      I do agree with that, Bragging looks diffrent. What you show is not just "I made 10 billion in 5 yrs" It shows the "Dark Side" aswell. Good Job on the Video love it and hope ya will have a bit more luck with market prices towards your Benifit :D

    In 1964 my dad bought 160 acres for 16,000. People thought he was a fool for paying that much. The farm next door(about the same acreage) just sold for 9000/ac. In the future you will only regret that you couldn't buy more. Good luck,farming is a very rewarding way of life.

    • @charliehargrave7458
      @charliehargrave7458 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sixty five years ago farm land was selling for 200 to 300 a acre, today it is worth 7 to 10 thousand a acre. For 65 years you fight the weather, grain embargos, stupid Washington politics and you pay double the rate for social security taxes for being self employed and you have to be paid government payments to stay in business. If farming produced a good living there would be more than 3 percent left.

I hope maybe one day for my TH-cam channel to make a little extra money, but you sharing your numbers really helps give an idea of what to realistically expect. That’s farming mate. It’s hard to start up from scratch but you’re going at it the right way by helping your brother so he can help you. Also it’s tough making money off of farming the same year you buy land but because you bought it you still have it next year to have another go at it. You can turn numbers any way you want on paper to make it look either positive or negative. I like how you’ve looked at it and I’d do it the same way. Keep it up. I found your channel not long ago but I binged your videos and really enjoyed them. I look forward to watching the next one 👍🏻

    Great job Spencer! I started farming for the first time in 2008 and did about the same as you. As you said, there are many ways to look at it but at the end of the year I didn’t have any extra money in my pocket. After that it took off pretty rapidly and exceeded my wildest expectations. It was the best thing that I ever did for myself and my family.
    No matter what happens I’m sure that you will look back at it in ten years and be glad that you did it.
    BTW, where I live the most profitable ground you farm is the ground you rent. It’s very difficult to find but when you do it will be much cheaper than taxes and interest.

    My Grandpop moved to the farm in 1917 as a tenant farmer. He bought the farm, lock,stock and barrel in 1936. After the war my Uncle moved off the farm and my Dad and Grandpop farmed about 450 acres. In the ‘60s , after I was born Dad took out an operating loan for $100,000. 00 to $150,00.00. We were potatoes and grain.

    It absolutely blows my mind at what u Americans pay to buy or rent land. In Central Canada, right now, half decent farm land sells for 3 to 4000 per acre and renting is anywhere from 50 to 120 per acre. And that's in Canadian dollars. So even less for u. Your losses would not even b there and u may have even been in the black money wise. Renting our land would have only cost u 5000 cad or more like 3750 usd. That is such a huge diffrence. It's so amazing to me how farms still exist in the states with the amount of losses farmers face from year to year. Just shows its a labour of love and not just a job but a lifestyle. Well done and hopefully it only goes up from this point on. Good luck

    As someone who just started farming this past year, albeit I'm taking over for an extended family member, this video really illustrates well the struggle to own land for new farmers. Spencer here got a very good deal on land price, is financed at a reasonable rate, and at least historically got a fair price for his grain(not great for the past couple years but pretty good for the past decade) yet still lost money.
    Land prices are just so high that its really easy to run years of negative cash flow unless you were able to buy the land with mostly or all cash. All of which favors either corporate or older farmers immensely.

      Yeah pretty much summed it up. I knew this would be the case going into it and planned accordingly. There are better investment out there for sure. Well see how it plays out. Thanks for comment!

    I look forward to see what drainage/tiling/dirt work to eliminate the low areas along the creek and other items to prep the land for next years crop.

    I was trying to think of when you'd be able to actually profit from farming, considering how expensive it turns out to be, but then I remembered that a lot of your expenses came from actually buying the land, which means that this year you were basically trying to get 0 to start profiting in the next year etc.
    Also, considering you should be able to profit in the future, you should be progressively doing better and better, because it will allow you to get your own equipment, eliminating cost of driving or towing combines and stuff back and forth
    So it is certainly a journey that's not for everyone, but it IS possible
