    I don't know how many people remember apple II+ computers, but I built a turtle robot from old dot matrix printer parts and used turtle basic to send the robot commands over a parallel interface. You could write any turtle basic code and the robot would execute it, that was back mid 80s early 90s. There was no jpg pictures to send it. It drew on the sidewalk with chaulk. Turtle basic AKA LOGO you can give it a distance and an angle and pick up or put down the pen that was about it. But it did make great spirograph drawings very easily. That was the first robot I ever built. Everyone loved to watch it draw. I dont know if it was the first chaulk drawing robot or not, I know many turtle based robots started popping up around that time, mostly with a pen to draw on poster board, but it may have been close to the first one? No idea really. I just remember the months I worked to get it all working. But everyone had questions and loved watching it.

    • @JohnDlugosz
      @JohnDlugosz 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't think an Apple II could handle decoding a JPEG. Early PC's (without floating point co-processor) struggled with it.
      Your project sounds cool -- how old were you?

    • @newmonengineering
      @newmonengineering 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @JohnDlugosz i was in the last year of middle school /first year of High school it was summer that I finished the project. I got parts from old printers and radio shack back then. Anything I could find to make it work. The challenge was the parallel cable, they are big fat and heavy cables for a robot to move around with. But I did get it all working. I don't know if I even have pictures of it anymore. I lost a lot of things during a divorce my pictures are probably long gone now. Back then it was just 35mm or Kodak pictures. Physical storage is harder to keep when moving.

    Another way to cover lots of area is a string/cable-type bot. You'd need at least 3 motor bases that reel in or out string that's attached to a central carriage. It has its own interesting set of complications, of course. Regarding firmware, you should always consider searching for one that fits your exact application, because it's usually been done before, sort of.

    Pre-process the coordinates and lines/curves to inverse map from cartesian to polar. The result should be that when drawing a square, the robot thinks it's drawing a wave shape (peaks, with curves downward and back up to the next peak). The wrap-around can be solved by using double-cover rotation- the total area it draws in should be 720°, the normal 360° plus 180° more clockwise and 180° more counterclockwise. The design is laid out in this double-wide XY space with placement on the left half or right half based on what makes the most continuous line.
