The main thing I've been able to come up with is that Republicans felt they had to rally behind their guy. Ever been in a court room? so here’s how it works the prosecution presents its case THEN the other side presents it’s version of the case or it’s counter to the case that’s been presented many times in total and utter destruction of the prosecutions case . Then and only then the jury decides I’m guessing you’re the kind of guy that wants to listen to the prosecution and then as the judge just say guilty. I hope to God you’re not in the court room as a defendant someday
