  • Local Legend: the athlete who completes a given segment the most over a rolling 90-day period. But what would it take to become a Strava Local Legend in just one day? Always up for a challenge, Conor decided to find out by taking on his local Bathwick Hill climb 35 times in a single ride. That’s over 5,000m of elevation gain! Will he claim the coveted laurel crown?

    Did something similar in lockdown. Created an Alpe d’Huez inspired challenge to ride a segment 21 times in a single ride for our cycling club, and decided the 5km loop of Arthur’s seat in Edinburgh was the segment for me. Got some strange looks and questions from tourists when they started getting a feeling of deja-vu

      @@gcn It was great. We deliberately didn’t have any rules about which segment you could use so it varied from people doing laps along their street to others finding their nearest switchback and riding it 21 times. Arthur’s Seat was a good one. I had actually only intended to do a few laps that ride but decided to keep going!

    One of the great aspects of GCN is the different ways the presenters suffer. Firstly, we ALL suffer but it is fascinating how each one of you present your own personal struggles. Conor is a “heart on sleeve” sufferer who always admits his physical and emotional state with beautiful human honesty. I’m more in the if I admit that I’m struggling I’ll fail camp. Not a cycling question, but here it goes. Is it legal to park facing the opposite direction on roads in the UK?
    I find it interesting and it seems that it would not be a safe way to park.

    • @rjs_698
      @rjs_698 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that it's legal in urban areas (i.e. where there's streetlighting and a 30mph speed limit). If there are parking restrictions on one side of a particular street it's almost inevitable. Outside urban areas, or if the speed limit is over 30mph, you're likely to attract the attention of the Police, especially if it's nighttime. If you're really keen to know about UK traffic regulations then Google "UK Highway Code". I assume it's online now. This will give you as much information as you need - though I would stress this partly a best practice guide (it also, in the past at least, contains the legal position too).

    I don't see a how you're able to list them (yet) but the ones I have come (and go) from normal riding on the roads near home. I don't put any effort into them but that's because it's often not too difficult to get one here in NC where, unfortunately cycling (or any outdoor activity) is a relative rarity. My current LL's are:
    Ride Paradise to Second Beach 1.38 mi 127 ft 20
    Ride llaF ehT nO gnippaW 0.85 mi 68 ft 37
    Ride Middle Rd to second stop sign 1.14 mi 29 ft 28
    Ride a beach and a hill 2.98 mi 112 ft 33
    Ride Wyatt Rd West to Berkeley 0.61 mi 47 ft 35
    Ride Lucy's Lament 0.35 mi 94 ft 34
    The one I consider actually meaningful being Lucy's Lament. A nasty little short hill in an otherwise nice part of the world. Most folks duck it by taking two side roads to avoid it. The rest are really just segments I do a lot because they are close to home and I am bound to run over them - just when out riding. Not really climbing segments.

    I got 6th on a stretch up a hill, on a day when I was literally trying to go slow because I was feeling weary but still wanted to go on a ride. Only 20 people had even ever been recorded on that stretch, and it is a decent bike path.
