They would not have these extra draft picks or money to sign FAs. With Mack their D was complete garbage and paying Mack would guarantee that it stayed that way.

Maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes a guy is just not worth the cap in that point in time. You can spend massive money on a defensive lineman, but if the rest of your team is only iffy, it's a waste. Look at Houston with JJ Watt. What did they win? I don't think they've even won a playoff game. Look at the Rams with Aaron Donald and the stacked talent they have. They were taken down in the first round last year. The only time it's worth overspending on a top tier defensive player is when your defense is already great. You want to keep it great. It'd be different if Mack was on the Eagles, Jags, or Vikings.

What happened this weekend is what happens when your teams ownership gets way too desperate. I agree that it a hefty price to pay, but they dont have a lot of others needs that they need to take care of anytime soon. With Mack he gives you room to drop guys and pick guys up as you see fit with not much pressure; Example Brady. In theory, he plays three spots. He contains the rush like the best DE in the league. He rushes like a top tier 3-4 OLB and he's so dominant over the OL like a very good MLB would. He is plutonium to this team. Its either extremely good or extremely bad. Either way, it will change the course of the bears for years to come. No obvious reason why it wouldn't be for the best.
Oak is smart. You do not win in the NFL by paying a defensive player QB money. Mack would have to have 35 sacks to justify a qb price tag. Look at NE for example. There is a reason why they often trade away a defensive player instead of paying huge money like Chandler Jones.

Maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes a guy is just not worth the cap in that point in time. You can spend massive money on a defensive lineman, but if the rest of your team is only iffy, it's a waste. Look at Houston with JJ Watt. What did they win? I don't think they've even won a playoff game.
Look at the Rams with Aaron Donald and the stacked talent they have. They were taken down in the first round last year.
The only time it's worth overspending on a top tier defensive player is when your defense is already great. You want to keep it great. It'd be different if Mack was on the Eagles, Jags, or Vikings.

I agree that it a hefty price to pay, but they dont have a lot of others needs that they need to take care of anytime soon. With Mack he gives you room to drop guys and pick guys up as you see fit with not much pressure; Example Brady. In theory, he plays three spots. He contains the rush like the best DE in the league. He rushes like a top tier 3-4 OLB and he's so dominant over the OL like a very good MLB would. He is plutonium to this team. Its either extremely good or extremely bad. Either way, it will change the course of the bears for years to come. No obvious reason why it wouldn't be for the best.

Oak is smart. You do not win in the NFL by paying a defensive player QB money. Mack would have to have 35 sacks to justify a qb price tag.
