Gold found guys, gold Found!. You saved me! Yet the video is 8 years old. The VM booted after recreating the missing VMDKs. How I deleted them in the first place is still a mystery. Thank you!!

This is a very well produced video. Not only did it help my solve my problem, but the additional pop-up windows within the video with helpful information (such as the vi commands) helped save me time from having to perform secondary (and tertiary) research, which usually distracts from the original issue at hand. Thank you so very much!

I followed the steps. I see the VMDK in the Datastore Browser. However, I ran the vmkfstools -e "example".vmdk command. It came back as a failure to open disk link. The system cannot find the file specified. Disk chain is not consistent.
    Any tips?

So, is it possible to do the same thing from the command line, in Windows 10? I have access to the files but not through ESXI

Oof. Good thing I found a backup of the file. This whole command line process is too complicated for a Windows peasant like me.

apparently the disk in question was SATA, the machine does not list any scsi devices. Therefore, the "less *.vmx | grep -i virtualdev" bit yields no controller info.

Does this process need vmx file to be there already ? Cuz my vmdk & vmx files are missing and I have only flat.vmdk left after I removed my vm from the inventory.

Please, help out here. Though the VM started up fine; unlike before that it keep asking for the missing vmdx file but this time around, its asking for OS. This vm vmdx file that turned virtual machine file type to flat file was working before. I wouldn't know what made it go flat. I really, really want to old vm as there are some legacy software with licence running on it.

Really nice video! But what if you don't find the flat file neither? Very strange. Even the directory where my VM points to is not there in the /vmfs/volumes. I can find 2 other vmdk files and their corresponding flat files. But I can't tell my VM to use 1 of these. I can't even edit settings of my VM anymore, it always gives me an unexpected error happened. So my flat file is not really orphaned. What should i do? It's a ESXi6.5 without vcenter (i only have 1 vm)

but i lost Windows 10 x64.vmdk, so i can not open the virtual disk in vmware player
could you tell me how to create Windows 10 x64.vmdk file?

    I accidentally deleted `Ubuntu-disk1.vmdk` from `C:\Users\anum.sheraz\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu\ ` . Now I don't have any file with `.vmdk` extension in my VM directory. I see you have TestVM-000001-flat.vmdk. What do I do ?

Worked awesome for me. I was stressing! Steps I needed to do in addition were... F2 Physically on the local server and allow ssh. I waited a day after the vmkfstools -e "example".vmdk failed. It worked the next day and the server booted up.

You install putty on your PC & then enable SSH on your ESX host server via the security tab in VCenter.

Почему вообще это происходит? Перезагрузил хост и виртуальная машина не запускается - причем с железом все ок! И "отличное" решение подключаться по ssh и править ручками :( И это коммерческий софт :))

after all these years there is no inbuilt repair tool that is automated for the simple lock and vmdk descriptor issue.... that's really disappointing. seeks the open source community is going to catch up then this product will be worthless.
