Nice. Here in Australia we didn't get FM radio until 1975 so it's unusual to see radios this old with FM.

Nice to see the Aerostar in the background. Those are never seen anymore in the northeast for years now!
Impressive how the dial scale is not too far off after all these years, considering it is such a cheaply made radio.
This was the type of radio that would sit on the bench in a workshop in the 70s, 80s, 90s and get buried in dust, beaten to death, and ultimately tossed in the trash when it stopped playing.

Birth control transistors. Haven't seen those in ages. Looks like the radio was in quarantine for twenty years in a garage.
Love the test capacitor jumper technique so well demonstrated to bring the old caps back alive one by one. Just leave
the outside sun worn shiny plastic alone so it looks like a scrub of a radio. Shango-rific repair.

My first cassette recorder was a Realtone in late 1971. It lasted about 5 years. The motor started running slower despite fresh batteries. I didn't know how to adjust the speed on the motor back then.

    • @MattExzy
      @MattExzy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

They still are, in a way. You can listen to 'radio' on your phone for instance over a streaming app - but the phone needs millions/billions of transistors, software, network infrastructure etc. I know it's a stretch to compare it to modern day technology, but a transistor radio really is an elegant device.

Hello from England. I was going to wish you well in your recovery but no need now! But I will just say thanks for the channel. As someone who spent their childhood knee-deep in transistors (OC71s & BC108s), assorted resistors, diodes and capacitors, the occasional op-amp, soldering irons, etc. etc. I'm always happy when I see you've uploaded a new video of hardware from the 80s. Unfortunately, I was good at taking things apart, never so good at fixing them!

@@volvo09 ~ a few years back we found a GE dual-cassette 'contractor's radio' released in the suburban wild. Some mecha bits had worked loose and it was missing a few of its control knobs and switch covers. Put it back together and got it working. Rigged some knobs and switch covers to be able to run the thing. Recently nabbed a set of the proper knobs and switches so the wee beastie can live again...

"....CHEAP radio...." Well, to be fair, a cheap radio is better than a high quality radio you cannot afford to buy.
We like to reminisce about the well built radios of the 50s and before and their handsome cabinets and their serviceability and so on while overlooking the fact that they cost a small fortune.
The radio of the 1930s and 40s might have been more than a week's salary for most people and certainly a working man. A teenager working a part time job could easily afford this one and have extra money for his gas tank or a date with the girlfriend at the movies.
And a portable radio was much bigger and went through five dollars (five genuine silver dollars) in a few hours.

5:44 - When I heard the brand, my mind went back to the 60's and 70's, and the utter disappointment I felt picking these sound-alike brands, light as a feather, boxes one would pick up, and the box would go out-of-square, and or the battery door wouldn't close, the volume knob always loose, off center, and static-y... Those were the type of radios given as prizes at boardwalk Wheels of Chance, which when brought home turned out to be not so much of a prize. The one in your vid doesn't look too bad quality, and the glob of lead on the antenna shows the former owner not only used it, but cared about safety too. And the fact it still works shows it was cared for. That glob of lead piqued my interest in the history of this one.

I have never played with one of those but I would imagine would require at least 20 to 30 ft minimum for an antenna

Most of the dongle types don't do those frequencies without a converter, although the sdr programs 'tunes' them. Might want to check the specs on yours.

@@audiokaos4703 agreed. These will not tune the lower bands without a converter.

I'm playing with one of them RTL-SDR ones too - just not very sensitive. You get what you pay for I guess. Kiwi-SDR or FlyDog-SDR are higher performance I would expect.

This around the time Realtone became Soundesign and things went downhill from there. Regardless, even low end stuff back then doesn’t match the lowest of the low end crap coming from you know where today.
