Thanks for all the feedback. I want to jump in and point out that this video isn't a criticism of Kanye or his newfound faith. I hope and pray he is truly on a journey that will culminate in the beatific vision. Watching Kanye's video and "service" inspired a deeper reflection on culture, for me, that I wanted to share. Whatever I'm critical of in this video, it is pop culture and not necessarily Kanye or his faith except in so far as he, as well as we in the Church, have tried to use pop culture, which is antithetical to Christian culture, to perpetuate the Gospel.

Promoting of Corporate Christianity. Commercial Christianity. New World Order-One World Order religion-political system. That's all that I see here. Even the host here has a corporate logo for his name.
Look at the concert footage shown... The crowd is put into a hypnotic trace, waving their arms like passive zombies. And giving this Kanye now celebrity heaps of praise and credit. Blinded by high tech stage shows.
How did the Witch get Cinderella to eat the poison? It was too easy, she just hid the poison in a pretty, shiny, sweet apple.

A good first step on your journey! He is God your loving Father. You will need to humbly repent of every sin of your life and become BAPTIZED with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You must continually die to yourself and let Christ live in you. Pray daily and read Gods Word. If you fall into sin, repent and confess, trusting always in God's mercy. Sin no more; he is calling you to holiness.
I hope your journey leads you to the Catholic Church. Catholicism is the fullness of the Christian faith and offers the grace of the seven sacraments, most importantly the Holy Eucharist!!

As a Catholic, I have come to believe that the only way forward is to go backwards, i.e. go back to how Catholicism was practiced before all of the modernist and progressive practices were incorporated into the Church. I would add a caveat to this that Catholics become will versed in both scripture and apologetics. Knowledge is very powerful, and if used properly, it can be used in a charitable way to help those who are lost in their ignorance of the truth. Logos is rising!!!

Because what was before IS the Catholic Church and the Modernist sect of the Novus Ordo is not. The religion that was born from Vatican II was and is just another non-Catholic sect not unlike Anglicanism, or any other pseudo-Christian cult.

    • @jag6138
      @jag6138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Roman Catholicism contaminated the true gospel. It brought in paganism, such as exalting Mary to divine status and praying to the dead for intercession when scripture clearly teaches that there is one mediator who is Jesus Christ.
'For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;' 1 Tim 2:5
The Catholic Church hold man's traditions above scripture and is the reason they forbid Bibles from being in the hands of the people and burnt bibles as well as shedding the blood of millions whom refused to renounce that Salvation was by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Your Are so right our Catholic Church has fallen in this pit called LETS BE MODERN and this is like saying “the church needs to change because we live in a modern world “ but if you think about it why did the Catholic Church change what it has thought for thousands and thousands of years ? Why did need to change the mass ? The Gregorian chants ? The use of vails and long skirts for women ? And the no longer use if Latin ? Why? Was the Holy Spirit incorrect all the past Consuls before Vatican two if god said heaven and earth shall pass but my words shall not pass . The Catholic Church is in a great illness . Let’s take a step back from Vatican two and we will see the great errors that our church leaders have done during Vatican two like praying to other gods ( Pacha Mama and praying with Muslims ) our church is in a state of war against god there is no respect for God anymore and more respect to Men

    This reflects a very
weak understanding of Kanye West. Whatever he may be, Kanye is not shallow.
His album uses a 5-1-5 format. The first 5 songs represent the struggles with conversion, ego, and frustration with critics. The middle song is the pivot mark, and the last 5 songs represent repentance, conversion and service to God. With that in mind, Kanye purposely used a recasted version of Carl Offs’ lamentation to express his own lamentation.
Essentially, he is using it to open his first 5 songs of his act.
Knowing this, it makes perfect sense that he would use this melody to open his concert.
You make lots of solid points about modern pop culture, but you completely miss the fact that Kanye is different.

    • @virtus4462
      @virtus4462 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Still feels shallow to me. In comparison, let's say for exemple, to the lot more profound traditional songs present in the liturgy of Latin Mass:
      th-cam.com/video/nUOKmh5Ac4s/w-d-xo.html
      .
      Not that it's bad you know, but it's just ... not in the same level. It's S H A L L O W.

I think that the biggest point for me was not that it is pop culture, but that it is a figure with this large of a voice in culture speaking out against the things he has thus far been willing to tackle. Abortion...check....morality and the lack thereof... check, his failings and turning to Christ for the only solution worth having...double check. I agree if people are looking to him or anything like this for complete spiritual culture it will be far lacking, but that is not what I have observed. I have seen Christians of all backgrounds just breath a sigh of relief that there was a cultural respite on a large scale of someone being willing to take a start in taking a stand against the Satanic world. I feel a kinship to Kanye as a hopeful spiritual brother the same way I feel it toward you when I listen to you, I am starving for people who have faith, and I will continue to pray for more people to find it and take it where I can find it. I’m not suggesting for a moment that it should be played within churches but (and this is a very serious question that I would love your thoughts on), if Kanye’s profession of faith and his creation of music to announce and give effect to that faith is just pop culture and not relevant, then what is? I mean, what are you proposing here? Should Catholics just chill back and say they’re content with 1950s hymns and ignore modern professions of faith through music? Because if a song hits someone in the heart and professes that Jesus is Lord, isn’t that a good thing?

I wouldn’t suggest we dispose of them but what about outside the tradition of the mass? I think that we do have our own cultural music that for centuries was sung at our Masses and that is Gregorian chant. It is beautiful and easy to sing with a little practice. We attend a Latin Mass that has Gregorian chant sung by a 20ish young man that is solemn and worshipful. I'm in my 70s and as a teen sang in a church choir that sung Gregorian chant, but at the time didn't realize that's what it was! Now when he sings the Gloria, Credo, etc. I can almost sing along with him. This may be one thing he doesn't get. I also wonder if after his first flush of conversion, if he'll stay with it as the pop culture can be so deceiving.

Bringing an album to the public eye with the title "Jesus is King" is undoubtedly a power move by the Holy Spirit. Regardless of its content, Jesus is King has shaken up old and current Christians. It brings Jesus into people's lives that perhaps haven't felt his comforting grave before. The truth finds it's way out through the shadows, and in this case it's an enormous spotlight. This is something to be celebrated.

Kanye West seems to be on fire with the Holy Spirit. However, to safely fan the flames and to ensure the fire doesn't go out a fireplace is needed. Our 'fireplace' is the Catholic Church, the source of the fullness of the Truth with the Sacraments providing Sanctifying Graces.. I pray that Kanye is called into the Catholic Faith.

The challenge is capturing the next generation. I say this as a non Catholic but it’s the same dilemma. Churches are using contemporary music to draw people in. It can be used as a great tool but it’s a mistake to think of it as a one size fits all. Many of the elderly are not used to this type of music nor is everyone spiritually quenched. My soul is far more stirred by listening to Byzantine chants than by listening to Hillsong. I think there has to be room for both, truth can be communicated via several mechanisms

This is an editorial that should run on the front page of every newspaper/newsource in America. Imagine the impact this would have with millenials as a source of discussion on the root causes of the current destruction of world cultures. Really well done........

If there is one thing I think my parents gave me, it was a Christian culture. Every Sunday we would go to Mass and we all would sing. They even sang in the choir for Midnight Mass at our church. They sang well, and they taught me to sing well and to love singing. They loved it.
They also loved the St. Louis Jesuits and John Michael Talbot and other singers of the post-Vatican II era. My parents taught me to love Jesus and the Church through them. It is a culture for me, not a third-rate pop sensation. I do express my joy and my sorrows through their music, as do many other Catholics the world over. Not just ones who go to church Easter and Sunday, weekly attendees.
There is a flip side to what Mr. Holdsworth has said. People consume music as naturally as they create it. Whatever you listen to becomes the culture you are inculturated into. The St. Louis Jesuits and the Dameans and other singers from the post-conciliar period created a culture of which I am a part. It will be sad to see it die in the face of growing regressivism among my fellow Catholics. But my culture is not so important to me as my religion - my relationship to God, through whatever expressions I use.
I feel for the Welshman whose parents spoke Welsh to him as a child, but who only thinks it in his heart while he teaches his children English.

Yes. This is a beautiful and on-point synopsis on what is happening in our culture. The confusion and ignorance it’s drowning itself in due to a lack of having God as the focus, yet still grasping for love and acceptance, when God already does love and accept us, which is why he gave us rules to live by and traditions to follow, so through Him we could come together by loving one another.

Definitely not a Catholic, but I'm always encouraged when I find Catholics with whom I can agree on a great many ideas. I realize that within the greater umbrella of "Catholicism", there are a vast number of paradigms. I guess I just can't understand how anyone could hold to doctrines like apostolic succession and several others that are expounded within the dogma. None-the-less, I'm always down to love Jesus with others (whether or not they agree with me on everything)....to love Him via praise music, or via intellectual inquiry, or via service to His other creatures. I won't criticize Kanye because often our zeal and first steps are spiritually immature, or a lot about self. Rare is the Christian who goes from world to Saint immediately. That being said, I ultimately agree with you. It is sad that so many Catholics are ready to leave sacred tradition and Catholic identity for "relevance." I am turning to Catholicsm partly because I am sick of modern relativism and seek Truth in sacred tradition. We humans like to be part of the "in crowd" and compromise to get there. The Bible says we are a peculiar people. I wish Kanye well and pray that he grows deeply in the Faith.

This is not a service this is a show and since Christianity has become so frowned on for so long people have forgotten about it, it's a very good career move in the entertainment industry, he is leading the pack. Resurrect the old religion with old music and new lyrics and look at the crowd you can pull in. The term 'wolf in sheep's clothing' springs to mind.
All in white clothing reminds me of another musician setting up a cult to much enthusiasm from his mindless followers (Jared Leto, don't know much other than some very strange footage I saw on SM).
Instant conversions are rarely sincere, especially not at crowd level unless we are talking about a cult and people who are predisposed to fall into cults.
It costs a lot of money to set up those concerts and he certainly knows about marketing and playing to the crowd. New-found religion can be very profitable as the large venues and performances at mega churches and cults over time have shown.

God will use whoever He chooses to spread the Gospel and if the Pope doesn’t want to evangelize and is ok with idol worship than God will bring people to His Son in His own way. Kanye seems to be having a true conversion and is doing more to bring people to Our Lord Jesus Christ than our Pope. God uses the foolish to confound the wise. Kanye has people professing Jesus is King. His lyrics use sound doctrine. He does have a bible believing pastor at his Sunday service. Check out LA and Detroit sermons. Jesus is our first priority. Let God’s Holy Will Be done. Pray the Catholic Church will be there as this generation turns to Christ and will eventually find the fullness of faith. Praise the Name above all names Jesus Christ.

I agree with most of what you said in this video. The main hypothesis does not seem to be clear. It seems like the video should be titled, “Even Christian pop culture should not be considered culture.” I am a big fan of Kanye’s new album, and I support any art that praises God truthfully, beautifully, and well. It’s a great point about not letting pop culture be a substitute for true culture. What amount of affection and time to even the best of pop culture is proper?

  • @matthewbateman6487

I have been looking for an informed appraisal of this new album. I am glad that, since West has the freedom and money to express anything, he would choose to express this instead of materialism/consumerism. All the same, like smartphones and social media, I am reluctant to buy into too quickly, if for no other reason than that so many people have bought it wholesale, without pausing to see if they should, or what the consequences will be. A tree is known by its fruit.. I am no rejecting it at all. I just want to see what the fruit of it will be.
Brian here opens by saying how exciting an genuine and moving West's new album is... And then he spends the whole rest of the video exposing our broken pop-anti-culture. I agree... So the new album is good..... but it's also bad?

    • @undolf4097
      @undolf4097 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Matthew Bateman it is bad because Brian outlines how it misused the Lamentation piece.
But it’s good in how it’s a sort of cry for help. Kanye and everyone consuming his media knows something better is out there, something beyond our imaginations. The pop music is a limitation on that, an obstacle bought from capitalists.
What we should take from Kanye is an understanding that God is still there and our cultures can be reclaimed. We need only cease to be consumerists. The culture will be restored naturally if we only keep ourselves from being sold an artificial culture.

Dear Brian, I'm afraid, this time I can't agree to your video as much as usually. My mother toung is German (from Austria). Yes, in past centuries our culture here contributed a lot to church music. Eg. Mozart's or Haydn's masses. Or the Christmas carol Stille Nacht = Silent Night among others. But since the 20th century, there came the gospels, Taizé chants, phantastic church songs, which combine music and deep lyrics, resulting in musical prayer and adoration and praise. Recently, many songs of groups like Hillong outperform profane pop by far! So, am I more optimistic than you in this aspect or didn't I get your point correctly? (But I do admit hating 'Jingle Bells', which will contaminate Austria's warehouses like every year soon.) :-)

My personal opinion is that in order to have a "shared experience" we need to rediscover what it means to be Catholics and Christians. It seems to me that many people do not know, or have fallen asleep to what it means, and there are all kinds of factions going in different directions. We need to remember that we are the 72 that Christ set forth to spread his message, and isn't that exciting, risky, edgy, countercultural and dangerous? It was for them, surely, and it is for us, just in a different way. I think our expressions of what it means to be a Christian and have Christ as our Savior will grow out of our redefinition of who we are, but we are struggling to find ourselves in these times.

This was pretty interesting. But at 9:27 you say "you can't have a plurality of culture and expect that some sort of singular culture will emerge out of that" but that is precisely what American culture is. We are the melting pot and the reason we are is specifically for the purpose of engineering a cultural container that will hold all of the world's people under one roof. This country was designed that way from the very beginning, on purpose. There has never been any other way in this country. What you need to understand is that this is Freemason culture, and the melting pot is a specific part of it. th-cam.com/video/-31Zf2297ZI/w-d-xo.html

We're not establishing a firm foundation, so when they grow up and move off of their parent's foundation, their's crumbles because it's built on sand.

Unmanly, "nice people" have dominated Catholic hymn writing for decades. Two days ago, I attended a daily Mass that was part of the parishes school celebration, but the result was an ear grating, minor key experience of songs chosen for maximum dippiness that maybe only 40 some badly lead and practiced kids sang. Thank God, the actual liturgy was orthodox and the homily relevant

This is one of the finest videos I've ever seen on U-Tube.
I am not Christian, no 'motivation' there.
It is I think an overly intellectualized expression of culture that plagues us.
Trying to disentangle everything social from a 'culture' is not possible. The narrator is right.
Culture cannot be created or sustained intellectually.
And human beings need it, they need it because they ARE human.
A culture is a very basic human need. It is not a fearful vulnerability. I think some folks may construe a percieved perceived vulnerability as some lack of control; and for people - there is nothing worse than that.
'Culture' is a fundamental emotional cohesion that cannot be 'reasoned' away.
And for me, a faith means really just this, it need not be an abrogation of any kind. It's not intellectual suicide. It's just a human need. Some people maybe are truly afraid to be human.
Why is there then this adversarial relationship with our minds, and being a human being ?
Cuture is an emotional human expression not an intellectual one.
Pitting our humanness against our our minds will always be a loss - it's been nothing but frustration so far.
Small wonder then why a 'free economy' would go after it with such gusto,
it's really just a big pile of money sitting right there.
Best vid I seen in ages.
    Wonderful thank you.

Hmmm 🤔 so much here. Hope this makes sense... Id like to be part of a catholic artist culture. If anyone knows where to find one I’d be grateful... Making media/entertainment/art that honors God and honors women, shows true wholesome romance, messing up and starting again, adulting etc. There’s really so much that could be explored. I think we could use more of those kinds of songs, movies, short stories, novels etc... I don’t think enough of Catholic Christian culture is shown by any means. I think that makes people doubt it. But also the other side is actually having it in the world living and breathing and growing. Mary pray for us. Jesus guide us.
