- Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d'Arc, was a remarkable figure whose life continues to captivate people's imaginations centuries after her death. Born in Domrémy, a small village in northeastern France, in 1412, she would go on to play a pivotal role in the Hundred Years' War and become an enduring symbol of courage and devotion.

Joan's early life was marked by her deep religious faith and a sense of destiny. Growing up during a time of turmoil, with France divided by the war between the French and English, she experienced the hardships of war firsthand. From an early age, she claimed to have heard the voices of saints, including Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, who instructed her to support the dauphin, Charles VII, in his bid to become the rightful king of France.
Inspired by her divine visions and motivated by her desire to see France liberated, Joan embarked on a journey that would make her a legend. At the age of 17, she sought an audience with Charles VII, who, impressed by her conviction, granted her an opportunity to lead the French army against the English. Joan donned men's clothing and, in a historic departure from societal norms, took up arms as a warrior.
In 1429, Joan led the French forces to a series of stunning victories. She played a crucial role in the lifting of the siege of Orléans, which had been under English control for months. Her military successes boosted French morale and paved the way for Charles VII's coronation as the rightful king of France. Joan's achievements earned her the nickname "The Maid of Orléans" and made her a national heroine.
However, Joan's fortunes took a turn for the worse. In 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians, who sold her to the English. She endured a lengthy and contentious trial, accused of heresy, witchcraft, and dressing inappropriately for a woman. Despite her unyielding faith and eloquent defense, Joan was found guilty and sentenced to death.
On May 30, 1431, at the age of 19, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, France. Her execution was a tragic end to a life marked by courage and conviction. Yet, Joan's story did not end with her death. Decades later, a retrial overturned her conviction, and she was declared innocent of all charges.
Joan of Arc's life and legacy continue to resonate across time. Her unwavering faith, her audacity to challenge societal norms, and her unwavering commitment to her cause make her a symbol of inspiration and resilience. Her story has been told and retold in countless books, plays, and films, further immortalizing her as one of history's most remarkable figures.
Joan of Arc's life represents more than just a tale of military triumphs and tragic martyrdom. It encapsulates the power of faith, the strength of individual conviction, and the impact that one person can have on the course of history. Her example serves as a reminder that ordinary individuals, driven by extraordinary beliefs, can change the world.
What did Joan of Arc look like?
In terms of Joan’s appearance, we have hardly anything to go on. The only image that remains from Joan’s lifetime is merely a doodle, made in the margins of French parliamentary notes by Clément de Fauquembergue, who had never seen her in real life.
There is also a statue head from a church in Orleans. The statue dates to the 15th century, and given Joan’s association with the city and the feminine appearance, for many years historians believed this might be a depiction of her. However, in more recent years, this has become less likely, and it’s now generally believed to belong to a statue of Saint George.
Luckily, we do have many descriptions of the ferocious warrior.
We know that she was short - probably around 5’ 2”, and very muscular with a strong neck. She had dark hair, cropped short with bangs similar to the men’s hairstyles at the time. Artistic depictions of Joan actually popularized the bob hairstyle in the early 20th century. Her eyes were described as “large, dark, and grave”, and matched her skin tone, which was tan and sunburned from her time outdoors.
So, in terms of the re-creation, this is mostly an artistic depiction. But I’ve used these contemporary descriptions of Joan, as well as some influence from the statue head (since there is nothing else solid to use as a jumping-off point), to bring you what she might have looked like.

Fun fact: there are more churches and shrines dedicated to her in England than in France. She may have helped to defeat them, but the English really took a shine to her in the end.

@@GerMFnU1848Sax I'm afraid I don't have any. It's only something I've seen written here & there. I've tried to find any decent list of things dedicated to her, but I can't.
At the very least, there are certainly a number of churches dedicated to her in England. And the Church of St. Joan of Arc in Le Touquet was apparently the first church in France dedicated to her, in 1911, only two years after her beatification - but at the request of _British_ Catholics, since it has long been a popular tourist resort.
So I do believe it. The English have always respected a worthy opponent, even in defeat.

Her story is so amazing. Her piety encouraged her to command her troops not to swear, nor treat women crudely (a huge accomplishment in those times), and to act with actual chivalry. During her trial, which was at first public, her bearing, poise, and thoughtful answers under harsh questioning began to turn many of the observers to her favor, so much so that the court was forced to declare further proceedings to be private, and had all the onlookers expelled. So glad you honored her in this way.
And got amazingly murderd and none of hundreds people gathered by stake did nithing to stop it. More over were trowing living cats in the fire. So... thank you, aoreciated hearing now how hreat she was especialy that none of amazing humans moved asses. Such a good race worth saving.

What was important to me before the reveal is that she have features generally typical of young French woman with dark hair. The fact there wasn't much mention of her looks during her time suggests she looked like an average young French woman. That's not to say unattractive, just normal. I think the artists made a brilliant guess with this interpretation, well done.

Exactly!! The opposite of the cinematic versions of her by Ingrid Bergmann and Milla Jovovic (although I LOVE Luc Besson's version of Joan of Arc and MJ was stunning it, great acting skills) who are tall-thinned blonde and blue-eyed beauties. Certainly not the short, brunette with big dark eyes strongly build peasant type. I loved that recreation and although as a french-raised I knew of course about the history, the treason by her French counterpart included, I knew nothing about her looks. She deserved the crown a thousand times more than the prince she helped make king 👑!! That man become king only thanks to the tenacity of 2 women: his mother and Jeanne d'Arc!
hello French here. I wouldn't say there is an 'average' French look. We are quite a mixed bunch. People from the South look different from people from the North who look different from people from the Eastern part of France :-) There are many blonds in the more Northern and Eastern regions of France where Jane was from.

You included many important details often glossed over such as: The period of uncertainty she experienced after the initial appearance of Michael until she received specific directions on what she should do; The initial rejections she experienced from leaders and soldiers prior to gaining their trust and admiration; And, also, that she wasn't merely 'captured' by the English but betrayed by fellow countrymen who were collaborating with them. Those are only three things among many you touched on. But, together, they present a much more complex portrait of Joan's story and vivid sense of her as a person amid her enduring legend. Thanks!!! Me too. And that recreation at the end is...i cannot describe the feelings and emotions that these pictures create in me... seeing her in her armor before battle . Like a posterbook french maid. She looked a bit shy even. So human and (un)real to see her, staring into her eyes through hundreds of years. It looks and then feels like she is still alive. Im truly mesmerized.

Joan's story rings true even today. She can teach us, to never give up on faith no matter what darkness we are facing. And that we will get through it no matter what.

Except she didn’t get through it. Did she? She was tortured and murdered by the authorities she trusted. The lesson I get from her life is “Trust No One” but it’s good others see something positive to it all.

Her father, Jacque was the ''prévôt'' of the region under Robert de Bandricourt.

@@RayB1656 Robert de Baudricourt was capitaine of Vaucouleurs in service of king of France to manage little territory in this region who was under direct control of France since 14th century so technically she was french and was in France from the start. In this region they were speaking french like in most of Lorraine duchy. Like Hainault or SAvoy was speaking french as exemple not all roman germanic empire was speaking german.
We will never know exactly what she looked like , but what an inspiration she was .

The trial of Joan of Arc feels very relevant to today. People in power telling marginalised people their perspectives don’t matter.

"Marginalised" dont refer to Joan in that undignifying manner, unlike you all she didnt victimize herself and whine
I don't see how it's comparable, Joan of Arc wasn't marginalised otherwise she wouldn't have cherished such influence and power. She was someone in power, not at the top certainly, but well above the common people, and eventually her family became nobility.
And that's why she was executed: she had influence, power and motivated the troops of their enemies, they suffered defeats because of her, she's an enemy that needs to be got rid of.
If at first they were reluctant to execute her, it was because they didn't want to make her a martyr.
I always say to myself to just skip to the recreation and then I end up listening to the whole story! The final reveals always give me a chill. Thank you for your work!
That is the best, most succinct and lush description of Joan's career I've ever encountered. I think she looked exactly as you depict her. Love your channel. I never really got how she went awry because most retellings are so full of her saintliness that you can't imagine a flaw or mistake. She just wouldn't stop fighting. But she was young and she was human. Thanks for telling the story without diminishing her power and importance. She really did act like a Hand of God.

After all she did for him, that "king" wouldn't even lift a finger to help her when she needed him. I hope you do queen Boudica too someday. Shes an icon! Queen Elizabeth I admired her greatly and used her story as an example of her own reign.
I was always been outraged by Charles' abandonment of Joan after her capture.
There is a context. Very young Charles is already known to be a bit soft and indolent, and then he gets caught up in the usual succession disputes and court intrigues. His own mother turned against her 16-year-old son, forming a government to rival that of her son. The latter was disinherited by his own mother and declared a bastard.
In addition, his mother supported the marriage of one of her daughters, Catherine de Valois, to Henry V of England and had her son-in-law recognised as heir to the kingdom of France in place of her own son Charles.
Charles VII had a temperament that was constantly under influence, first from his mother, then from advisors and other powerful people, and finally including his favourite Agnès Sorel.
A weak man whose adolescence had been too violent not to hope for order and peace. He probably never wanted to be king, and he probably wasn't cut out for it.

The great silent film, "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (1928)," directed by Carl Dryer, is a timeless and definitive depiction of the trial of Jeanne d’Arc. I truly believe an historical epic of fitting scope must and will inevitably be produced about her life one day, once a major studio recognizes just how inspiring such a magnificent story would be to the entire world.

I have admired Joan D'arc, known as Joan of Arc, the maid of Orlean, since I first read about her as a child. She is a great inspiration to all freedom loving people. I loved your presentation and I found your depiction of her face to be about what one would expect her to look like. What a story! a seventeen or eighteen year old girl, not a transgender, received instructions from God and led the armies of France to victory. It is too bad she didn't wait until the French were ready to mount their grand offensive that finally defeated the English.

This could not have been a better time to see this video. We’ve just returned from Rouen, where we were lucky to see the cross that was shown to Jeanne d’Arc right before her execution. It was displayed at the church named after her during Rouen Armada, which we were recording for our channel, that just came to an end today. Your representation of Jeanne is very touching and somehow feels closest to what she may have looked. Thank you for the inspiration!
