    The Best Running Back Ever!!

I think its the single greatest season by a college player at any position. His rushing yards were akin to a QB throwing for 7k yards and 75 TD's.

@@richardtaylor1027Lmfao. Get out of here. Emmitt is not even top 5. He played 15 seasons under possibly THEE greatest offensive line of all-time. Barry Sanders played behind the KNOWN worst line in the entire 1990’s decade. And STILL averaged 5 yards a carry his entire career. Emmitt Smith never ran for no 2,000 yards now did he…. No. He didn’t. AND Sanders did it off the least amount of carries than ANY other 2,000 yard rusher. He’s got the all-time record for most consecutive 100 yard games with 14 AND most 100 yard games in a season, with 14. The year he ran for 2,000 in 97. He won the offensive player of the year twice. And won the MVP that year in 97. He holds the record for most 1,500 yard seasons with 5, and 4 straight. And barely missed his 6th by 9 yards. He cannot be touched…. Emmitt Smith LITERALLY stated that he was “happy and relieved” when Sanders retired, because he KNEW he’d never have the record if he kept playin. Like I said, he played 10 seasons and retired at 30. After his age 30 season. Emmitt played til he was 35. Of sanders played that long he’d be the only player in history with 20,000 yards and that’s not even debatable. Everyone knows it. EVERY all-time great and ALL the coaches and ALL the columnists like literally anyone close to the game of football ALL acknowledge clear as day that Barry was the best running back to ever take a handoff. By far. I think I’ll listen to the likes of John Madden and countless others that clearly say he’s the best to ever do it. Because he is.

Yeah greatest running back ever who spent half his career running backwards!!! Emmitt Smith never ran backwards!! Emmitt Smith never quit! Emmitt Smith played Forever! Emmitt Smith won championships! On an offense that was centered solely around him... Emmitt Smith made Moves also! go watch the highlight videos! I'm so tired of the Barry Sanders bulshit!! the real historians that break down film have even rated Brown, Payton, Emmitt and Tomlinson ahead of him! he ran backwards his whole career he was a killer on third-down!! he was a great "RUNNER" but EMMITT WAS A BETTER "RUNNING BACK"

It is 100% the greatest individual season that any college player has ever had. 2,700+ yards, 37 TDs, 35 broken NCAA records, and had he returned punts and kicks during that season, he legitimately could have totaled 3,500+ scrimmage yards with 40+ TDs. That is insane.

In 1988 I lived near the OSU football stadium. Each morning when I was walking to class, I'd pass Barry Sanders as he was going to the stadium workout facility. I didn't know who he was at the time, but he was always wearing sweatpants and it looked like his thighs were feet in front of his torso. I figured he was a running back, because it seemed like it would be impossible to tackle the guy. And he always said hello... his decency is for real.

If he had came back for his senior season he would have blown away the NCAA rushing record. He was the starting tailback only one year as a junior and the back up behind Thurman Thomas as a sophomore before deciding to enter the NFL draft. In his one year as a starter he had a great chance to rush for over 3,000 yards if he'd played more in the 4th qtr of games but the team didn't need him too and he wasn't fishing for accolades or the spotlight.

Unreal. The knock on Barry was that he wasn't a tough enough runner on the goal line in the NFL. He ran goal line in college. So I don't know what that's about. I see him leaping over the pack like Walter Payton. Best ever pure runner. Most complete backs? Passing ,rushing, and receiving? Walter, LaDainian, Marcus, and of course Jim. But I'd still take Barry over anybody, anywhere, anytime.

Thanks for this great reminder of Barry Sanders Heisman trophy season. I remember how hard it was to see his games on the east coast. CBS would show game break highlights, but that was basically it. Cable was not very big where I was, but to see it all in great depth now is still mind blowing even after he has gone into the PRO FOOTBALL hall of fame. The cuts , the slicing up all defenses good or bad it did not matter. There are great backs everywhere, but for the height and weight, and balance, speed, he had it all. Barry is the best, and that is no disrespect to jim brown, Bo jackson, Herschel, OJ, Walter Payton, and on and on and on.He is at the top of all list, I will let others decide who comes first.

Could have been one of the best? Barry is consistently ranked in the top three. Most of the rankings I've seen put the top three as Jim Brown, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders in no particular order. Some make a case for Emmit who has the most yards. Yes, he has the record and that counts for a lot but it doesn't get him into the top three. It's about how you gain the yards that matters when it comes to being the best. What back made the most impact with the least help for the most time? These three guys win these metrics hands-down. Who was the best at fighting the most for the longest time? Look at the footage. It's Brown, Payton and Sanders... It's these three guys. Nobody has better footage. I'd say Peterson and OJ are clearly the next two. It's a toss-up between several guys like Cambell, Dickerson, Emmit and Marshawn for the next 4 spots.
Look at this list that has Gayle Sayers as 3rd best with less than 5,000 yards. That's sentimentality. I get it but please... Put him in the HOF but his bad luck puts him out of the running for best back. Bo is another guy that was a shooting star but when we talk about best backs of all time you need a component of durability. Bo and Gayle don't have it. They're not even in the top 10 in my list.
On the other side of the coin you have backs who were durable and/or played for amazing teams. If you're getting more yards running behind a stacked line with HOF QBs and WRs that's just statistics. It counts somewhat less because your team is helping you get the yards. Counting championships is also relatively meaningless if the supporting actors don't give the RB a chance. Rocky Bleier and Franco Harris have 4 SuperBowl rings... Nobody counts them on the best-of list.

No other college back could compare to his junior year. He wasn't playing for a blue blood program like OU, Nebraska, ohio State, Georgia, USC, Texas, Michigan, etc. Oklahoma State had a good team in the upper part of ther big 8 conference but they couldn't as a team get the conference title. Sanders and Thurman Thomas at least gave them a chance. He wasn't the biggest , fastest, or tallest just simply THE BEST EVER. His ability to hesitate and do an instant shake and direction change as well as his balance was inhuman and unfair. What other pro back could have had the NFL rushing record but retired instead with no regrets.

No two players were spoken of by their colleagues and coaches more highly, than Barry Sanders and Lawrence Taylor. Everybody was in fear and awe of them. As individual players, those two could change a game on any play. QB's and WR's need each other, and a decent o line to make a play. Barry's Lions line was not that impressive, and Lawrence Taylor could disrupt the best offensive schemes. Two Goats on the mountain top

I was a freshman in college with my sports nerd buddies and by about mid-October we started knowing this kids name who put up 189 yards vs. Nebraska. Then something special happened... And this is some really crazy stat lines.... starting the last week of October. 320 yards vs. Kansas St. put him all over ESPN. He followed that up with 39/215 vs. ranked Oklahoma on national TV. Then 37/312. 32/293 at Iowa St. Then there was this weird game in Tokyo ESPN2 broadcast at some weird time: 44 rushers, 332 yards. Breaks the NCAA record for rushing yards BEFORE the bowl game. Then he tacks on 29/229 and 5 TD's on December 30th, which I have to say is the first and LAST bowl game I've ever watched on the 30th of December. I tell everyone. This is what Barry was with a lead blocker and actual tight ends on the field. A running machine that no one could stop. I love me some Jim Brown, but man how I wish I could have watched a prime, 23-year old Barry Sanders on a team actually coached well.

Sanders would probably prove just as good now or better because he could catch the ball out of the backfield as well as return kicks. Imagine the big money NIL deals he could garner these days. Trying to make big hits on him would be futile he had too much shake ,smoothness, and balance in him. More importantly he was a class act. It would be refreshing if more players now were as humble and classy as he was on the field.

Does anyone know his turnover #'s? I honestly can't remember him ever fumbling the ball. No doubt Barry Sanders is the most humble man/ greatest running back ever!!

Watched hi. Play as many did that year and the following, but what made him so special moreso than his playboys his attitude, never ever look at me moment, ever....he hi-5'd hus team mates only because they initiated it....just like the pros...humility made him greater....even defenses didn't try to hurt him when they were able to tackle....other players of humility he was like was Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson and Marcus Allen.... are the only ones that come to mind with that kind of class after big plays.

    37 TDs! Think about that.
Derrick Henry had 28 rushing TDs in his Heisman year.

Imagine having Barry sanders on your bench. Ok st might’ve gone undefeated if they used Barry and Thurman at the same time.

Barry Sanders didn't play football, he played TAG. And broke a lot of guy's ankles doing it.

We dont see RBs of this nature anymore. Every dam year the top RBs in draft were all no namers during the season and just favored within their schools of popularity respect. Every dam year of the draft, we always seeing the RPO types of RBs and they all average football players with a top speed in the 4.5 speeds at the 40. Its more than a QB and WR of great talent but the RPO schemes all more flag football type of players ( A level Flag football players have this vibe of QB and WR game) I really miss the old style of football when they were true football players of specific skill set of their position, today the starters all playing due to the 40 yard dash time which leaves out the other skills we all used to seeing. An all RPO offense sucks due to flag football vibes of scoring fast and often but if the team wins, its all good for their fans. Just game has gone to a level of leaving out players of specific skills over players who made and started due to their 40 with exceptions of the Linemen.

The craziest part about it is when the season started Hart Lee Dykes, was the Heisman candidate going into the season and Barry ripped it away from him and the rest of the nation.

The legend of Barry Sanders only gets better. And it’s real.
Mike Gundy ~ “Same thing. Them just not being able to tackle him. I remember him continuously scoring…He didn’t play past the 3rd quarter except for 3 games.” 🤯
I wonder what if…what if Barry could’ve been a full time return specialist throughout his career? Unrealistic and not “smart”, but what if?

So awesome to see a player who doesn't focus on themselves by jumping around like a fool after a good play or touchdown. Parents taught him right even though as the greatest player ever he had every right to do just what I said these idiots do. The best of the best always do it this way.
