Yeah, Paul wrote it and gave it to Art to sing like a going away present, but when their voices combine then, it's magic.

    Hey Justin,
Great analysis of this timeless classic. It was one of Hal’s masterpieces. This one the music was done in LA. The one I’m going to recommend, I searched and couldn’t find, The Boxer. Both Hal and Joe were flown to NYC to record it a CBS. I’ll let you choose the track you want to do, just don’t pick a live one. Hal is on the record. It’s a unique sound. What I’m going to link is Hal in a Wrecking Crew interview correcting the many mistakes about how the sound was created. It’s a priceless interview and typical Hal. I think this will make for a great song and history lesson combined.

In my semi-retirement, I have been a part-time substitute teacher for almost twelve years now. In the lower grade classes, the kids like to ask a lot of questions, which works for me as a way to introduce myself to them. When I am asked what my favorite song is, this is always the answer. And always will be. It is, in my book, a perfect song.

Everything about this song is perfection. The lyrics, the voice, the arrangement, the build up and crescendo. Just perfect. Listening to it is like wrapping yourself up in a warm, snuggly blanket. ❤ I love that the friend goes from being a 'bridge over troubled water 'in the first part of the song to 'sailing right behind' in the second part. Taking more of a back seat as the 'silver girl 'becomes stronger. Or at least that's my take on it. Stay safe!

One of my first albums as a kid - you need to check out The Boxer next. I learned to play the piano part in Jr High.
The piano was performance and arranged by Larry Knechtel, who is probably most famous as the bass player for Bread.

I was 11 when that song came out, and not yet paying much attention to popular music, but it was everywhere. The arrangement has the impact of a much longer epic, but was short enough to play on the radio unedited (Top 40 radio at the time wouldn't play anything very long). Besides the personal message in the song, it reflected the troubled waters of the Vietnam War, giving the song even more popular resonance.

I wish I could have been in the audience during the infamous Simon and Garfunkel concert in which Art Garfunkel suddenly turned into Garfunkel Hulk. One moment he was singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with that pristine voice of his, and the next moment he was an 8-foot-tall snarling green mass of raging fury. Many believe it was the emotional depth of the song which triggered the transformation. Anyway, as one might expect, the audience was really surprised when this happened and fled in terror as Garfunkel Hulk smashed the stage and sound equipment to smithereens, ultimately flinging Paul Simon himself high into the rafters where the fire department had to rescue him after Garfunkel finally reverted back to his normal self.

Wishing the best to you and others; glad you've prepared. Definitely this song was a monster hit for them back then. As for "gospel feel", I wouldn't at all be surprised if this didn't get played in some churches despite the S & G being jewish (but hey, that jesus guy and all his followers were jewish, too, as I recall). Too bad the duo couldn't stay together after this album.
Folks, stay off those bridges for now, too (this is one of those times to shelter away from water and low-lying spots).

This song was my introduction to S + G back in 1970. I didn't realise at the time it was their swan song.
PS just wrote the first couple of verses as a simple gospel song. It was his production team who persuaded him to big it up with a concluding verse, and it took the song to a different level.
Opening track on a fantastic collection of songs. The album was in the charts for years. Hope you do the rest of them. I'll be looking for them.

Anyway, I hope everything goes well over there. Here in Brazil we recently went through some weather problems too.
