You both are very intuitive. It is, in fact, a song that originated in Russia, and Mary Hopkin was very young and innocent, still a teenager, when she recorded it...both things you picked up on from the very first listen.

Mary Hopkin was one of the first artists signed by the Beatles Apple label, I think that this song was produced by Paul McCartney, it is a traditional song originally coming from Russia, you should listen to the Goodbye sung by her.

Such a beautiful song and crazy that Mary Hopkin was only 18 years old when it has been released (1968)!

Would it be considered ironic that listening to this song made me look back bittersweetly to the days when I first heard this song? Thank you for this reflection.

Great reaction. Your first impressions of classic music often brings me happiness amidst the bombardment of depressing news here in America. I enjoy your thoughts and conversations - and glean much unpretentious wisdom in what you say. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you bring to so many around the world - it means so much more than you know. You are both blessed for having such a wonderful family. If only everyone were as peaceful and as loving. Much Love to you both - God Bless.

Mary Hopkin was discovered on a talent show called Opportunity Knocks in the 1960's and was signed up to a record contract with McCartney Records. She won the talent competition for several weeks.

An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days", This is not a translation from the Russian song "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" which means "By a long road" The song in Russian Дорогой длинною ("Dorogoy dlinnoyu"), was written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. Mary Hopkin had the biggest and best-known hit with this song

Thanks for the info ! The backstory of this song is much more interesting than I imagined. I first heard it as a AM radio listening kid of 12 and noticed the rarefied quality ; and the message was not lost on me, as I led a life of adventure to create “good old days”, on “the road less traveled”.

Yes another fine singer from Wales, land of song. A very sweet young woman; do see a video of her singing it. From Wales, of course there's Tom Jones, but also diva Shirley Bassey, opera singer Bryn Terfel (maybe try him singing the soft Welsh song Ar Hyd y Nos)... male voice choirs (e.g Morriston Orpheus choir singing Myfanwy). and the crowds singing at Wales rugby matches (e.g the Welsh anthem, Wales v England, 2013, on youtube). Do try 2 choirs on Britain's Got Talent: Cor Glanaethwy (Benedictus, heavenly, you would surely like) and Only Boys Aloud (Calon Lan)

I like this song. We sang it in school in the chorus. The ending is particularly harmonic, it brings back wonderful nostalgia. It also has a Russian feel to it, as you noted. It’s a great lesson.

When I heard this song as a kid I felt like an old person thinking back and now when I hear it it feels like yesterday.

This came out in 1968, Mary Hopkin was Beatles Paul McCartneys girlfriend, he wrote and produced a song called "Goodbye" for her. she sang a like a fairy princess. I have listened to the Russian version and the vocals are very harsh and sharpe did it rhyme when its sung id Russian. Marys version is my favourite version.

This is wonderful, I agree with most on, but not on her age when she sang the song...
Looking back with fondness or longing, to a place in your past is ageless, why does one need to be old or have had pain!
There is a Welsh word "Hiraeth" which translated into English can mean "a longing" "a yearning" even "home-sickness" But many a Welsh speaker will say "Does dim gair yn Saesneg am hiraeth" -"There is no word in English for hiraeth"
Mary Hopkin sang "...days" with "hiraeth" 18 or 118 age doesn't come into it.
