A video covering the latest release of Feren OS. An Ubuntu based OS that in my opinion is better than Linux Mint in form and function. Take a look and let me know what you think in the comments below.

    1) Feren has Night Color filter and finer display scaling
    2) wifi drivers work without need for update
    3) more options for internet browsers
    4) modern look, stable, all basics done right, install and forget

@@christopherdavies2285 with the exception of Mint... if you're tried more recently... might just be an older kernel issue... though Mint kinda puts a spanner in that theory given it uses a kernel older than even what Feren OS uses.
If that theory is correct, though, I'm hoping that may suddenly get fixed once Feren OS's upcoming big update happens... if not once Ubuntu 22.04 gets hardware enablement after that date... or so I'd hope.

Installing KDE on Mint only takes one command line, and one click to choose the display manager. And that's it. No need to install a different distro, you can have all what KDE has to offer in less than the time that it would take you to download the FerenOS iso. Now, if you want other features that FerenOS has but Mint doesnt, it's a reason to intall it. But not just to change the desktop environment.

I fell in love with the gnome2 desktop on old Ubuntu, and then they forced us into their take on gnome3 ~ called Unity.
So I went looking for a distro that still had gnome2. I found one right at the top of the list at distro-watch which had a continuation on gnome2, called Mate, and I decided to try it. I've been a Mint + Mate user ever since.

Feren is the fancy Linux. It is the Rolls Royce of Ubuntu distros. It does things well a year in, minus startup times. I used to run Xubuntu on my older PC, but seeing 32 bit is no longer supported, I decided to give Feran a chance with a higher spec machine, and am pleased.

My friend! Great Video! That, however is not Dolphin, but Nemo. Dolphin is in their though. I wish the default was also Dolphin. This is probably the best distribution around. Kubuntu LTS would be also tied for first place primarily because of its stability and support of the DE. 2nd place would be Spiral Linux KDE. The effort Dominic and team have put into this distribution is unparalleled. I know hope they create a good monetization strategy to keep this Distribution going for a very loooooong time! I hope it lives for 30 years!

I used 100's of distros after leaving windows and the distro hoping was painful in some cases. Ultimately I chose Fedora Linux, for up to date kernels and near bleeding edge packages that are stable. Fedora 38 KDE is just flawless and looks amazing out the box with a clean KDE desktop. Current Fedora KDE plasma is 5.27.5, KDE Framework 5.106.0, QT 5.15.9, Kerner 6.3.6-200, Graphics Platform is Wayland. Fedora system updated recently to these versions, prior kernel version was 6.2.3 and one day I got system upgrade it upgraded flawlessly to the newest versions and remains stable as always with a few new features. I love Fedora but the dnf package manager was a little bit of a learning curve moving from ubuntu's apt

After a long journey of testing distributions I'm using FerenOS for about 1,5 years now. I like the out of the box experience. I don't have to configure the system after installation (at least in my case ;-) ) and the customized KDE looks beautiful. And, even more important, the stability. I never had any issues with installations (Store, Synaptic or newer DEB/Flatpak packages from the manufacturer). All updates (afaik it's a kind of semi-rolling). went as smooth as they should. The only thing that surprises me is lightdm instead of sddm, but that doesn't bother me.

The transfer tool seems a real cool feature. And the compatibility too. As long as it doesn't use Snaps like the Ubuntu family it is ok. Using Vivaldi as standard I don´t think it uses Snaps. Further research --->They stated on their page: No pre-installed Snap planned
Since this is the first question likely on users’ minds, I would like to confirm that there are no plans for current-day Feren OS to ever pre-install Snap application support.
However, the option to install Snap application support manually is not planned to ever be removed, either. I have Mint Una as a second OS ( first is Garuda, after the support of Kubuntu 20.04 LTS stopped, and third is Widows 10 ). But I will give Feren a try. Like you, Troy, I'm a KDE fanboy.

I am quite happy with feren OS as 95% daily driver, for 2.5-3 years.
But there are also some gotchas, like usally. ☺️
Just too bad, the Win 7 inspired themes -≥ especially the launcher - have been removed as a default option.
Also, the store is a bit clunky at times and lacks the ability to choose a package source. Leads me to using Gnome software for now.
I look forward to his store update, which he has been announcing and postponing since 3 updates. 😁

I remember once, I think it was in 2019, I contacted the developer of Feren OS and told him that I wanted to design a banner for his official Twitter. He replied, "Yeah, that's fine," and I quickly designed a banner in Photoshop and sent it to him; It was a pretty simple design: the Feren OS logo in the middle, accompanied by a blur effect image and decorations in the corners (Abstract Textures that I downloaded from the internet in PNG format). The second banner had vectorized a laptop in inkscape with the Feren OS desktop as the background of the laptop that I designed myself. To all this I send him the designs on Twitter and he answers the following: "The designs are good, but there are more things to put and a lot of work ahead." Seeing that the developer showed no interest, I canceled everything and removed all layouts. I still have the laptop layout saved, plus I have 2 laptop layouts, one in Illustrator and one in Inkscape.

OK... Old Network/System Admin here.... I just watched the 1st 30 seconds of this video.... KDE is not for everyone! I think one of the reasons Team Mint dropped KDE was that not that many were actually downloading/using it. For most people/users I know... KDE is Extreme-Over-Kill as a Desktop GUI option. When you have to use too many configuration screens to tweak your desktop.... It's a huge turn-off! I used to be a KDE fan in the 3.x version days. When 4.x came to be... I stopped using it. Users look for simple!!!

    • @eBuzzCentral
      @eBuzzCentral  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Really the main reason they dropped KDE According to Clement is KDE apps the ecosystem and QT toolkit have “very little in common” with their present project. And another reason for dropping KDE is that Mint team works hard on developing features for tools like Xed, Mintlocale, Blueberry, Slick Greeter but they only work with MATE, Xfce and Cinnamon and not KDE.

  • @Xmetalfanx
    @Xmetalfanx ปีที่แล้ว

I undestand what Mint did ... i think they dropped KDE around the time that KDE Neon started. With Kubuntu and KDE Neon (two ubuntu based KDE flavors) ... and I think the KDE Mint flavor was the one used the least by users ... yeah i get it

This was posted 4 days ago.
This post is an announcement of the delaying of Feren OS’s big update that gives Feren OS the Ubuntu 22.04 base, as well as a newly redone Store application, currently now planned to release in July 2023 at the latest.
This may be even more disappointing than the last delay, but I would like to further delay the release date to July 2023 to provide a more realistic Feren OS big update release date that can be targeted. Initially, I was going to delay it until April 2023, but after reflecting on the time spent on Feren OS between November and January, a further extension to July was applied.
A balance between work, education and life has affected the speed at which work has occurred
Honestly, I hoped the release would be ready for November or January, but unfortunately I ended up being too busy with matters in real life to devote as much time for Feren OS as I thought I would have been able to.
Combine this with time spent on other projects, and Feren OS’s big update is not even ready for an Alpha release yet, mainly because of Storium being too incomplete for that so far.
However, ever since the initial delay until January 2023, I finally decided to properly gague just how much time I have for Feren OS, thus leading to today’s extended delay of the big update.
That being said, I would like to devote more time than I have done to developing Feren OS just to finally get this release out by July 2023, so hopefully I can make some serious progress happen between now and then, and maybe complete everything. 🤞🤞
Why not just release a rebased Feren OS on its own?
The reason I don’t just release 22.04-based Feren OS now, without the big changes planned, is that the big changes planned are way too drastic to just treat as any regular ol’ update - there is going to be a lot of transition work needed for existing users, which is planned to be taken care of by the Major Updater soon after this release finally happens.
The big update is going to be significant, it needs time to bake
I would rather that Feren OS’s upcoming release has to take all the time it needs, rather than provide its users with a half-baked implementation of what I set about to do back in 2021. This is going to be a release that is about equal in significance to Feren OS December 2019 Snapshot, and I am planning to pull out all the stops for this release, so I do not want to release it until it is finally complete.
      For now, have another teaser
Initially, I wanted to have a working prototype of the upcoming Store’s bonuses functionality, working with the (now called) Solstice module it will have, so I could demonstrate both that and Solstice itself. Unfortunately, I ended up being bedridden a few days ago for a few days, meaning I was not able to complete said prototype in time, so instead:
      Solstice
The upcoming Feren OS implementation of Ice, the popular Site-Specific Browser program, has gotten a new name, as well as learning a few new tricks:
A dialog asking who’s using the website shown. There is one profile, named “e”, as well as a checkbox below that to “Always use this profile”, and below that buttons to browse as guest, add a profile, or manage profiles.
      Solstice’s Profile Manager
First of all, Solstice is likely one of, if not, the first Site-Specific Browser programs to allow usage of multiple profiles per application. Got multiple emails on email services? No problem. Got multiple channels on your favourite video posting services? No problem. With Solstice, you will be able to make as many profiles as you would like for your needs.
Furthermore, the icons of Solstice applications you install are also themeable by icon sets - another first for Site-Specific Browser applications - and the browsers that these applications run in are also designed better for their purpose.
Vivaldi is behind, for the purpose of browsing TH-cam. Meanwhile, Mozilla Firefox is in front, for the purpose of browsing BBC iPlayer, although it is on the new tab page, currently.
Vivaldi and Firefox are distinctly designed for their purpose, with other supported browsers using their respective ‘website only’ modes
It is ready when it is ready.
While July 2023 is now the target for finally releasing the big Feren OS update, if it is complete and polished for release before July then it will be released sooner than planned, and if it is not ready by July then it will be delayed until completion.
Until then, enjoy a few more minor updates to the current Feren OS base, and consider joining the Discord Server for more rapid-fire updates on the development of the big update, and more.

So you have a distro with a history of working right out of the box (Mint), but you want to replace it with one that hasn't earned that reputation but is "pretty." Well, to each his own. I came to Linux in the bad old days when we had to struggle for weeks to get the damned thing to work. I'm not going back to that just for "pretty."

I came to Linux 15 years ago and my first distro was Linux mint, so I understand totally where you're coming from, but back then we didn't have the TH-cam coverage of Linux that we do now, we had to spend hours searching online to get it to run. If I for one minute thought this distro would do that to anybody, I wouldn't recommend it that way. Thank you for the comment and for watching the channel.

If I ever move to anything Ubuntu/Debian based that'll always be Linux mint. Linux mint will always have a special place on my heart. Linux mint is the one who made me interested in Linux as a beginner, trust me I've tried many other distribution as a beginner but none was able to hold me back from going to Linux mint again and again. It just feels like home for me. Unless I moved to anything that is not Ubuntu/Debian based I'll never leave Linux mint no matter how many Ubuntu/Debian based distro come out with their fleshy desktop and stuff idc it'll always Linux mint for me and other than that I'm not really a KDE person so it doesn't really matter to me. (IDK why community loves to hate on Linux mint when distros like Manjaro actually exist. And if you're a beginner trust me bro Linux mint is the best choice you can make rn you can move on after gaining some experience later but to get familiar with Linux, Mint is best option for anyone)

Love your videos. I have been using Linux for years now both Manjaro, Mint. In recent months however, First in Manjaro then in Mint v21 There has been a change in the kernel which has completely broken network connections to other machines, Linux, Windows and even my NAS. I was using hardwired mounts in the fstab file which worked very well. It stopped working a few months ago with Manjaro and now also in Mint 21. I have looked on many occasions for a solution to this and have seen a few different suggestions and none work. Samba has been broken for years and is not an option. So I have had to stay with Mint 20.3 as it works fine. It will be supported until 2025. So for anyone needing network connections to other shares, this is a problem. So, with all the reviews of Linux new distros no one is talking about the elephant in the room, broken network connections. To many users this problem makes Linux unuseable moving forward. Hopefully someone will figure out a reliable workaround and not 6 pages of edits to multiple config files. We need an app that allows you to find and auto mount your network shares that is useable for all users. I hate windows but... the networking works well.

I can't believe you're calling 700+ megabytes used by a desktop as "lightweight." There was a time I was desperately trying make my entire desktop environment and web browser in 256 megs of RAM... which ended up becoming impossible no matter what I did by the mid 2000s... but at least it could fit in, say, three or four hundred megabytes at the time if I remember right. The fact that KDE takes up over seven hundred megabytes these days does not speak to how "slim" it is these days (ie.: it's not!), but more to how ridiculously bloated GNOME itself has become, even to modern-day standards. Hell, at one point, GNOME 2.x could actually take *less* memory than its KDE 3.5 counterpart!
I'll take Xfce or Mate as a full-featured desktop environment any day, but I have to say... for a good modern desktop (which I can't even consider GNOME, that... "thing" has given up on the traditional desktop metaphor since 3.0) where RAM is not as much of an issue, KDE really is nice.

    • @StripesInTheYT
      @StripesInTheYT ปีที่แล้ว

I do NOT recommend this distro if you have a mixed network with Windows machines, a NAS and Macs.
I am not an expert, but I like trying out Linux desktop distros. Based on your review I tried this latest Feren OS. A mistake for me because an important requirement is it must work in my mixed environment. It did not. I have installed Mint, Ubuntu and MX21 and most times I have to edit the smb.conf after making sure Samba and smbclient are installed. Occasionally, I also have to edit the nsswitch.conf file. I did all of this and Feren REFUSED open Windows shares. It looks good, but lack function for me.
