    Cannot say enough great things about the LA 40.
    This thing was ROCK solid and had crazy power and reliability. I remember moving from this to a .46 FX and being even more impressed by the power.
    OS knows how to make the good stuff for sure!

    THANK YOU so much! My uncle gave me an rc plane fore my 9th birthdy, 3 years later i decided to make it run. Couldn't get to the screws to dismount the engine from the plane because the muffler was in the way. Now i know how to get it off! Earned a sub today my dood!

    Sir I love your videos - some of the best content out there for those of us who think electric motors just lack all the character of IC engines.
    Coming from Japan those screws will be JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) head and not the common Philips head. Get yourself a JIS screwdriver (a company called 'Vessel' makes great ones) and engine disassembly will be much easier even with chewed out heads. ❤
    Also just a fun aside, the Philips head design was literally designed for mass production, and for assembly by workers of all skill levels.
    Because of this, the Philips head is actually designed to 'cam out' if excessive torque was applied. By 'cam out' I mean the screwdriver will automatically ramp up and disengage with the fastener head. I'm sure most people have experienced that feeling.
    You will find that JIS screwdriver will not want to cam out nearly as much. Cheers from Australia ⚡

      Not on the video itself but as a learning opportunity for others for future engines.

    They're great motors for the money. Easy to tune and reliable. Not a power house but theyll do the job. I've got 2 that both have over 200 flights on them and they were used when i got them. So who knows how many they actually have.

      Buying a used .45 version today. 2nd time on nitro. First was a used HPI Savage. Electric is amazing but I’ve been aching to play with nitro again.

    The LA engines I have ran on planes do run surprisingly well despite their shortcomings

  • @toralfcross3819
    @toralfcross3819 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't prefer the cross point screws but I feel like they might save a very small amount of weight in comparison to socket head screws and I also think if you take good care of a LA series engine you probably won't ever need to take it apart because they just have bushings so if they wear out you throw the crankcase in the trash and if you crash and the engine injests some dirt that should be the only reason to disassemble the engine for cleaning unless you neglect the engine for years

    I actually find the LA series have been very good reliable engines. I have used several over the years with no problems, and not necessarily entry level at all. Your dislike of them is kind of funny, Have you used them in planes over long periods of time? I do enjoy your videos and have subscribed, liked and watched many of them and will watch many more.

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the LA series is the replacement for the FP series and yes the FP series was designed as an entry level sport engine. That is the facts whether you agree with them or not.

    • @AJwesleyify
      @AJwesleyify 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I'm saying is they are good enough to be your only engine if you desire. I realize they are cheaper and that may in itself be the reason they are considered entry level. I have had great success with FP series also. I have had all brands of engines and the only one I actually threw in a garbage can was a TT42. I had bb Thunder Tigers and they were great but that 42 was a lemon. I appreciate and enjoy your videos. keep then coming and I will watch.

      I never said that they weren't. I am simply expressing my personal opinions, but I have NEVER thrown away an engine.

      I have accumulated over 300 flights with two 40LA 200 flights with my Falcon 56, the rest enyoing my Hobbico Superstar. Good reliable engines I can tell. Just recently I acquired a 46LA I don´t know if I am going to notice any difference between 40LA and 46LA. We will see. Alberto

      @@chevy362000 The LA 40 and 46 felt identical back in the day. The AX 46 was the motor to get if you wanted more power for the same weight. It was rare to see an LA in anything but a trainer or a light scale model where they were an inexpensive option.

    David, I'm having some issues trying to start a 40 LA like the one on the video. It won't start at all!! It's an old engine, ran great, but I had to replace the carb for a brand new one. It ran twice very well, but now every time I turn the propeller, a good amount of fuel comes out of the small hole right on the front of the carburetor. Is that normal? Can you tell me how many turns from fully closed should that adjusting screw be? Thanks

    Here in Chiapas Mexico, we have all the year a warm weather I mean the lower is 10° C (50°F), so a OS # 6 glow plug burn out rapidly, So we use in all our 2 stroke engines OS #8, works excellent (good idle), 2550- 2700 RPM and 10% Nitro fuel an 18% lubricant Castor/Synthetic, This engine is a good runner and economy in fuel (6 Oz.) in 10 minutes flight with management of throttle.

      OS recommends the no.8 for the LA series. Seems like they are designed for colder plugs or lower nitro content.

    • @otm646
      @otm646 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Up here flying in the northern US frequently flying in below freezing conditions in the winter and over 100F in the summer the #8 plugs are ubiquitous. I don't even think I've ever seen a #6 in an OS. The Super Tigre guys played around with them but they always seemed to have issues no matter what.

    OS probably is like almost every manufacturer in our progressive modern double-gilded age. A disposable product designed as cheaply as possible to run just long enough with customer service designed to insulate them from customer feedback.

    Dave, I know is has been years since you made this video, but do you remember if there is a gasket between the backplate and the engine block. Mine does not have one, and it didn't look like yours had one on it. The parts diagram shows one I think. It is drawn kinda funny. Thanks.

      Does your engine leak from the rear cover? Does the crankshaft bind when you rotate it over? If no to both questions then I guess it really doesn't matter.

      @@dmrcflyr2 Haven't ran it for 15 years. Getting it going again. Took it apart to free up the engine and noticed there wasn't a gasket there.

    People destroying a screw head that did not a JIS screwdriver to remove it is funny and sad. The right tool for the right job always works. Its like putting diesel in to a gas engine and blaming the motor manufacturer.

      Way back one could buy the engine in the aluminum color for $59.95 and the anodized blue sold for $64.95. Same engine but the color. Neither are made anymore but one can find them on eBay.

    This la engines of o.s 0.10 to 0.60 are the lowest level quality ever....
    Much more worse than the fp engines fron 80 eas....
    Poor material , engineered, and probably performance...
