    ABOUT US
    GrowingDeer.tv was created by Dr. Grant Woods as a means to share his love for managing and growing white-tailed deer. Grant’s passions in life are God, family and hunting. Grant has been hunting since the third grade and has degrees from Southwest Missouri State University, University of Georgia, and Clemson University. His goal is to provide current, useful information about deer hunting and deer management in an on-demand video format.
    Our episodes show what we are doing in the field, our hunting and management activities, week to week. A new episode is released each Monday, 52 weeks a year with no repeats. We occasionally share special mid-week episodes on Thursday or Friday if we’ve had an action packed week of hunts or habitat management projects. All our episodes are available for viewing anytime at GrowingDeer.tv. GrowingDeer.tv episodes will include action packed hunts, proven hunting strategies, food plot and trail camera techniques, practical advice for common problems and the gear it takes to get it all done.

    I had never considered the timing of the terminations or burns before. This makes so much sense as to why you should change this up.

    Why in the world would anyone give u a 👎?? Thanks again Mr. Woods for every nugget of info you give in these videos.
    If a person pays attention and applies just some of your practices they'll see a beneficial difference in the way they hunt.

    First and foremost I want to thank you Grant for taking a stand for your Christian beliefs. I also want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience freely. With that being said, I do have a question. If you have a growing season fire and it kills the hardwood saplings, what will the deer have to eat over the winter? The Forbes will be gone and browse of the young hardwood saplings will also be non existent after the fire. I am not questioning your expertise by any means, just looking for some clarity on this.

      Thanks for your kind and encouraging words! I don't recommend burning entire properties and deer in Kansas, the Dakotas, etc., survive brutal winters without any saplings. It's the quantity of quality food during the growing season that primarily carries deer. Saplings - woody tissue - are very low quality food and may keep a deer from starving, but certainly don't help them thrive. Deer are genetically programmed to consume great quality food during the growing season and store fat to survive the winter. Saplings provide very low quality food during the growing season and prevent high quality food from growing. The North Dakota deer provide us a great lesson!

      My dad never put it that way (we didn't hunt together but worked a lot together he owned a construction business).. but I truly appreciate all the time we shared and how he taught me to think for my self and figure out problems by my self. Priceless skills no matter what your kids end up doing. 👍

      Josh - There's no denying that the intensity of many storms has increased and it snows much less where I live now than it did when I was a child. There's also no doubt there's way more carbon in the air. The good news is that simple steps can be used to sequester carbon! Burning is mostly carbon neutral - some goes into the air during the fire and the new vegetation takes a LOT out of the air!

    Does a growing season fire kill more ticks then a dormant season? Also if burning in the timber do you only want to do dormant season so the energy is still in the roots?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ben - there are lots of variables but it's likely that most growing season fires will kill more ticks. Only low intensity, backing fires should be used in mature timber!

    If I do a perscribed fire during dormant season in an area that Clover was planted and weeds over took the plot the previous season but before the Clover wakes up. Will the Clover come back or will it be burned out?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ben - there are lots of variables but the clover and weeds may come back. Any seeds in the top of the seed bank will be released by removing the duff and exposing the soil to the sun's energy.

    Does the ash from a prescribed fire help to increase the ph?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some! Wood has has a pH of about 7.0 to 11.0, pending on the type of wood.

    Can a hay field be crimped?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carl - Probably not. Crimping works best with annual plants that are producing seed which are almost mature - fully formed but not hard yet. Consider that driving over a yard doesn't kill the grass, neither will a crimping a hay field.

    I am needing too get more into prescribed fire, but have always been intimidated by the chance of an accident. I have watched your videos that focus more on the process, but still feel like I would need more mentorship/help. Who could I contact for help or at least more local information on this?

    • @GrowingDeerTV

      Nolan - Many states offer prescribed fire classes. You are wise to get some hands on training before doing a prescribed fire.

      Arsenal AC the sweetgum

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prescribed fire is a great tool but it's very unlikely that it will control four year old sweet gum saplings. I recommend a treatment with Arsenal AC herbicide followed by fire!
