    thank you Joshua, I am a disabled veteran just getting into the FPV community and working on my first build. I have tremors in my hands which makes it difficult to solder but thanks to your techniques on the build videos, I’ve been able to build my first quad. I am working to get other veterans into the hobby and hopefully build a small community here in South Florida. Thanks again for all that you do!! I am saving my shekels to purchase your kit!!

    I’ve rebuilt this quad 3 times. Apart from other builds I’ve done as this was my first. The first FC stopped powering on. The second FC, OSD chip died and then the ESC just fried one day while practicing rolls. On my final rebuild I realized how great this kit is. Every part picked out for it was very thoughtful and easy to build. Even down to what rubber mounts come with the FC and ESC. I’ll chalk up the first 2 builds to lack of experience or just bad luck / components. It’s 2022. If you want to build I’d still recommend this even tho RDQ has Nazgul5 on sale for $200 and it’s an awesome quad which is buy if I didn’t have this. Here’s a tip for you. Build this. And keep building and replacing parts as you crash. You’ll be a pro from using and reusing the same quad.

    Watching someone wire up stuff gets me all nostalgic when I use to do that as an EE.
    For those that are curious (at 51:52) Capacitors act as a short until they are charged then they act as an open. Opposite is true for inductors. (opposite sides of the impedance graph and all).
    Then the cap beeps in one direction and not the other as it's a polarized cap. You can get a better depiction of what is going on if you measure actual resistance and not just measure for a short. You can see the resistance actually rising from nothing to something.

    For those who use a thread locker compound, this can give the impression that a screw is tight when it may not be tightly fastening the part. Everything stretches or compresses a tiny bit after use and a "loose" screw that actually seems tight (because it is locked in) can allow a slight vibration to exist in the motor mount.

  • @Larryn7luf

    Joshua it may have been said, but when you get the power wire soldered, then when you put the zip tie on the capacitor, then solder the capacitor leads to the pad. The zip tie hold everything in place while you solder the capacitor to each side.
    I tack the power leads then zip tie the capacitor and then finish up each side really nice.

    Hi Joshua...If I could add a small hint for new builders......many times its easier to dab some flux paste onto a pad or dip wire ends into it, then melt some solder onto your tip and let the melted solder flow onto the pad or wire. I often lament the lack of three hands. Makes a very nice blob and tins wires like a champ. Banggood, Ali Express etc....'Mechanics' brand works nicely and is cheap.

    13:00 My soldering tip for big pads like that: make sure you keep tip clean with brass wool. Tin the tip of the iron by melting some solder, then brass wool it again... Then melt a tiny bit of solder on the tip again: that tiny bit will help with heat conduction for heating that massive pad in the video: if you use a dirty dry tip it can take forever to heat your work, and is essential that the parts themselves are hot enough to melt the solder. PS they should do their boards with through-holes for the capacitor :P otherwise I reckon before you even attach the battery wire to the ESC, cut the pre-tin off the wire and expose some fresh wire, poke the legs through the wire strands close to the rubber before you re-tin the wire, then solder to pad. Looks a bit risky for a cold join to do in two steps

    I bought, built and am flying this quad. First 5" but I practiced a bit on an Inductrix and various sims. Having a blast getting into this new hobby. I went with the 4S battery option and didn't initially install the capacitor. I noticed that WHEN I crashed, I often lost video and sometimes the ESC would die. I would need to unplug and replug the battery on the quad and all was good. This weekend I added the capacitor and that has resolved those issues. Still crashing though ;-)

    Perhaps I should make a series of how - to - solder videos.
    I started soldering CB Radio equipment in the mid 90' s when I was still in high school.
    One helpful tip.
    DO NOT scrape the solder off of the tip with metal or sandpaper. It will damage the tip and expose the copper under the finish.
    Use a wet sponge instead.
    Simply wet it and ring it out.
    You can drag the hot tip accros the soft side (Not the green pan scrubber) and after a few seconds it will get hot again.

    I love watching and you are highly entertaining and I learn something every time. A quick hint that might help some with the capacitor install. If you install the capacitor first then the battery leads you can reflow the entire pad and the capacitor will stay put because the other lead will hold it in place. So for those who are not as good at soldering installing the capacitor first will make you not have to be as good as Joshua.

    -Not to be that guy, but while leaded solder flows much better it is always a good idea to at least keep a window open when soldering. A budget fume extractor (static pressure pc fan with a charcoal filter should suffice) is even better. When using leaded solder some lead will end up in the smoke, which you should try to avoid inhaling.-
    Some flux has rosin in it, which you shouldn't inhale. Prolonged exposure to that stuff can lead to health problems. Stay safe!

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vaporization temperature of lead is far higher than the temperatures used for soldering. It's not a good idea to breathe solder fumes because they do contain harmful chemicals from the flux. But that is true whether you're using leaded solder or not.

    9:33 Quick Tip: If ever you use RED accidently and need to free it, use an "old" soldering iron tip to heat up the screw releasing the red locktite.. Place the HOT soldering iron tip into the hex at the top of the screw, give it a min and itll release .

    You can also make it pretty and add just a dot of nail polish on the outside of a screw. Or use clear polish.

    When I taught soldering in the USAF (1984 to 1986) we thought students to cover the component so we didn’t drip solder into it. Just a thought!

    I really wish quadcopters kits were more available, I love building quads but hate picking out the parts lol

      Yah I can relate too. It’s annoying to find parts and see which part is suitable for for another

    Only other thing that I find necessary is some sort of motor wire protection on the arms. I usually use normal heat shrink to protect from prop strikes but there are many other options out there now..

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put the wires on the inside of the arms for this reason.

    Great kit. Love your videos. Went to school of hard knocks on my Frankenstein build before this. Capacitor gets in the way of the VTX. Might be better to solder to the XT60 connector. Or...solder after VTX is soldered.
