    I grew up on a farm out in the middle of nowhere in Georgia, and I was 19 when this movie came out. Rented and watched it alone in my parents' place, and boy was that a mistake. I ended up checking every lock and window in the house before I went to sleep, and even then couldn't shake that feeling that someone was 20 yards outside the house watching.

    Underrated part of this scene: when the reveal happens and you see the leg. There's no big banging music. Theres no screaming from the character. It's simply the chilly quiet theme and a gasp. This movie deals in a subtlety that other "scary" movies could learn from

    • @rockr10

      If this film was shot today by a different director, the jump scares would be the driving gimmick rather than setting up tension and leaving the creatures to the imagination. A good example, the film "A Quiet Place" is also about extraterrestrials and fate.

      @Goldenkitten1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Plausible scenarios" lol. I'm not going to knock on the low hanging fruit because we all know the massive plotholes this film has. I honestly think the only reason it works is the personal nature of it, it makes you feel like you could be these people because you get no information that they don't. If the story had expanded to include a wider cast the major issues the plot has would not have flown under the radar as easily.

In the movie the Aliens are on earth for three days. Two days of scouting and one day invasion. They knew the water was toxic to them.
      So they invaded for a quick grab of anything useful and getting the heck out of there. There is a theory, which makes sense, that they are a species on the brink of extinction because their world had a huge natural disaster. So they are going to planets to grab anything useful. I love the nuances in Mel Gibson's acting. Notice how when he exits the crop circle the stiffness in his body when he steps back and turns around to leave. He tries to act tough but, this small detail sells his level of fear so well. Mel Gibson is such a great actor.

    The most unsettling thing about this scene is the look on Mel's face at 2:48, after he yells out at people that he knows are truly not there. And that awkward backwards walk to follow as you can see the increasing horror on his face. He knows he is completely alone in the middle of a crop field with one or maybe more of those monsters. I think he knows it before he even enters the crop field. You can hear a slight trilling sound before he even goes in as the dog starts barking more aggressively.

He HAD to do the stupid and unthinkable and walk into the belly of the beast to prove to himself that he's in denial. After he walks away and sees the leg, there's no doubt in his mind.

    There are some parts of this movie that are seriously a masterclass in suspense. M.N.S. really knows how to draw out emotion without resorting to tropes. This scene, the roof scene, the birthday party sighting scene, and the basement scene with the hand through the coal chute are all no joke terrifying. My only complaint with this movie was the ending. I think MNS just leaned too hard into underlying plot at the sacrifice of a more satisfying ending.

    2:25 it really sounds like at that point he's trying to convince HIMSELF more than the "nerds"

    You know I think the aliens were just trying to scare people until the invasion and not actually harm them. The alien behind Graham in the cornfield, while Graham was in the cornpath, just scared him. He could have hurt him if he wanted to but he didn't. Although I still believe the aliens had hostile intent and the invasion happened, it gives new meaning to the theory that the "invasion" was perhaps the aliens were trying to make first contact, and locals reacting with fear and hostility.

      They were observing the level of danger. The military guy was talking about it to Merel when they went into town.

      Interesting theory... so perhaps when they have done this on other planets the home species could have been scared off the area. Plus also assessing the danger. It's possible... 🤔

      Maybe the aliens shouldn't be so damn ugly and looking like they're anorexic. Those big, bulging eyes of theirs staring into your soul. I can't imagine being bottom if these freaks have a reproduction process. Two slugs in the eyes I'm telling you.

      @@krypton1982 There's a neat theory on the movie where the aliens are actually exiled and starving, and we were just the nearest possible source of food, so they took a crap fleet they could muster and brought it to earth. Makes it really terrifying to imagine they lost because they were so impossibly desperate. And if there were that many exiles... how many others could there be?
