I rode this by snowboard around 20 years ago. Looking back the risks I took compared to my skill levels must've been insane. That ridge walk in snowboard boots was the nerviest part by far. Don't recall there being any steps back out then. Poor glacier...
I did it in 2005. We skied right to the base of the stairs, no scrambling over rocks. Then climbed the stairs to the cog railway station. No gondola required. Sad to see how much the Mer de Glace has retreated. Had about 6 inches of dry powder to ski at the top, too. I skied it on teles, if anyone cares..😁
Great video! I skied the Vallee Blanche in 1986…a long time ago! It’s astonishing how much ice has been lost, we skied right into town. Glad I did it when I did!
Very impressive footage, and good that you zoom in on the Mer de glace impacted by climate. And very attentive that you respect the French culture by switching from beer to wine ;-). Like your channel, and indeed deserves more subs!
This brought back fond memories. My wife and I did this 60 years ago. It was April, but we were able to ski to the bottom where we had some wine in En Bois. The final bit was steep, trees and sharp turns. it turned out that New England skiier were better at this part than the French !
Beautiful scenery! Great footage. I've skied in the Alps a couple of times (Dachstein and La Rosière). The mountains seem so "in your face". Quite different than what I'm used to, living in the Vancouver area and skiing Whistler. Awesome video! Chamonix is on my list.
Chamonix is my favourite freeride skiing spot, and you have done a great top professional video with impressing drone views, and a huge work putting together so much footage and cutting it in such a narrative way. Respect!
Great video. I skied the VB some 20 years ago and was surprised at your climb out and transport down. First video I have seen from you so I subscribed and will watch a few more. Good camera work, great story line and interesting topic for an old skier like me.
We ski in the Chamonix Valley every year, the Vallee Blanche is my dream to ski... few more years. 15 years old now skiing there since I was 3, not long now..
I skied that back in 1990. We were also there in April but were able to ski all they way to the bottom. It was awesome. Only downside was that I was there with military so they made us do cravas rescue training. That was grim.
Great job man. Just today, 9/19/24, I finally booked my first trip to Chamonix. I am beyond excited, and doing all the research I can. The Vallee Blanche is on the list of must do. I might get in touch with Tom. Thanks for some actual "ski-bum" personality, many videos are not skiers, just tourists. But oh well, I live in the mega tourist town of Breckenridge, CO, and see many people at least enjoying themselves. Again, great job, I enjoyed this video.
I stumbled across this video while browsing, and a few minutes in, I was wondering why the presenter seemed so familiar. Then it hit me. I used to religiously watch Andreas's whistler ski bum vid! It's a piece of comedy gold that i think i would watch on vimeo back in the day. It's good to see that he's still living right, and I'll be sure to watch more of his vids!
Skied this in 2005, on teles! Knife edge ridge was very narrow, after the ice cave, we were roped up with the guide, only a single rope handrail. We had 7 inches dry powder at start of the ski down, lunch at the Refuge du Requin. From there we could ski the Mer de Glace, all the way to the steps that we climbed back up to the Cog Railway. No gondola at that time, and we skied all the way.
Brilliant video. I last skied the VB in around 2004 or 2005 and the wasting of the Mer de Glacé is terrifying. It’s seems to have wasted down at least 100m since the 2010 marker if not more. It looks like it’ll be back to the Glacier du Tacul and the lower icefall pretty soon which is very sad. Only something crazy like a Gulf Stream breakdown is going to save the Alpine glaciers.
Nice, you've got some really nice shots and brough some great memories alive since around 2009... Had a dream to come back in March 2023, but did not work out. Definetly would be back there one day! Big dream is one day ski down, next day have a flight with ulta light plane that shuts the engine, so you glide in that silence and breath stopping views, from even higher altitude!
That was epic. My dad promised me that I could do that when I turned 13 couple of years after my 13th birthday were going in from the Italian side. I’m so excited haha. Do u reckon u could do a video on the Italian approach?
I did it in April 2003, getting on the mountain from the Italian side (the old cablecar was still running at that time). I can confirm that the final part looked quite different. Great experience anyway.
Brings back memories from 1994 Skied north face mnt blanc. La cortes coulior , cosmiques coulior , northface aiguille du argentier , hellbronner down into italy. Its a place where you push yourself. And quite possibly die😊
I skied the Valleé Blanche in 1994 on a Snow & Rock dealer trip. The arrete was a single track and at the bottom we walked up steps to the train. No gondola. Hundreds of feet of ice gone in 30 years. 😢
I’ve skied the Vallee Blanche three times, twice in the 80s and once in the 90s. I went to Chamonix to celebrate my 60th birthday with my two children five years ago. I really wanted to take them there to re-experience it together as a family, but sadly it wasn’t open in January. This place is so very special and an incredible experience. I am truly shocked to see how much of the glacier has disappeared from the days when I did it. I remember there was just a few steps before getting on the train, but nothing like what is shown in this video. I wonder how the planet is going to be for my children and grandchildren. Very sad.
Despite the sceptics ignoring the science and facts, global warming is having a devastating impact on galciers and ski resorts in gereral. I've been skiing in Italy since the eighties and it saddens me to see how the Presena Glacier in Passo Tonale has shrank over the years. I fear skiing will die out and be a thing of the past in as little as a couple of decades.
Nice video and also very good youtube channel , but... it will be nice to be more correct with the "superlatives". Aiguille du midi (3842m) ski lift it's "just " the 7th highest in world and second in U.E ( Zermatt CH. is the highest in U.E 3899 m).Jade Dragon Snow Mountain China 4,700 m is highest in the world .
Yeah, that’s right. I was referring to the elevation gain, not the elevation of the top station but I should have phrased it more accurately. Would’ve been less catchy though 😉
