The TRUTH About Makeup & Mature Skin!!

  • In today's video I'm sharing a few possibly harsh truth's about makeup and mature skin.
I started working in the beauty industry in 1996, and in 2016 I began posting videos on TH-cam to share my knowledge with other women who may be struggling with changes that come with getting older. In 2016 I was 43, today I am 51, and I find myself struggling right along with many of you.
This is somewhat of a vulnerable video for me, but it's honest. I am certain they're a lot of us that don't want to face the fact that there might be some limitations to what we can and can't do or achieve with just makeup
I hope everyone takes this video in the spiriti in which it was intended. As always, I truly appreciare. like, comment and /or share if you enjoyed it! Please subscribe to my channel if you aren't already!

Boy, I am 72 and I needed to hear this!!! I love makeup and I have always worn a lot of it. Especially, eye makeup. I look ridiculous after a few hours when everything runs & settles into my lines!!! Still, I continue to do the same thing. I’ve always been good at application and I need to face facts - my canvas is just not the same!! 😂😂😂 Thank you for this intervention!! 😊

I loved this! At 75 I have already discovered that I look so much better with a light, more natural makeup application. I have thoroughly enjoyed my gray hair, and have discovered I now need softer and pinker tones. And I also know that health and happiness gives a woman a glow that can’t come from cosmetics. ❤️ Love ya, Risa!

Sophia Loren said in an interview a long time ago that as we age we have to do a lot more to look like we’ve done less. I’ve recently come to realize there is no foundation for 60+ skin-skin tint, concealer on dark spots works best. If you let go of TH-camr eye makeup (trying to create a crease, winged liner, etc.) and apply shadow, even shimmers, more simply it can look good.

Several years ago I quit lining my lower lids or waterline (except for an off white color on the waterline) and applying mascara to the lower lashes. This helps my 58 year old eyes look more lifted.

    Accelerated aging happens after menopause
Aging is not as noticeable until your hormones change
I looked young up until 54 because that’s when menopause started
It’s not just a number it’s when the hormones shut off

That is true, but bone structure and genetics also play a big part. I look like my mother and her family have long faces and get saggy more so than wrinkly. I had jewels starting in my early forties. I finally had a facelift at 58. I was happy with the results but although a lot of my jowels were reduced, they were not completely gone.

I lived almost an entire decade wearing no makeup, 40-50. I'm currently 57 and literally had to re-learn a lot! I definitely invest in skin care. My make up routine is simple for everyday, I'm just looking for enhancement. Wet-N-Wild tinted Hydrator to neutralize, a taupey eyeshadow to recede the prominent eye bone, brow pencil for shape and definition, blush, Clinique Pink or Black honey on the lips and a tubing mascara. It's a 5 minute routine that boosts my confidence level but never looks like I'm trying too hard or just gave up.

Oh, girlfriend! This video speaks to me! I'm 54 now and I've literally been having this conversation with myself for the past few months. Thankfully, I love mixing foundations together to get just the right formula. Both the Haus Labs and Maybelline Skin Tint foundations mix beautifully with my more full coverage matte foundations to create just the right finish... natural matte and long-wearing + just a hint of healthy glow without being too radiant. I have a few light coverage skin tints, and also some light to medium foundations, but some days I just need a bit more coverage and still want my full coverage foundation (I love both Estee Lauder Double-wear and Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless), and mixing in those more luminous products really helps to make the full coverage products more wearable. And please do try the new One-Size foundation! I'm dying to hear your review of it!

Hi Risa, I love your channel and have watched for many years. I'm 60 and also agree that as I get older it's 1) much harder to do eye makeup as my lids get more & more hooded and 2) when I have tried to do very much to my eyes it always makes me look like a performer who deliberately makes themselves up for the stage (which looks crazy for day to day). Thanks for helping me feel that I'm not crazy for thinking the more makeup I attempt to wear now, the WORSE I look. Could you also do a makeup tutorial for those of us who wear glasses and all the problems that arise from the glasses.

Thank you for the video. I'm 70 now, and trying to find makeup products that don't make me look even older is frustrating. And, like you, I've had to change how I use those products because my eyes have gotten even more hooded (and I have always had small eyes anyway), and the dark, puffy undereyes have gotten more pronounced. My biggest challenge now is to find the right eye products that don't emphasize the "crinkles" below my eyebrows. I certainly can't use shimmers or metallics as they only accentuate them. And, perhaps the biggest challenge is that my eyes are even more sensitive now, so I have to be really careful what I use and how I use them - sometimes I just can't wear eye makeup at all. One final thing, I have recently had to start taking medication - which I will be on for the rest of my life - which can change my skin texture and hair volume and texture. Damn! It's hell getting old! All of this just makes me realize that I need to continually be thankful for the good health I do have and not worry about the details. 🥰

I am four years ahead of you in age and a bit farther in menopause. Oh yes, I buy smaller palettes and have been looking at singles instead. I’ve been slowly adopting k-beauty for the budget and skin results after multiple months. My under eye is dramatically changing; using so much less concealer in a runny formula works better than the popular Maybelline age rewind type. Blend as usual patting in, but follow with a wrung out beauty triangle spritzed with setting spray. Result is lasting and flawless for the first time in decades. Yes, there is corrector under there. As your hair grays, switch to a proper ashy brow color for your personal shade. You will look better to those who notice, but not realize why. I play with blushes and lined lips, but my eyes are a problem with allergies and dry eyes under glasses. I am learning shiny lips are better than creamy lips- I never could get matte lips to work for me when I was younger. I have an Essence clear lip gloss and I wipe the lipstick off the wand before placing it back into the tube. I am intrigued with lip stains lined and topped with a gloss. I am noticing mature youtubers dabbling in the Asian beauty lip and eye makeups. From the lovely 70+ TH-camrs, “wait, I know I had a cupids bow! Where did it go?!” The age spots on the sides of your face in a past video are from the sun hitting the side of your face as a driver or passenger; face brightener under sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat stops and reverses that slowly. I tried the PanOxyl face wash for the “menopause stink” with excellent results. Sniff, smile. I swear I had oily hooded eyes as a teen before we had the term. “Adapt” is the word you are looking for. We’ve always adapted our makeup, we just didn’t realize it until hormones quickly forced us into it again and considering repurchases or shifts with every empty item now. It’s not what you give up, it’s all the new possibilities! Now, for my exercise.

@@cynthiawhite8323 Yes, Mine are slowly fading, so I use a slightly darker than my lips shade for my "nude" lips color and still dabble in the deeper red-oranges for my "red" color for my lips. A few shades of darker pinks also work. The liner holds in your lipstick from wandering off your lips. I do a nude pink color in retractable or wooden pencil, depending on lipstick.

Risa, I appreciate the thought and honesty that went into this video. While aging is most certainly a privilege, it can also be a hard pill to swallow. I will admit to struggling with my aging skin, graying hair, and how to manage my makeup in a way that that is flattering to mature skin while also giving me enough color to make me both look and feel alive. I love the idea and act of embracing a minimalist approach to makeup (I tried Merit, couldn’t do it), but I just don’t feel like me or dare I say “pretty” like this. I genuinely feel as though I look better with a tastefully done, colorful lip, a healthy dose of blush and mild/moderate eye makeup. As a 50 something, being comfortable in our own skin takes time, patience and practice. With all that said, I'm wishing everyone on a similar journey much peace and self-love. We're all in this together. xx

Hi Risa, I watched this video once again, and omy gosh you hit on so many important topics! Like, the mixing. I am afraid to mix, yet I KNOW, that I cannot keep on using Estee Lauder Double Wear unless I use a wet sponge to make it look lighter on the face. I can tell you what totally surprised me, was the Maybelline Super-Stay 24-hour Skin Tint, it's Light to Medium Coverage and OMY Gosh it's amazing! It makes me look so much younger - so much better than if I had the Estee Lauder on thick, it's the biggest difference & it seriously has changed my life! Also, I have soooooo many eyeshadow palettes, I was addicted to them....and I refuse to throw anything away....so I'm just gonna try to not go as heavy as I did when I was 40.....when I say heavy, I don't mean 'trashy', just I know that I need to lighten up on the eye makeup 4 sure! 😘😘😘

Wow! You nailed it with this one! I’m in my late 50s and like you, I’m wanting to buy the ND warm palette. Those are my colors ! However, one eye is more hooded than the other now. One is more crinkly, and one brow is more sparse. I really struggle with makeup that used to be so easy. It’s a bummer and I too am looking at shadow sticks and one shadow looks. Thanks for addressing this and for giving us all other ways to still wear make up and look pretty! ❤

I have that problem with my eyes too - one is hooded and the other isn’t. I followed Risa’s hooded eyes tutorial on one eye with my eyeshadow which makes my eyes appear both the same. It did take some practice though.

Absolutely True. I'm 56. My tip: I dilute my makeup base with sunscreen...after applying sunscreen. Feels lighter, spreads easily, and looks even. Thank you beautiful for all your tips. Love from Texas/lorena

You shouldn’t mix your foundation with sunscreen because as you said it will dilute it and at the same time it will reduce the effectiveness of the sunscreen, if you want to protect your skin from the sun I would suggest to wear the sunscreen separately from foundation . You should watch Robert Welsh’s videos about it.

I’m 47 and the most eye makeup I do now is bronzer in the crease, tight line, maybe a nude eyeliner in the waterline, & mascara. Or I’ll use one shadow stick either matte or a shimmer. Plus I have hooded eyes also. My eyes start to water really bad now too. Jaclyn Hill recommended that lash serum that you’re using from Amazon but she said it gave her dark circles so be careful. I’ve been using the one from The Ordinary and I love it. Loved this video ❤

You nailed it across the board! Turned 65, moved to LV from Chicago are and everything I knew or thought I knew about makeup no longer worked! I’ve been trying to find what does and feel like I’m trying something new every week. I do have to say, though, I’ve had great luck with Laura Geller products, especially her new serum which is great and has an SPF included. Yes, my makeup spend is less and my skin care is more, but I still love makeup and love watching your videos!

I understand exactly what you are saying about our skin changing as we get older. I just turned 48 and went through a period of everything breaking up on me, i have had to change the type of foundation due to my changing skin. I have discovered under painting this year and find that it works well for my skin. I have had to cut back on my powder and being an oily girl that was difficult. I have had to stop using alot of powdered blushes and moved to cream and liquid blushes. They seem to not emphasize my texture as bad as the powder. You always look beautiful either glamed or not.

Hi hun throughly enjoyed watching this video, I love a straight talking person because you always know where you stand with them.
That said, I agree less is more on the foundation, I have never liked a full coverage skin look basically because I look after my skin diligently daily, even on holidays, staying in Spa's, visiting beauty therapist's etc.
But I always love to play my eyes up, and that's where I like my full-on glam, I don't use fake eyelashes because I personally don't like them, but I always use a lash serum. Lastly, if people want full glam at whatever age good on them and if they don't, great who cares it's their choice but who looks more glamorous then say for example Joan Collins she's 91 yrs of age and in my opinion looks fabulous in all her full glam.
So do whatever you want at whatever age because it's just another number. Thank you, darl ❤

I so appreciate the reminder to mix stuff. I have a group of questionable products I'm going to give a final test to toss because I haven't been using them. And I need to remember that before I toss an item to ask myself whether it can be mixed with anything or used another way.

I am older than you but fairly new to makeup. I learned how to do my makeup almost solely from watching tutorials on TH-cam. I can attest that you are correct on all counts! It took me a while…but the only accounts who really helped me find my look were those hosted by people who specialize in simple, elegant looks. As for eyeshadow palettes, after buying many (always thinking the next one would be magical!), I realized that they all look pretty much the same as I prefer simple eye looks (with a bit of sparkle on occasion). Thanks for the dose of truth - I really enjoy your videos!

Awesome video. I’m 59 years old and realized about 5-7 years ago that I had to cut back on the eye makeup, it just didn’t look good anymore. I will still do a simple Smokey Eye if I’m going out but for every day I wear falsies or lots of primer +mascara on curled lashes because I find that’s what works best for me.
I have a good skincare routine so I’m able to wear a very light foundation because my skin underneath is in great shape (if slightly uneven in tone). So everything you said has been 100% true for me in my experience, and I feel so validated after watching this video❤ I love your content, Risa fan for life!

Another thing that helps is if you wear the right colors for your undertone. Then you already have a big head start on giving your face some color even before you start applying any makeup 💄🤩.

This makes me sad- thank you for your honesty and sharing with us what you are experiencing and it all makes sense and is reasonable- as someone who is about to turn 43 I have been struggling to find beauty in my face- as someone who typically wore little to no makeup I’ve started trying foundations and buying eye palettes to try to not be so down about what the mirror shows, but your right at the end of the day the most important thing is to take care of your skin and accept where we really are in life

Hope this helps with the lashes tip Risa gave: My favorite mascara is High Impact Mascara by Clinique. It's expensive, but I always use their perfumes, so I wait for Bonus Time and get my perfume, then get them for free in the kits with all the little skin care goodies so I never run out. It's the only one that doesn't irritate my eyes or clump up. It's the non-waterproof version in black. I can build it out really nicely and a tube last a while. ✨❤✨

Thank you Risa. I am 65 and everything you said is so true! It is important to be honest with yourself and make adjustments as they are needed. I have eliminated full coverage foundations, eye liner on lower lids, almost all powder products and limit eye shadows to no more than 2 colors. Not only is my routine easier, but I look and feel better without all the heavy make-up!

I’m 66 and not only do I love makeup, but I enjoy the whole process from cleansing, priming, moisturizing, even applying a priming sunscreen and the actual makeup application processes. However, I have rarely “overdone it”. I keep it real looking, I think. I love to enhance my eye shape, which. I think has always been my best feature. I also use a tad of shimmer in my lids. My entire routine in the morning may take 20-30 minutes. I have gotten several RMS products and Rare Beauty ones I have been loving. But my favorite product is my Haus Labs Triclone foundation in the shade “240 light medium warm”. I have tried their foundation before and found it to make me look yellow. I realized after getting the 3 trial jars, that their “warm” is actually what every other company calls “cool”! I have reddish neutral undertones and some redness around my nose, chin and cheeks. I do need to get a green neutralizer again. That being said, the Hays foundation as well as the IT CC foundation in neutral medium covers everything pretty well in just 1- 1/2 pumps of total product. Thanks if anyone read this far! Give it a thumbs up if you did. I want to make a video so bad but I put up a few a few years back, but no one watched them. I really didn’t edit, so I should spend time on that if I dare do it again.

I’m 54 and I gave up wearing eyeshadow two years ago and I now have a large collection of glasses to “dress” my eyes 🥸 and I also only wear red and orange lipsticks! Red isn’t just for special occasions, it’s an everyday colour because at my age, every day I am blessed to wake up, IS a special occasion 😂 So, funky glasses and a striking bold lip is the way to go. Forget crazy cat lady, be a crazy glasses lady 🤓 ❤

Such a great video! I am finding I look so much better without much on my face except sunscreen, a little liquid blush, concealer, some powder under the eyes and on my T-zone, mascara, brows, lip gloss, and a swipe of a brown/taupe eyeshadow stick above my crease. It holds up better all day in the desert heat, too.

Risa this is one of my favorite videos you have done. In my 50’s I had to make big changes to my complexion products. Then in my early 60’s once again had to through the trial an error of finding better foundations for my skin. Now at 67 next month, I have finally moved to skin tints, light to medium coverage and more cream products. I gave up eyeshadow a year or so ago and use my contour or bronzer for a one and done look. I still longingly look at my very full drawer of eyeshadow, but the reality is my eyes are so hooded you can’t see the shadow and then it creases and I’m better off doing less. Skin care is so important and I wish I would have started better skin care/sunscreen many years before I did.

Ive a few age spots on each cheek that i dislike but on the whole my skin looks younger due to living in a damp sunless climate (ireland). Ive found im wearing makeup less and less. Partly as post covid i think we all got out of the habit of wearing makeup.

I want to thank you for posting this, and all your "mature skin" videos, while I am only 36, and started watching in my early 30s when I got a few illnesses which happened to wreck havoc on things like my skin (no matter how much i tried to prevent it), i no longer produce very much collagen or elastin, much like someone 2x my age, as well as now being severely malnourished and anemic due to malabsorption... SOOO, in a short time I went from someone who could easily do a soft glam look in 30mins, to feeling like i had NO idea what i was doing, having to learn and accept that YES, I now have to focus 80% of my time (but now i take alot more time to get ready, because i do everything I can to create the illusion that my skin is not what it is), I also found that I too cant wear the eyeshadow like I did, now I will just apply a 1 and done shadow, whether its a shimmer or even a glitter shadow in a neutral shade so i at least feel like im still having SOME fun with that pop of shimmer on the eye (think the colors for inner or mid lid in the ND glam palette)
I just got the new MAC foundation and actually really enjoy it mixed with a touch of face oil (it has a radiant glow already, most wont need the oil im guessing, but most foundations just look better now if they have a drop of oil added, as for mixing foundations, im all about that game, whether adding 1 for the finish and 1 for its coverage or mixing due to my olive but light undertone... and you gotta mix those color correctors ladies! get yourself a perfect neutralizing shade =)
