Something else to consider for the "Do Not Interact" badge - it's not necessarily something you'll wear the entire con. You might have fluctuating social energy, where sometimes you're open to conversation and sometimes you're not. And even if you do wear it all con, you don't owe anyone interaction, suit or not. Just because you don't like to interact with strangers does not mean that you don't deserve to go to and enjoy cons!
it might even be useful when you're like in the middle of acting something or playing a community game and you need to make sure that you're not interrupted

I wish people understand that sadly some people look at fursuiters and immediately think they can do anything to them because they are cute and cuddly. Sadly people forget that there’s a person under suit and don’t know how that person is. I don’t get why it’s a problematic thing that fursuiters want people to know that “hey there’s still a human in here who has feelings and needs!” 🤦🏾♂️
Honestly, it's the same with dogs 😅 people just think they are entitled to pet the floof. They see fluffy, they wanna pet the fluffy, it's surprising our species didn't all get eaten by sabertooth tigers or something 😂 But humans are getting better (I think) so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before everyone gets the respect they deserve.

As a service dog handler, who is thinking about getting a fursuit at some point, I have a very similar experience with the general public and labeling my dog. His vest is clearly labeled with, do not interact, do not pet, and several other things. However the amount of people who go out of their way to try to distract or interact with him is astounding. He is the main reason I can go do things, and distracting a service dog can be very dangerous. It’s very simple, the general public doesn’t care about anyone but themselves. If they did there would be more accommodations, less fake service dogs, no blocking the accessible parking spaces.
Honestly people who disrespect service dogs and their handlers piss me off. I don’t have one, but I have friend who does (however it’s more for social/emotional reasons than mobility, she’s trained to facilitate social interactions so this applies less to her). Disability education in the country in general needs to be better, people need to be taught and respect that when a dog is working leave them alone. It’s disrespectful and dangerous to interfere with someone’s disability aid.
You're oversimplifying things- there are people everywhere that are dumb and selfish, but there's not just one entity called "the general public" that's selfish. Just a bunch of individuals you have the misfortune of coming across.
@patrickhector if its commonplace enough, it becomes "general public". While we are some of the good and respectful ones, it shows that a lot of the people around us just don't act they way they should, and as a society we still have a long way to go.
7:39 this actually taught me why artists in artist alleys have "no photos" please signs up, hell I went to a Renaissance Faire recently where some of the shops have these signs up. I had assumed it was because they didn't want people trying to get photos of their art to then use illegally or try to scam people with (ie using the photo they took as a wallpaper when the seller has a wallpaper option on their shop or making a post on Facebook marketplace or whatever with the photo they took in an attempt to scam someone into buying something they don't have) but the actual reason (I assume?) being that they don't want people to copy their designs and potentially push them out of their market with cheaper more unsustainable copies of their work makes way more sense
Dealer here: ding ding ding! You are correct! its (in essence) to protect against Art Theft. lots of people see something they like, put ZERO thought into the process or ethical reasoning of how/why we sell art, and just say "Im going to take this thing and sell it too because you make oh-so-much money so doing this that it is okay!!" I make 12k a year. like. that is my day job INCLUSIVE salary. lots of dealers REALLY do not make as much as you think, please dont commit art theft. like even if you do and say "oh well im just having one made! for me!" There is A Reason that we have SO MANY of certain items. it is because there is a minimum required order. if someone who isnt the original artist claims they can make you Just One, and sell you Just One, newsflash: That person has already stolen the design and is making bootlegs to sell en masse as you speak.
@@knotsoangelic Copyright infringement. It’s the same crime as piracy. If the artist is really pissed, the max sentence is 1 year in jail and a 100k fine. That would never ever happen, but it’s technically the max sentence.

I would have the awkward but friendly badge. Also this reminded me of this social battery pin I saw once where it was a bettery and you could move the little lightning bolt to where your social battery level is
Just imagined a version for spoons: it's square. It has a dial. On top are spoon-shaped holes, on bottom is text. Turn the dial, the wheel inside has one of two colors, the main badge color and a contrasting one. As you run lower on spoons, you turn the dial to make more spoons "disappear".
Stuff like this has already existed for some time actually. One that comes to mind is collar or vest tags that are yellow and say "anxious". However, even though they've been a thing that shouldn't discourage you from making them. There's still plenty of demand
@@wingdingfontbroThey exist to be fitted/used with fursuits too :]! Patches made for pet vests can be bought separately, so people tend to put them on their leather bags and backpacks when there is a lack thereof suit to wear them on
If you're a small content creator, copyrights are pointless because you need a minimum of $10,000 to spend on lawyer fees to protect them against people who stole it from you. Trademarks are a bit more straightforward to defend, but still require a warchest of at least $3,000.
This is part of why IP law is so malicious. It's given people the belief that ideas can be owned, because they see companies fighting each other over ownership of ideas, and then they imitate that in fights against other artists. Some of them get so obsessed with the idea of IP theft that they spend more time arguing about copyright than they do actually making anything. Copyright should be abolished.
Patents are deterrents, most big companies that sees a patent will either try to modify the design or ask to license the design from the patent holder. Or Chinese manufacturers produce them and then you’re tough out of luck because international patent laws don’t apply to them
You did such a great job on this video!! I started tearing up with how you and so many others have been so positive about these in, and out, of the community 💚 Thank you!! 😭💚💚💚
Kinda stunned people didn't know about badges like these. Many service dog handlers have a ton of these. There is a huge mix of people who make these. I've made them myself several times in the past. I can't be the only furry with a service dog out there who is surprised at the public acting like this is a new thing
it's simply recency bias. something is new for someone (normies without service dogs and not in neurodivergent space in this case) and thus they assume it's new for everyone else
A lot of lines are heavily blurred at conventions. In life I'm an introverted hermit woman who still doesn't remember my neighbor's names even after several years. At cons I'm an orange blur, I'm all over the place with hyper stimulation and that takes it the fuck out of me. I'm autistic and communication is difficult for me as well as understanding cues, I tend to miss a shit ton of things and very simple, legible badges would make my life a whole lot easier. Also let's not forget the people who think it's ok to full on tackle someone if they're in a fursuit while 1. Not asking, and 2. Could have any number of unseen/unseeable medical conditions or injuries that being tackled or squeezed super hard in a painfully tight hug could exasperate.
I think society could be a LOT better if "consent badges" were common. Like, you see a stranger that had a badge saying they want hugs and if you like giving hugs, give a hug! You can't just go around hugging people without asking and asking if you can hug someone comes off weird.
@@hughcaldwell1034 I doubt that would ever happen. Some areas are very "hands off" while other areas are very "hands on" and even within those areas there are differences. Then it varies by day. One day someone may want hugs while another day the same people would want to not be hugged.
@@MmmHuggles Obviously there's regional and contextual variation, what I'm talking about is shifting the baseline, so that making a friendly offer to a stranger isn't treated with suspicion. Yes a lot of other things would have to change, but those changes would also (in my opinion) be largely positive. And yes, some people will want hugs and others won't - which is why I said offering, not just running up and hugging anyone you think looks slightly lonely.
People on the spectrum come in all flavors. Some don't handle ineraction well, some don't see cues easily and blow past consent accidentally. Furry has a higher incidence of both, and these badges help both and everyone in between. I think it's awesome.
I bought the "please do not touch me" badge a few years ago to wear while fursuiting and people have been so respectful of it and always ask before interacting physically (can I get a hug, can I see x part of your suit closer, etc.). I can't recommend these enough.
These would be amazing for any con! I am super sensitive to loud noises so I would definitely grab the sensitive to loud noises one to wear for Sakura Con 2025!
Thanks for posting the link. I saw these all over the place at my local furcon and haven't had luck with finding them online. I need that "prone to overheating" one at work in the summer! 🥵
4:00 the first thing that came to mind for me is... if you're in a full fur suit I assume it's VERY hard to read body language and you can't really read facial expressions either. Also just because you are in a fur suit does not mean you want to be petted. Feels a bit weird using this comparison... but you don't tell someone with a shy or skittish out on a walk "Well if your dog doesn't want to be pet why do you take it in public?" You don't touch someone without consent and just like at any other con... cosplay... DOES NOT equal consent.
Also a good use for the do not interact badges. For me it is pretty hard to get into a mindspace and once im in, I get really stressed when i get thrown off. So I migth go into a convention, with a "do not interact" badgeto get to know the venue, and do my run threw artist alley, because I'm pretty high stress in these situations and can't interact as good. But afterwards, when I know the place and have done everything in the more crouded places, i can collect myself take of the badge and be social. You don't have to wear them the whole con, but change them as you go. Also, for people with anxiety problems, it can be a good idea having a little sign "I don't need help, I just need a moment to myself" So if you sitt somewhere collecting yourself, you don't get people ask you if you are ok, because they think you have a breakdown.
And to add on that, adding a line that mentions something akin to "Friends only please!" or "Friend only quiet zone" can go a long way for optionally greenlighting your friend groups that you're with and/or make while there. ^^
@@optiquest86 It would probably even be a good idea for some people to just take a blank sign or so, to write custom additions you might want others to know in the moment that you maybe can't foresee upfront

Once more, furry acts as an exemplar for how society as a whole should work. I am both very friendly and very anxious, although furry conventions are probably the setting outside of my home where I feel the most comfortable. Still, my social anxiety/Avoidant is active even there, and so an "awkward but friendly" badge would really help me relax. I feel like I live at the intersection of Anxious and Friendly streets most of the time. :P
I just got a badge from papayabadger the other day! I have 2 now. I’m autistic and I have fibromyalgia. Because I have a lot of social anxiety, i sometimes get so flustered and anxious that I’m not thinking very clearly & trip myself up, make mistakes, & am a little slow to answer questions. I’ve yet to wear that one outside of a furry con cuz I worry about bullying & harassment. The other badge I have says “feeling fatigued; low energy” with a low battery icon. I’ve been wearing that at home a lot since I’ve gotten it! It’s really helpful especially when I’m feeling very quiet/anxious/nonverbal & can’t or don’t feel comfortable speaking out loud about it. But I really needed a way to let my roommates know when I’m feeling super fatigued without having to tell them out loud and wearing the badge has helped me a lot! I love being a furry 🥰 I hope consent & disability badges become a widely accepted and used part of society!
I am a furry but I could honestly use these at work and out in public, because some people don’t know that I tend to freak out when strangers touch me. I’m semi-ok with it, especially if it’s older folk, they don’t know, but it’s better to be safe than having a meltdown/freak out I can’t control about it later
Having a badge that says "Prone to Sensory Overload" would be a godsend. I don't know how to communicate that to people when an overload happens. It just looks like I'm freaking out with no explanation. Having a disclaimer on my person that I can point to would be a chef's kiss.
I really want one that says something to the effect of "Is friendly despite appearance". Just as someone who is told constantly that they look angry or mean, even when Im just trying to make friends."
0:27 if I was there I would’ve just gotten the “please be patient with me” “awkward but friendly” “ask before hugs!” And “give me space” (I have audhd and hate being crowded, I’m socially awkward, and I hate being touched without permission. Even if it’s just a simple hug)
Kind of unrelated but I was selectively mute in my childhood so my mom made me this necklace type thing with cards on it that had images with basic requests or needs on them (like thirsty, bathroom, and much more) so I could show a teacher whenever I needed something. I forgot about this for the longest time but these badges reminded me of them again.
This is so cool! I love consent badges like this, visual indicators like this would take the stress off of knowing how to verbally communicate my boundaries (I am terrible at being upfront about my comfort level LOL)
Those badges are actually such an amazing idea in general. Not a furry or neurodivergent (although my friends are convinced i have adhd lol) but I'm often accompanying my friends to cons to handle certain social interactions for them (like ordering food for them, chatting up people they're too anxious to talk to etc) and maybe those badges could help them be more comfortable and less anxious about it all, thus enjoying the event more. Hopefully they catch on outside of the US as well ^^
They weren't the first people to make consent badges, or the only ones who do. you frame this very much like they own the idea; 3d badges arent even the only style, a lot of laminated ones exist and have for ages. I understand the fear of bad actors, but framing it this way makes everyone else who makes and sells similar items on their own merit from other parts of the world; seem like they're copying this person. We did the original indicator badges here in Ontario for ages because we had never seen anything like it anywhere and wanted to bring something new and helpful to our cons; and have seen a huge rise in this sort of merch in the past year or two now.. I had no idea these existed at other cons in the states and have never heard this person's name before, but this video now gives me the fear that people wills ee this and think we're copying them. I don’t get why it’s a problematic thing that fursuiters want people to know that “hey there’s still a human in here who has feelings and needs!” 🤦🏾♂️

@@amberspark9434yeah, respect them the same way you would respect like a police dog or smt. It's on duty, don't bother it!

I agree w everything else except the wallpaper thing. You’re not redistributing the art at that point, it’s considered personal use and isn’t theft.

If you're a small content creator, copyrights are pointless because you need a minimum of $10,000 to spend on lawyer fees to protect them against people who stole it from you.
Trademarks are a bit more straightforward to defend, but still require a warchest of at least $3,000.
Copyrights aren't fair when a corporation can sue, but a small artist can't.
And this is capitalsim in a nutshell after all.

Kinda stunned people didn't know about badges like these. Many service dog handlers have a ton of these. There is a huge mix of people who make these. I've made them myself several times in the past. I can't be the only furry with a service dog out there who is surprised at the public acting like this is a new thing
it's simply recency bias. something is new for someone (normies without service dogs and not in neurodivergent space in this case)
and thus they assume it's new for everyone else
Want one that says "not from your domain." Or "perceive with caution."
“BE NOT AFRAID” and “REMAIN CALM” are some I’d like as well.
I think my combo would be ‘Ask for hugs’ and ‘Ask for photos’. I don’t even have a suit yet 😭😭
same!! Except I’m in the process of making four suits 😅
I think society could be a LOT better if "consent badges" were common. Like, you see a stranger that had a badge saying they want hugs and if you like giving hugs, give a hug! You can't just go around hugging people without asking and asking if you can hug someone comes off weird.
It would be cool
I think it would help many people who are starved of touch
Not knocking the badges at all, but I think it'd also be possible to build a society where offering hugs isn't read as weird to begin with.
Some are too anxious to ask but would love to interact positively with others which also helpz

The furry community is so kind.
"Don't interact - why go?"
Oh, I didn't know shy people aren't allowed to leave their house!
I’ll probably have one that says something like “Stoic and reserved, but Pleasant and friendly” or something like that “please ask before hug”

It would probably even be a good idea for some people to just take a blank sign or so, to write custom additions you might want others to know in the moment that you maybe can't foresee upfront

I need a "Don't talk to me" (or more exactly a "Ne venez pas me parler" cuz I'm French") for. Like. In the damn street.
I need the "awkward but friendly" badge. As someone whos pretty social-yet a wall-flower, it would be nice to have more people to talk to me
Hugs aren't on the daily at fur cons. They're on the minutely. lol
I think conventions with a lot of cosplayers should adopt the badge idea as well. It'd save a lot of cosplayers from getting unwanted hugs or photos

I love consent badges like this, visual indicators like this would take the stress off of knowing how to verbally communicate my boundaries (I am terrible at being upfront about my comfort level LOL)
based comment + based pfp = based person
you are based :)
Thanks. :(
No hate, we usually love your content. but yeah. tldr these are more widespread and it's definitely pre-dated the 3dprinting movement.
I think the only worry here is about art theft, and not the badges themselves. At least that's how the video came across to me. So, hopefully you won't have to worry too much! :D
He was worried about art theft specifically done by scummy corporations lmao he never claimed they "owned the idea"
"someone who goes by uhhh Hank Green"
these badges are genius
A friend gave me the purple 'hug gently' badge at a convention that i adore, and have kept safe since being given it as i have extreme pain in my right shoulder due to injury. These badges are a wonderful thing
