  • Spring is upon us, the carp and spawning, and that means bowfishing season is here. This week I'll show you how to make a cheap, easy, and effective DIY bow fishing reel from just a few simple items you probably have around your home. We'll need a tin can, an old hacksaw blade, some tape, a section of bike innertube, and some nylon string. This bowfishing reel works great and, if you use the right size can, will hold a gopro for some cool slow motion shots.
    Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow making, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

    The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel th-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

    Very nice, I love DIY builds. I made a custom slide hammer for archer buddy some 15 years ago, he used it to get arrow heads out of targets. Could be a good DIY project for you.
    Had a different buddy back in like 1982-ish with a new line set up on his bow.
    Anyway 1st shot he had this red curved line across his face like a kid with marker drew it. Didn't have it right.

    I saw somebody make one using a tin can in the small size, a hole in the back of the bow and the right diameter and thread bolt that fits the screw in stabilizer/bowfishing spot on an SAS flat limb connection Target bow Possibly a Chinese knockoff using tin snips that to cut a slot I hope he filed down on in very front of the can for the string to sit in to prevent unrolling. He was using either fly fishing string or actual bow fishing string the way the string looked.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good solution

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clayhayeshunter It worked and all he spent was on the bolt at a hardware store and the string. The reason I am not sure, but it seems it was to have string so he could wind up without overlapping on its self too much and possibly messing up when exited getting a fish since it is hard to fish seeing the way the string was on the Reel when he was shooting.

    Question please - my recurve is not 'centre shot' as you say and it likes 500 spine arrows as a result. The fishing arrows are heavy and no flex - can I cut a bit out of the rest until the arrows are sitting straight and so use a heavy arrow or ultimately a heavier spine arrow? It's just a cheap Chinese bow that I have started out with so it's not bow mutilation so to speak.

    Great bit of equipment, unfortunately it's incompatible with the types of bows I shoot. Asian styles of recurve bend so close to the handle that modern equipment would stop it from working properly. Maybe I could attach the reel to a belt, or stake it in the ground. I'm open to suggestions.

    • @mikecranford1927
      @mikecranford1927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For asiatic bows you can stick it in what djhao dynasty archers called the "hoo-ha" just check that it's centered deep and keep a real tight grip.

  • @notapplicable531
    @notapplicable531 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only thing that I would do to this project would be to add some kind of soft padding on the reel so that the snake skin on your bow doesn't contact the hard wood of the real. Marking up the skin would be a shame.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A piece of soft Velcro on the wood would solve that!

    I remember we shot a 5 ft gar with 3 arrows. We pulled it to the boat. I tried to pull it up and I barely missed a bite from him. We shot it in the head with a pistol and pulled it aboard then caved its skull in with a wrench. It was still fighting so we kicked it in the glory hole to wither away till cleaning time. Good memories.
