I'am looking for this book in almost all the bookstores in my city but unfortinatly in vain . Currently I try to read it on line. After his Split with Arabella, the unfaithful....Jude has juste arrived to Chrisminster... Thank you for your good work.
I’ve been enjoying your Hardy playlist. “Jude The Obscure” is probably Hardy’s most memorable novel. I first read it when I was about 19 and it certainly appealed to my teenage sense of drama. Jude and Sue seemed such an admirable romantic pair rebelling against the social mores and class structure of their time. When I recently reread it decades later my reaction to the story had shifted a bit. Now it appears to me that many of the troubles of Jude and Sue were self-inflicted. Sue seemed very confused as to what she really wanted. Jude seemed to be unable to focus in on where his primary responsibility lay. Jude made his living as a skilled stone carver for churches - he and Sue being so open about not being married seriously impacted that source of income. As we know, this was totally irresponsible and precipitated the calamities that fell not only on the couple but others as well. For me, the appeal of Jude has cooled a bit since this rereading. [In Claire Tomalin’s biography of Thomas Hardy there seemed to be many people or instances in his life that could have inspired aspects of Jude.]
So glad you've been enjoying these Hardy videos. I made them assuming most people wouldn't watch, so I'm glad they're getting some attention. I'm definitely the same as you in that my love for Jude has cooled a lot since my first read as a teenager, it's still one I go back to again and again though, and always get something new from it.
Convinced. Definitely on my TBR rn. Never read any Hardy. Only have Madding crowd at home coz i dunno how i’d react to the tragedy in his other works. But perhaps it’s worth it!
Hi Jen. Thanks for your reviews. I have just finished reading Hardy's novels in chronological order and after each one I watched your video for that book. It was interesting to hear your thoughts and I looked forward to hearing them, so thanks again. Best wishes.
You're welcome, thanks so much for watching. I always love to hear about someone else reading all of Hardy's novels, do you think you can pick a favourite? I found it so difficult to compare them that it was almost impossible to pick out the one that I liked best.
Hardy is far and away my favorite author and Jude the Obscure has been the most influential of any novel I've read.
I'm a teacher because of Jude.
