The host didn't stress that the lotus seed is hand-kneaded one by one, on top of that the arduous long cooking process and ingredient needed. $4.20 for a authentic old-school desert like this i still find it cheap. Many stall proclaimed that their desert was hand-made. Unbeknown to the consumers, many used factory pre-made ingredient. so be thankful that someone willing to make the sacrifice to continue this legacy.
@@俞嘉琳-x6c perhaps the op used the wrong word, but each lotus seed does have a bitter inner pith that needs to be removed before cooking so the stall owners still have to put in alot of work to prep this dessert. Thus justifying it's higher price.
@@俞嘉琳-x6c I think maybe he just used the wrong word, cause when I was young, I often saw my grandmother rubbing lotus seeds. Because fresh seeds actually need to be taken out from the whole lotus pod by hand, and then gently rubbed to remove the film on the surface, and finally use a toothpick to remove the core of the lotus seeds. ( As u can see, every lotus seed in the video is complete, so this step requires a lot of patience. I know many people will say that this is not heavy work, but it does take a lot of time )
This series is SOO GOOD!!! Can't wait to try them all. I rarely will try or even intentionally look for these. But after watching this, definitely tempted to try more traditional desserts. Good Job!
I admire Uncle. At 83, he looks fit & his voice is still clear/ strong. Hoping I’ll be like him( I’m elderly). I wanna eat his desserts, especially the lotus seed one.
I agreeeeeeeee! House of Dessert uncle looks so fit and really healthy! And uncle lee is funny XD aunty yenny seems very friendly and cute too. Would like to try all of their desserts one day!
The peanut cake is ig worthy to me! I like the minimalist style so I prefer the aesthetics of simple looking things over complicated ones. Makes me want to try it even though I usually don’t like peanuts
So sweet of the older generation...it is true that they are a more resilient and hardworking lot as they been through a lot. "It's okay if I earn less..."🥺🥺🥺
Lotus seed soup! Didn't expect to find it in dessert stall so I fix my craving by cooking it. Not difficult to cook but must buy good quality seeds which are like $30+ per kg. If unlucky, even at this price, may not get fragrant ones and remain hard after boiling. I will eat 3-4 bowls in one day. Get a good sleep and radiant skin the next day. Yes, lotus seed is a natural beauty supplement!
I have tasted lotus seed dessert during late sixties. I was seven. It’s the best, still the best. The memorial is still very fresh. During my 28 years in S’pore I have not tasted it again. Actually, lotus seed dessert is not an every “ dessert store “ item. It’s more like endangered species. So glad someone is still making it using the traditional way.
Thank You for a very delightful presentation. The peanut sponge cake was most inviting...Next when we come to S'pore we shall buy one and enjoy it with friends....Perth, W. Australia
They have this issue for all the past episodes in this series. Last two episodes were way worse, can have entire sentence half the sentence with wrong words that kind. So I would say there is improvement in the accuracy but i am very curious how they are doing chinese subtitling and who is approving it if there are so many errors
Looks like Singapore is losing a lot of more traditional food compared to Malaysia which you can still find them around quite easily. That Terigu 大麦 dessert still can be seen in the dessert stalls but with corn I think it's very rare. I used to buy it often many years ago. The dessert stall at my hawker place still sells it :D Love red bean soup 红豆沙 with mandarin peel that's Cantonese style and not easily found outside. Some desserts are meant to be eaten hot LOL. Cold just doesn't have that taste. That peanut cake looks so good, love those old school cakes with just a thin layer of buttercream. Unfortunately I cannot take peanuts hiazz That lotus seed dessert needs a lot of time and labour comparing to a cup of more expensive and not so healthy BBT which the youngsters will buy without hesitating. Feels so sad for the hawkers...no wonder nobody is taking over their business.
Apparently these youngsters does not know the cost of lotus seed. 1kg of dried lotus seed is around $40. $4.20 for a generous amount is consider very cheap. The amount of work to get a tasty dessert like this is very laborious.
real whipped cream made from fresh cream is not made from vegetable oil. the one made from vegetable oil are those articial topping/frosting filled with sweeteners and stabilisers and is a way cheaper alternative to the real thing. whether whipped cream made from fresh cream is higher in calories or not vs buttercream is very subjective. it really depends on the recipe and ingredients ratio
To ensure the continuity of the traditional desserts and their existence, not only should the making of such desserts pass on to the younger people, the younger people should also be educated to consume such desserts. Why talk about vanishing trades and food but not vanishing consumers or users of the goods and food?
Ah right…again, the compulsive need to point out people’s physical characteristics although it has no bearing to the situation and has no meaning whatsoever….
Which dessert are you most interested to try! 🤪 ALSO! Selamat Hari Raya to all our Muslim friends! 🥳
👍

I'm sorry to contradict your comments, but I'm afraid that lotus seeds are the seeds of lotus flowers, not hand kneaded one by one.

Uncle Lee is very friendly. I often buy from him when his shop was still in Commonwealth. The cakes are great!

Chiara, thumbs up for making effort to speak chinese and also being mouth sweet sweet to the elderly! Good job!

The lotus seed looks so good. $4.20 seems fine to me since a cup of BBT cost around the same. Cant wait to try it next time!!!

The price of the peanut cake has maintained for many years in Commonwealth. The boss is really 佛心. 😍
One of your best episodes. Keep it up!
Use hard labour to cook $4.20 find it very expensive. Bubble tea and Starbucks so expensive but ok to buy frequently. 😂😂
Old school deserts is comforting
Terigu dessert ( bubor terigu) can be found in some cafes/ stalls in Singapore. I eat this whenever it’s available.
I like watching these videos with Chiara as the host. Good job hosting, Chiara!
Thank You for a very delightful presentation. The peanut sponge cake was most inviting...Next when we come to S'pore we shall buy one and enjoy it with friends....Perth, W. Australia

I like this episode :)! Just my humble feedback, perhaps need to check the Chinese subtitles, some words are incorrect.

Well done, just ordered my peanut vanilla cake after watching lol.
Appreciate them while still can... :)
the lotus seed soup looks great! It is more pricey than the other traditional dessert is because ingredient lotus seed is much more expensive.
Im going to order some cake for the weekend!!!
Old-School Memories!!!
🤩🤩🤩
😌Thank you so much for this lovely and fantastic video
youngster now willing to spend 5-6 dollars for bb teasss , but wont spend 4.20 for quality traditional food.

My fav is their red bean and black glutinous rice dessert ❤ always go for it when I’m there.

bro the squeal i let out when i saw the chiara notification
Didn’t the uncle from the dessert stall say his lotus dessert was $1.50 each? How come Chiara said it was $4.20 each after? Confused…
Actually, it's $1.70 for the other types of desserts, but for the one that Chiara ate it is $4.20.
Dessert is an aftermeal boost, serve in smaller portion
Nice
cute xmms😍😋
I have only had Terigu in army in our ration packs 😄

As a 01 child, I prefer hot version for traditional desserts.
I always pronounce it as Pulau Hitam too lol
