After watching this, I rectify, the transformer is only here to adapt the impedance and it doesn't protect the capsule from 48V because it is present on pins 2 and 3.
before i watch, mine literally broke in a day and the solder got detached from the top of the cap. i was so confused bc the fall wasn't even that high. edit seeing you disassemble this thing makes me wonder if i got a copy... which is weird cause the thing sounded pretty nice
I have a video on how to use a speaker as a mic but you will need a circuit to amplify that signal. Let me check out I could find something for you maybe.
I am not sure I think there is already a small foam filter in there. You could definitly add one inside the capsule as long as it's not making contact with the membrane of the mic itself, just to avoid changing the sound or even blocking it.
nice demonstration. Since there are so few parts that are not destroyed in repair ,,what do you actually do when you repair one,, and,,, does the cost of repair outweigh the replacement cost?
Hello there, I work as a tech in a big repair shop and since we have some deal with the manufacturer, it can be worth repairing, most of the time. I think you will save some buck only in the long run if you replace the capsule as it can be most expensive part of the SM57.
Ahah thanks! That orange case shown in this video is pretty cheap but I never had problem with them since I don't use them intensely. I have another set for more heavy duty work.
www.amazon.ca/Screwdriver-Precision-Electronic-Appliances-Occus/dp/B07Z7VMVZ8 I won't make any money out of this link. But it is the same. I received them as a gift 10 years ago, I didn't knew they worth so much.
@@HazeAnderson yeah sorry, I though the info on the transfo were there. But the info was harder to find. I could read somewhere that the transfo would be something around 10ohm : 300ohm. Which means the ratio is 1:5. The method for measuring a transfo can be quite more complicated than just measuring the resistance on each winding. The best is to inject a known signal on one side of the transfo and measure it on the other side.
I have an sm57 that has black wires instead of the usual green and yellow wires. How could I figure out which way to solder the wires and if I were to connect these the wrong way round and try to use it, would I damage the microphone?
That's a good question. After more research, I realized I was a bit wrong concerning the transfo and phantom power. There's really few risk of damaging the capsule with phantom power since it's applying 48V on pin 2 as well as pin 3. But to answer your question, inverting the wiring on the xlr plug will not be a dangerous modification. I guess all it will do is invert the phase. When the diaphragm will be pushed, a negative voltage will be applied and vice versa.
it will just reverse the polarity.. you can check it simply by assembling the mic.. capture a short sound like a handclap. In you DAW zoom in on the waveform. If the initial wave goes up, then its OK, if it goes down, you need to shift the wires around :-)
@@HR2635 It reverses phase. We are talking about AC not DC i.e. the voltage is constantly switching +/- with the frequency of the AC generated by the capsule.
found one and was in awe that it was 100$ . dont know where i got it but i openeed it and the green cord was disconnected so idk how to fix it but i could sell it on ebay for some cash i guess
Send me a picture but I think the green wire goes from the input of the transfo to the + of the capsule. There are 2 tabs on the capsule, either the yellow or the green.
@@ThePhilStudio i found that mic and an atr 20 in my basement and searched up the names to see if they where any good..im not an expert on mics or anything
Mine fell on the ground once, and the sound is thin and shit now. So much for the durability :D But it's my fault. Thanks for video. I'll try to fix it.
Either it's missing a wire on the XLR which is pretty easy to fix or the capsule is damage which will need a replacement. Make sure all wires connections are fine from the capsule to the XLR.
Hey there, it happened to me twice while repairing and this is a fatal error unfortunately. The best way to go on this would be to replace the whole capsule. The diaphragm is reallly really fragile and if it fell off, it was probably already affected a little bit.
@@ThePhilStudio yes happen the same, should advertise before! didnt fell, just when presing out it went all out with the plastic and broke something , no more SM57 for me
How to destroy an sm57...by not being careful with the clip on mic grille and catching the edge of the diaphragm...be careful...did not take much...being replaced by PGA181

Thank you for this video. You saved me from a lot of heartache and probably a new SM57.
That's great news!
Thank you very much and the trick to reclose it to not damage cables inside it , that's a precious thing you dont always even think about .
Thanks for NOT being click bait like some of the other videos and actually showing valuable information 👍
Thanks for that good comment! I'm doing my best to avoid click baiting people. ;)
this is the definition of lame "clickbait".
Thank you so much. Worked like a charm I appreciate your efforts.
Thanks for the comment! It's a pleasure to post content like that. Working on more videos.

That damn clip behind the sticker... I got one used and I wanted to give the grill a good clean... so THAT'S how it's taken off...
Yeah it's a really delicate trick to pull it off without damaging the capsule. Be careful.
Do you know what might be an easy one for you that would help me is build a sub woofer kick mic with a speaker.

Could I put pop filter material on the inside in front of the capsule?

I don't know why but I was actually surprised to see the transformer inside. Do you know what it's windings are/ratio is?
That's a great question. I could do a video on that soon.

No more sound? A fragile solder could have worn off. Or the capsule could be damaged, which I hope not and I doubt.

Where do I get a new transformer for an SM57
Ebay has some, don't know if you can trust them but it worth trying. Also, you can contact Shure directly for replacement parts.
