The reason why the Dome of the Rock was probably fairly empty when you went was because you entered as a non-Muslim during a specific time which doesn't tend to coincide with actual Muslim prayer times (according to the sun). When I went to the Dome of the Rock and Masjid-ul Aqsa, it was FILLED with people. You can pray at the Dome of the Rock, and the people gathered to pray went all the way outside the doors.
Well that was my experience when I went in 2017.

The Temples were not located over the rock. Modifications to the Herodian-era floor of the plaza have all but hidden the correct location. It was rediscovered a few years ago when the wells started refilling, causing some tiles to be pulled up. The Sanctum Sanctorum is under one of the gazebo-like structures.

The earliest mosques do indeed look a lot like churches. For example take a look at the Ummayad Mosque of Damascus. (Muslims believe Jesus will descend from sky onto the mosque's eastern minaret-known as the "Minaret of Jesus")
Also, here is little something I once heard an Imam say regarding the "temple mount". (I'm paraphrasing from vague memory)

Chief christian priest took him to the main church, and invited him to offer his prayers, but he declined saying'if i pray here, future Muslims will convert it into a mosque' and asked to be taken to the Solomon's temple. I personally believe microbial life is product of or at least the effect of interdimensional life...which many traditions and religious texts do mention. The solar system as well as a vast cosmos is common theme too (unless you're a fundamentalist Christian/flat earther) so not sure where you got that idea...

Being raised in muslim family, I've never been told creation was happened in here.
Even they are disagreeing on who was almost sacrificed. Judaism (and Christianity to some extent) believe that it was Sarah's son Isaac, while Islam believes that it was Hagar's son Ishmael.

@@y__h Christians believe in the God revealed in Judaism so they did not write their own history and instead use the exact same scriptures used in Judaism. In another video, RFB explains that Christians didn't see themselves as a separate religion but were looking to reform Judaism.

Al-Aqsa Mosqua IS NOT the Dome of the Rock!!!! It is a seperate masjid on the temple mount is where the night journey and prayer took place.

The whole thing surrounded by a wall is called the aqsa mosque, including the dome of the rock, AL-masjid al-qibli, and Al-musalla al-marouani

I heard that the ummiyad khalifa who built it was not in control of Hijaz, was in conflict with it's rulers and did not want people from the Levant (who were loyal to him and many were new converts to Islam, some from Christianity) to go to pilgrimage to Mecca and be influenced to turn against him by the rulers of Hijaz. So, he built this shrine to give them an alternative for their pilgrimage. This video has evidence to back up the assumption. Thank you. Great channel too.
The dome of the rock (haram al-shariif), has nothing to do with the Umayyads. It was first built in the reign of Umar ibn Khattab (the 2nd Khalif after Abubakar) after the conquest of Jerusalem. Umayyads and other rulers may have extended or rebuilt after earthquakes on various occasions.

Wow, fascinating video! I was curious, Mecca and The Dome of the rock both prohibit most non-muslims from entering (as you've said in this video). Is this similarly seen in Judaism, and why is this not the case in Christianity (as far as I'm aware)?
Entrance to the inner court of the Jewish temples was only permitted to Jews who had gone through ritual purification. If I'm not mistaken, the outer court was open to all, but maybe only Jews whether pure or not. There were a few rings, each getting more restrictive - up to the holy of holies as mentioned in the video.
In current day Jewish holy sites and synagogues there are no restrictions on access, and non-Jews can even potentially observe during prayer services.
Well, a lot of churches, particularly Catholic churches Orthodox churches, and some Lutheran Churches don't allow unbelievers to take part in communion. That's the most similar thing Christianity has to not allowing non-believers to go to a certain place pr take part in activities. However, even that is not a universal thing, since most Protestant churches will allow anyone who comes into it take part in communion, though anyone who is an unbeliever probably won't get much out of it.
Christians have no need for ritual purity, since Christians believe that the presence and spirit of God is in the hearts of all Christian people, not confined and Christians believe that we are free in Christ to go anywhere we please.
After Jesus was crucified, there was a small earthquake and the shroud that covered the entrance to the Holy of Holies in the 2nd Temple was ripped in half, which is taken as a sign that that's no longer a "no-go zone," so to speak.

Just for clarification, in temple times there was a "Court of the Gentiles" on Temple Mount. A notice has been found, written in Greek, stating effectively do not pass this point on pain of death.

Back in those days there were no Christians and Muslims so the warning applied only to pagans.
It is, like almost everything, still debated among Jewish religious authority, but generally speaking - there is no limit on gentiles joining Jews in prayer, synagogues and, when it was active, the Great Temple. There are only three limitations:
Gentiles can't be counted towards the minimum of 10 Jews needed for "public prayer", they can't enter the inner circle of the temple, and they can't participate in the public reading of the Torah done on Saturdays (they can attend, but can't read out loud)
Anyone is allowed to go to the Wailing Wall (the holiest place for Jews) and the tomb of Abraham is split between Jews and Muslims.

Its just an embellished standard "Roman" mausoleum, there are dozens of these extant in both the Western and Eastern part of the former empire in different shapes and forms.
It's beautiful sacred and classic architecture and hope it will be preserved for future generations.

Reading these comments sure lets you know how many people are experts in ancient topography.
That theory makes no sense. If that was the case, why are there mikvahs and trails leading up to the mount? How do you explain the trumpeting stone found there? The Greek warnings to gentiles found there? Walls and stones by the Eastern Gate dating back to the first Temple Mount period? The beams of cedar from Lebanon dating back to first Temple Mount period? And much more archeological evidence.
I personally believe it was not at Dome of the Rock though, but just a bit lower by Al Aqsa.
If Hagia can be a mosque, Mount can also be a temple.

imu70 it’s a myth. Just like Abraham, Moses, Solomon and David we’re myth. Almost everything in the Torah are myth, with few exceptions such the event after the Babylonian Exile or the Judaic Kings just before Assyrian’s conquest.

Masjid al-Aqsa isn't a building, it is a site, like Masjid al- Haram.

If Roman didn't destroy Solomon Temple, we might see a Jewish Synagogue, Muslim Al Aqsa Mosque, and Christian Church in the Temple Mount all stand together symbolizing brotherhood of Abrahamic religion rather than fighting each other.
That's not possible.
If Romans never destroyed Solomon's House of Prayer or God didn't will it to be destroyed.
Muslims and Christians will be forbidden to enter its complex, because Jews consider it very holy. Even some jews will be prohibited on some sections of the Temple and only Pure Jews will be allowed to enter.
I visited the Dome back in 1981, as a non practicing Jew. That evening, upon returning to the home of my Jewish hosts, they threw me out. In my heart, I felt drawn to stand where the first and second temples stood. Jerusalem enflames the passions of everyone. The trick is to keep your head low and be ready to duck or run.

in judaism we aren't allowed to enter mosques and churches.
and also this being our holiest site and there were places that we were prohibited from going to which is why there are signs there saying that jews better off not entering.

It's amazing how everyone seems to glaze over a really important bit of history. The "Rock" which everyone keeps claiming as the 3rd holiest site for Islam.... well this site is the no. 1 holiest place in Judaism. Everyone speaks of the "Rock" yet you forget to mention that 4000 years ago (2600 years before there was a Mohamed or a religion called Islam) our forefather Abraham prepared his son Isaac for sacrifice on that rock and eventually made the covenant with God for circumcision of all Jewish males.... 2950 years ago (1550 years before there was a Mohamed or a religion called Islam) Solomon The Wise built the first Temple on the exact site.... in fact the Al-Aqsa Mosque only exists because the Israelites had previously prepared the site for building.....

How do they vet who is a muslim or not? Is it an honesty policy or is their a person at the door to quiz you on the quran?
There are two points. First walking up the tourist entrance, the Israeli guards ask you. Then again the Waqf guards at the door asked us again. Other than outward signs like a hijab or kippah, though, I suppose they can’t prove it.

I have read an article which points out the dome of the rock could be a Roman mausoleum because of the octagonal shape. Please remember mausoleum of Suleiman the Magnificent is based on dome of the rock. (also the mausoleum contains pieces of black stone from Kaaba, which is stone worship maybe?) It could be possible the dome of the rock was built on an existing mausoleum. However I couldn't find more study on this.
Not really clear on what it was but the Dome of the Rock preserves at its core some Roman building of Hadrian's Temple complex.

As for the stone of course no one denies the Jewish existence in the city so its normal to have this findings despite the fact of Israel history of making up stones to support their claims.... while they didn’t have to fake anything or make any effort in the mount of David!
Humanity as a unified wholeness is the temple which is why the temples have fallen into disrepair. An easy solution seems to be so apparent when all faith ideologies can be appreciated for their depth in meaning within the souls of the passerbys who listen with their hearts. A soul is saved within a composite of absolutions, encapsulated at its own willingness in time as it passes through the needle. I find love as commonality in the expressive art each of these structures breathes into its lungs. I wish more architects, artists, and designers would collaborate in storytelling for all of the cultures and races that make up humanity. Perhaps lending space in every country to share inspiration and appreciation. Every human is exquisite, imagine a world where you felt a sense of home and family anywhere.
