    I like how a actual flaw in the c64 hardware actually made it possible to add a fourth pcm voice :)

      Ever since I heard about the SID is always three generators + sample means 4 channels

    • @d_vibe-swe
      @d_vibe-swe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Kamil Tomasz INSIAK No. Technically it has three DCOs. The fourth pcm channel is made from a glitch. Here's from Wikipedia:
      "Due to imperfect manufacturing technologies of the time and poor separation between the analog and digital parts of the chip, the 6581's output (before the amplifier stage) was always slightly biased from the zero level. By adjusting the amplifier's gain through the main 4-bit volume register, this bias could be modulated as PCM, resulting in a "virtual" fourth channel allowing 4-bit digital sample playback."
      It's because the output has dc offset (the supposed zero is not at zero) it can be modulated. Afaik this is only possible on the 6581, not on the newer 8580. It's possible to play samples on that one too, but I think it needs to use the three DCOs for it then. :)

      +VitinhoCarneiro I don't know. Mahoney is in his own league when it comes to the sid chip :) .. I'm no programmer, but I guess it'll need plenty of memory and cpu (for being the c64 that is ;)) for doing such thing, which won't be suitable for demos and games. Anyone knows if his technique works on all sid revisions?

      You make one of the oscillators to be square and just stay at logical 1 from what I understand. Then you use the usual trick. Or maybe then you use the ADSR. IDK I'm not a programmer ;-)

    Wow, I haven't heard this in a while! I *loved* this tune back when I was a kid, I'd fire up the game just to listen to this song over and over again; eventually someone stuck it in a demo which you could leave on this song on infinite loop - would play it for hours!

    This is definitely one of the more visually entertaining entries so far.

    One of the best songs from Hülsbeck. The CD release of "To be on top" is very old by now, and most people who are interested in this music must have heard of it. If not, however, it has a great version of this very song, so check it out!

    What makes it so that the wave appears to be centered in the oscilloscope window, no matter the pitch of the wave?

    • @dertrueforce110
      @dertrueforce110 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's called triggering. A real digital 'scope(this is a simulation) records what it sees on the probes, and when the signal goes past the trigger point, the scope grabs a bit more, and displays it, usually zoomed in so you can pan back and forth.
      I you can generally set the scope to trigger when the signal either rises or falls past the trigger point; on the rising or falling edge, as it's called. I don't think I've seen a scope that can be set to trigger on both edges, probably because that would likely make it harder to read. I've seen this switch edges, which is why I even bring it up.

    how did they get a 4th channel?

    • @GregDaniel78
      @GregDaniel78 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short version: Sending bytes of data to the volume register which, due to a 'flaw' in the SID chip, produced a sort of click. In effect 4bit samples separate to the 3 main channels could be used.

      Yes, To Be On Top is a game where you play a musician who has to build up a career. You actually 'compose' songs during the game.

    • @afrosheenix
      @afrosheenix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any panning you perceived from the C64 is a result of phasing. Two mono speakers arranged in stereo playing a phased sound trick you into hearing movement.
