    It depends on what spirit was behind the music when it was made. There was a time in my life when I was into Scandinavian paganism(now fully surrendered to Jesus, repentant and redeemed) and created instrumental music in the spirit of that. Guess what? Even though there are no words to the songs, it still has a spirit of paganism behind it and has since been discarded. It was peaceful, beautiful, serene music that anyone would think would be okay to have playing in the background for ambiance. But there was a spirit behind it that was not of God and that makes it unacceptable to listen to as a Christian. So, if this contemporary music was created with the sole purpose to praise and glorify God, I think it's okay. If they praise the name of Jesus in the song and it is a positive, uplifting song I think it's okay. If it is very vague, doesn't mention Jesus's name and focuses on man rather than God, it probably was written in the spirit of appealing to the masses to make a lot of money. Discern the spirits in all things.

    It's funny though, a lot of the Psalms are sad, angry, or mournful. Imagine singing Psalm 137 "By the Rivers of Babylon" or Psalm 129 "Many a time they have afflicted me" to happy music... you're right. It doesn't fit. I believe in singing the Word of God from the Bible We're aren't always "happy-pappy" Praise-the-Lord. God is grieved, and happy, and even Jesus wept... I love minor keys especially and how they can be joyous and sad at the same time.

    there's a lot of people here who need to humble themselves and take Michael Pearl's answer with a grain of salt. just because your music was listed in this video doesn't mean you have to stop listening to it but the correct response would be to take a step back from your music, consider what Mr Pearl said and take any concerns before the Lord.
    I listen to Christian Rap and was not happy to hear this answer but if simply TRYING other types of music aka Hymns makes me more Christ like or more connected to God's Spirit then so be it. do not be stuck in your ways but be willing to seek God and conform to His will.
    I have sang hymns and have sang CCM, imo hymns BLOW ccm away. ccm seems to rely more on mans ability to move a crowd rather than the Holy Spirit. I'm 27 btw and only a Bible believing Christian since 2017. and not to mention the shallowness of the lyrics in ccm, 7 words 11 times with repetitive melodies and a constant build up is hypnotism.

      Can confirm, Christian Hymns are the most peaceful and beautiful music I have ever encountered in my whole life, and I’m thankful to have found them.

    Bottom line, if there's a question mark over ANYTHING, then leave it alone.
    As an x metal head, I can honestly say that if the Lord were to come and visit me, I wouldn't play "christian" heavy metal.

    Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
    I also wouldn't take him to a "worship" concert, where the only thing the "worship" musicians worship is themselves.

    The last part of the video sums it up. You have certain emotions attached to music. How have people defined the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's? All with music. Mr. Pearl grew up on hymns, got saved on hymns. Todays new believers maybe have never heard a hymn or understand the beauty of them. But if what christian music they do listen to is uplifting and leads to beautiful worship, then so be it.

    His presentation was pretty good until he got to the point about not using minor keys in worship. Part of our worship should focus on what Christ suffered for us on the cross, not to mention some of the psalms such as the great penitential Psalm 51. In these cases the most appropriate and fitting music is in minor keys, such as "O Sacred Head Now Wounded." And if you really want to sing some old-time music, the Sacred Harp is filled with tunes in minor keys.

      Agreed! I think minor chords do have their rightful place! But I think they might not be heard in heaven!

    If the music is against God then it is definitely bad! Music is a gift from God! It can be bad too if the lyrics are evil! So listen to a good music with good lyrics that motivates you!

    Ive never been one for any kind of church music whether its hard rock sounding or an organ with a choir, but the closest i feel of the spirit is when i hear christian music in a softer tone. I like stuff like "in the sweet by and by" far more than contemporary church music with lead guitar solos. We have to remember we're in the Lord's house at church. Not at a rock concert type of atmosphere. There should be reverence and humbleness towards the Lord. Just my opinions.

    I been watching your videos,and praying that I will find my way to the Lord.So I have ask a friend of mine to come watch with me .He seem to have different options than you do,but I find myself believing in what you have to say.This makes it hard to know who is right. So I have to believe that the Lord is going to know what is true in my on Heart.

    Peace to all. I actually enjoy a lot of Michael's teaching. As a trained musician, I would give a lot of this message over to a lack of knowledge and supposition based on some faith in science, but not biblical. I have heard other teaching that he referred to our time here as possibility millions of years, which leads me to believe he has been deceived by the world on certain issues. I believe he is very sincere and I actually hold him up as a valued teacher. I do beg him to study biblical creationism, and not accept the mainstream as truth. Check out answers in genesis Michael. You will gather so many more true believers. I do love you and your videos. David

    Children are listening to rap music and are hardly gang members. I’m certain that there is a disconnect between the music and the lyrics just as there is a disconnect b/w violent movies and other media. They see it as entertainment and “gangster” rap has been glamorized. I can only pray that these kids and adults for that matter will find Jesus. It has been a struggle for me as a Christian to let go of secular music as it has been a method to manage my emotions. At least it’s how I rationalize it. It’s something that requires repentance but I am afraid that God will stop listening because I keep going back to it after periods of time.

    I think Mr. Pearl is a good Bible teacher, but I agree with all the other comments here, (EXCEPT Editrix92). The BIBLE wasn't taught here, and 90% of it was based on opinion and feeling. I agree that some songs (I don't say this about a whole music genre) just give a feeling of anger, hate or wickedness. I can handle some Christian music that is "hard rock," yet some songs I can't stand because they are just screaming, and some Christian rap songs are good, but some I don't feel glorify God.

    Interesting. I think if we are going to go with this idea, then we have to eradicate a lot of the hymns, because many of the arrangements were taken from old bar songs...

    I am a truck driver was secular music was the only thing(mostly classic rock) that would motivate me and keep me pumped. I used to go to karaoke at my favorite hole in wall bar and sing my best out. And I'd find Christian music to be repulsive. Now since a few months ago this year, it's the complete opposite as well as a handful of other things that the holy spirit changed in me and I never even desire to listen to any of my favorite secular songs. And they really are demonic because you can be totally reborn totally repented, totally transformed into a new spirit in your body and do everything according to the laws of the old and new testament, you can be going for a long stretch of years be devoted to God's ministries in church and around the world, and all it takes is one song, or one hit on that cigarette/cigar, one gulp of that alcoholic drink, that one swallow of a pill or hit of a drug, or one good long glance at a nude person, and all those things you did for God prior to that moment are up and gone in smoke. Then you have to fight your flesh and against the darkness to not get totally sucked into bondage again. You must repent once again but that's easier said than done Because when you backside its 7x harder to come back to God. So it's better to avoid even flirting with the thought of going back to an old favorite song and just cold turkey throwing away all that music and lifestyle that is attached to it. You are what you eat, you are what you listen to to, you are who you fellowship with.

    One of the rare times i am in disagreement. Now they are some so called Christian music that is not of God. However they are alot of good contemporary Christian music that is inspired by God. We live in different times than when alot of the old hyms was written. To appeal and touch this younger generation the music has to change with the culture. God knows this so that inspiration also makes adjustments. But it all comes down to how each individual perceives a song. We all are different and have different perceptions. It is the same with Gods word which is why as Apostle Paul wrote the word of God is is written in mystery. Therefore each individual perceives the message in their own way.

    In the OT God established the elements to used in his worship. In Lev 10:1 Nadab and Abihu were slain for bringing strange fire before the LORD God. The fire God required was in the tabernacle but they foolishly brought fire from without into the presence of God. As with the tabernacle all needed for true worship already resides in the Church and bringing in strange fire (rap, metal, etc) is the equivalent of Nadab and Abihu's sin. Everything God's people adapted from the heathen hurt them.

    Oh dear I was going to leave this one alone because I'm starting to get too into videos like this. Basically I'm pretty sure the Bible had better things to do that your priorities then to talk about weather contemporary music was acceptable. Second and I'm not trying to be mean so I will say this as nicely as possible everyone knows at a very young age that people have voice deflections and that comes through also in song. Also clearly music triggers emotion. The only thing that I will say mean is that I was like okay are we going to get to the point. And then I wish we hadn't so this man really wants to say what he said and I'm not going to repeat it because it's just completely unacceptable what he did about blues music and the people that is associated to period Blues paved the way for many genres. Just the way that he was speaking about people like drunk passed out like just if you listen to this music like you're sleeping around like how narrow-minded are you? That's not okay to say and that's not what God would want you to do I can tell you that second of all I don't know why some of you Christians that are spewing this message keep bringing in Jewish folks but maybe you could take a cue from their humble nature and stop bragging about things that are not important. You know what's more important is being a good human being and living in God's light

    frist off I like most of your videos. when I listen to Christian music its not because I use science,,its because it moves me to worship or uplifts me. and I didn't see any thing from the Bible accept about the trumpet.there are a lot more the Bible has to say about music. there are songs being song in churches that are depressing.music affect speople in different ways.i believe that Christians should only listen to Christian music and not secular , i find there are a lot of Christians that listen to country or other music and yet condemn contemporary Christian.

    You obviously have not listened to Lecrae or Trip Lee. They produce hip-hop music that glorifies God and praises Him. It is certainly not the music of violence or rape.

    I'm sorry, but you provided no scriptural evidence for your claims. Being a musician myself, and also a born again Christian who once played in a death metal band when I was lost in the world of sin. I can attest, that I have formidable knowledge on music theory and music history. Harps and lyres existed around the same time as trumpets, albeit, maybe they came into play a little later than the trumpet, but they also had solid minor brass horns as well, and to say the didn't use them in song to worship without evidence, is like saying you know what size sandals Paul wore. You just can't say it's a fact when you don't really know. Truth is, music is nothing more than vibration. Yes, I do agree that music can alter the human mind, brain waves, and overall mood, but that does not make the minor key demonic. God created all music equally, and it is a gift to us from him. I know many Christian rap artists, metal bands, and even reggaeton (Spanish rap). And I've seen countless people come to christ. Even if these artist become sellouts, their purpose was to bring the gospel to those who need it and in some cases, they achieved that goal.

    How can you be so ignorant as to define "good" music, or relate certain types of music with different types of lifestyles? What scripture are you getting this from? Where in the Bible does it define good or evil styles of music? Keep your personal music preferences out of your Bible teaching or you will quickly run into twisting the Bible to fit your own views on things. You will be judged for that, Friend.

    It's just a shame Mr. Pearl limits himself and his ministry with such narrow-mindedness that is legalistic, and yet he teaches that tithing is a sin because it is part of the law.

    what they heck. the question should be whether playing music is allowed in worship. otherwise who really cares. this guy does not even use that big book he set down and never picked up again. i am sure that we should be careful what the words are being sung to us, and make sure that it is a godly message from a godly person.

    Suggesting that the Bible would have anything to say about Contemporary Christian music is the same as asking what did Shakespeare think about the movie Avatar. The Bible has nothing to say about contemporary memes because it was written almost 2 Millennia ago.

    You are obviously puffed up and you only wrote a few lines! All of the arguments presented here against this message are opinion just as much as the message itself. Try being consistent. Do you all believe it is wrong to smoke? Wrong to have sex with children? Wrong to marry your cousin or half brother? None of these things is spoken against is scripture and yet 95% or so of Christians agree they are wrong. Why? Because God has given us wisdom. Try listening to wisdom.
