he eventually went to New Zealand and coached their national team in the late 60's for the World Amateur Championships held in England.
Same is true of the UK unfortunately. I've seen two sets of courts converted to weight rooms in the four gyms I've enrolled at in the past decade. Squash is something of a dying sport here, and yet it gives you a cardio and strength workout that beats ALL of the new fancy gym classes - TRX, HIIT, Crossfit etc.

Hi Baldrick -- re loss of courts in Brisbane, I can tell you the (more or less) actual numbers. I have a copy of the local Squash yearbook from the early 1980s -- it has a list of *90* centres in the Brisbane region (average 6 courts per centre? Around 500-600 courts?). Last time I checked, there were around 16 centres left (with 4-6 courts each(?) = maybe 100 courts at most?)
As you say, real estate values did a lot of damage -- and, as you will know, there are not many centres in the inner areas of Brisbane, so travel is now an issue

@@absoleet probably not. the reason that squash courts are easy pickings is that they are indoors and often part of a leisure centre (UK), where there is an increasing appetite for gyms and the plethora of classes associated with them (HIIT, Pilates, etc.) .. oh also (in my experience) golfing clinics and creches. Alas it is difficult to defend from squash pov as often they are not used during the day (juniors at school, seniors at work) whereas the increasing aged population are queuing up at the leisure centre doors for classes, so it makes economic sense to close the courts and redeploy the space. The real issue is not enough people playing, which is a shame, a travesty and a mystery because it is a magnificent sport ... maybe not being in the Olympics hasn't helped to spread the word. It seems that people would rather be seen skateboarding, speed climbing, surfing, playing golf, breakdancing (and almost pole dancing) as these are all part of our great Olympic heritage from 2024 ... I'll stop here before I smash my keyboard in frustration!

And Egypt was before Pakistan. Egypt in 1930 / 1938 won British open 6 time and Egypt in 1940 / 1948 won British open 3 time .that time Pakistan was part of big India . And then Pakistan dominant the game for 30 years and now since 1990 Egypt back but this time Egypt have more more players because ex president was like squash and make more clubs for squash. And now new president like football and make project for next 20 years he need in football 1000 players like mohamed salah

really nice piece but doesn't explain why Egypt is dominating. the clubs in Cairo compete with one another and kids fight hard to make teams for the clubs plus there are no consolation draws in the huge 128 entrant sized junior events, think about that one. this is why plus they love it and for young pros a way to get out on tour and explore the world. we don't have this setup in the US its more scattered and geared towards making top college teams: the wrong reason to take up the greatest and toughest sport there is!

Actually that's not true. The reason that you only hear about these two players is that the are miles ahead of anyone who has ever played the game. Pakistani Hashim Khan won 7 British open titles. Azam khan won 4. We have produced at-least a dozen more world number ones other than Jahangir and Jansher. At the end of the day, Pakistan has 30 men's British open titles and Egypt has 16. Pakistan is way ahead.

The reason they are so good is because the government supported squash and built a lot of courts. by doing so they allowed it to be a public sport unlike USA that keeps it mainly for the elites
