I have to come home EVERYDAY & argue with my brother over this shit. He SWEARS that “if we do this dropshipping thing for long enough, we can quit our jobs and hire our mom as an employee.” I’ve tried & tried & tried to tell him that shit like this would have been a good idea in 2011, but Amazon has stepped their game up. If you figure out how to do something better than them, they’ll undercut you. If you figure out how to be nicer, they’ll drop their prices. If you figure out a unique product, they’ll make it for cheaper. Amazon wins. I would usually test a product using a "pre-order" method in which if I got enough traction on a product, I'd order the product in bulk and use a fullfillment center in the US, that way new customers would have sub 5 day shipping times. Unfortunately I have shiny object syndrome, and that's why I eventually quit.

Mini market/convenience store in an essence is a dropshipping business that exchange the convenience and availability without adding any value to the item itself, which meaning that even without adding value to items, you can still make profit.
Justin above already pointed that marketing is a viable exchange for profit. MLM(not a pyramid one) is an example of exchanging marketing with profit. Marketing items that has no selling power outside of its own region internationally will give you profit.

Dropshippers, on the other hand, literally just place an order and have it shipped to their customer when their customer makes the order, meaning the customer literally could have just bought the same thing for a lower price from the source. The whole point of drop shipping is that you don’t need to hold any stock, meaning you can’t get bulk or wholesale discounts. The only value you’re adding is marketing, but remember that a certain amount of marketing had to be done for you to find it in the first place.

Think of why they put candy bars by registers at Walmart or lottery tickets right by the checkout in gas stations. It's the same premise, just with an online platform. Hey Jake. Good video! Here's an alternative viewpoint. Dropshipping, while in most cases is not the greatest long-term business model, it's an EXCELLENT way for beginners to quickly learn a bunch of business/digital marketing skills. Anyone that goes through the process of running a dropshipping business from start to finish has to learn how to:
    1. Do market research & competitor analysis
    2. Decide on a business name and register a domain
    3. How to setup Shopify / email accounts / payment processors / edit themes
    4. How to design a logo & edit images / use photoshop / video editing software
    5. How to write good website copy, product descriptions, ads and come up with different marketing "angles"
    6. Set up social media profiles & run Facebook ads
    7. Read data, set up reports, manage cashflow and look at business metrics like COGS, ROAS, ROI etc.
    8. Basics of conversion rate optimization
    /split testing
    9. Source products, deal with suppliers & negotiating
    10. Writing job descriptions, interviewing/hiring staff, writing SOP's and training manuals
    ... and more!
These skills are all invaluable and best of all, transferable to any future ventures/projects!
    Just my 2c :)

Theres a lot of confusion so I wanna clear some things up.
Dropshipping is just a fulfilment method. Theres a lot of different ways you can incorporate it into your business. I sell supplements on eBay for different brands and the supplier offers dropshipping instead of buying in bulk.
You have to actually find the product and market the product and run the ads. Your just connecting buyers and suppliers just like any other business. I’ve been doing it for a over a year on eBay and its really profitable and sustainable especially during the pandemic.
I use domestic suppliers so 2 day shipping not 3 weeks.
You said there’s almost no value. That’s like saying marketing agencies provide no value. You said it’s been around for a few years when its been around for well over a decade.
I’m assuming you took a shopify dropshipping course and got no results so your putting down the whole business model when you can do it on eBay, Amazon, Etsy etc.
Not hating on you I just think your misinformed.

@@nzmanhdee6246 you can't just say it's oversaturated. Dropshipping is a fulfillment method, why would the fulfilment method affect anything. You could say a specific niche is oversaturated but even that's a stretch since saturation has pros and cons of its own.

This is so true! I've attempted to create my own dropship, print-on-demand Shopify store (actually... a couple) for the last 9-10 months and eventually had to drop everything completely for these exact same reasons, and a few more. I even tried to ignore "nay-sayers", like this video for example, but eventually came full circle with the exact same realization. The main conclusion (among many) I kept circling back to time and time again is "value"! And I'm not willing sacrifice to the quality of the product I sell, or the service I offer just to make a quick buck.
