Finally, a Top Gear review where Clark isn't bashing Toyota. I like how when he mentioned the relatively low bhp, he was conscious to point out that the car's good points override it.
Its slow unless your driving 9/10ths through curvy streets or tracks. Owned one for a year and a half and put 28k miles on it... got old fast not being able to pull out in fast traffic safely...
I'm glad that Toyota through this, and the GR86, allowed the working class one last chance to enjoy an aspirational rear wheel drive petrol coupé. Many other brands from Ford, to Vauxhall abandoned it decades ago and soon they will be completely consigned to history.
Lol, this guy replied to a comment over an entire decade old. This is clearly to you and all of the weeaboos obsessed with the little info they have about the automotive history of Japan***** is what you really mean?
Actually it was designed in partnership with subaru to divide the costs of developing and testing a new car. Subaru developed the 2.0 liter boxer engine, and toyota became in charge of this amazing chassis! I don't think you're quite right saying that the br-z "has a much more rigid suspension", I think both cars are exactly alike... but that model didn't come out in my country so I can´t tell for sure.
i've upgraded my car with lower race suspension, 6piston breaks and some pilot sport cup R tires hold the road just fine it ain't no WRX STi but it will turn a corner.. anyways sometimes you can do all the home work you want you may still get a lemon and no warranty to fall back on and you also have to remember every part on a car is only design to work for a # of miles before it needs to be replaced (i learned that the hard way) so for the money the GT86 is worth it
Interior quality matters to me. I don't particularly enjoy driving in a tic tac box. Also, you can't compare a GTI or an FRS to a Formula 1 car. They are two different things. You're somewhat right about the redoing the interior but still...
I personally prefer the GTI, but mainly because I need the large storage on a regular basis. GTI is a bit faster too, but you can't powerslide it since it's front wheel drive
i was going to get one of these in the states. but our dealers are insane. an average 5k usd markup on these cars in the L.A. area. one insane salesman wanted me to pay 1k for a clear bra and 1k for window tint! add to that these cars have been having mysterious issues with the cams where the engine will die (sometimes at speed which is very dangerous) and then get stuck in limp home mode (400 rpm) with most dealers unable to fix the problem. maybe in a few years they have the bugs worked out.
Wait for the 2015 WRX, 2900 pounds vs 3200 now. 2.0t 265 hp with Subaru DI. A 40% real world increase in fuel economy should be expected for around the same price it is now. I would wait.
with less trunk space. Once you go MR you never want anything FWD, nothing is comparable. Celica is definetly not the same as an MR2 and it never will be. Even if they do sacrifice storage space for performance once again for the new MR2, I'm buying. It is absolutely perfect for me, always feel like taking the long way home and tossing it around corners for the pleasure of it, and based on that poll I am not the only one who would buy it or want a new one released. Go look it up for yourself.
Keieffer, I dont think Toyota will but if they do build it put your money were your mouth is. I walked into a Toyota dealer to buy the 2000 MR and left with the far more practical and 5k cheaper Celica GT. Weighing in at only 150 pounds more it had room for my tools and 3 real sized people. It was a blast to drive. A new MR would face the same problem with the 86 and a far more powerful Supra. V.W. Cant build a case for their Blue tech MR. Its a beauty. They feel they can sale it for 32k.
well to be honest it is always easy to find a used car thats just as good as a new car and for 1 tenth of the price but thats only because its a used car. btw toyota announce they will release a supercharged version in the near future :D
well that does suck, i'm 5'9" so i fit just fine. As a daily driver the BRZ/FR-S is great. I love the Miata but dam does the BRZ look good and i don't want to wait for the Miata MX-5 Spyder to come out. It's Mazda's and Alfa Romeo's new joint venture slated to come out in 2014 for the 2015 model year
if you are going to use it as a daily driver don't get a performance clutch and flywheel. Some mods can lead to your warranty being void. At most do a cold air intake and a catback exhaust, if you want a car you can mod go get a used miata it achieves the same goal as this car and is allot cheaper for a used one. then throw a supercharger on it and you got a great cheap fun car.
Subaru also has very loyal customer base that practices immaculate service procedures. I own the BRZ. I have owned 3 other Subaru's. Wile they are solid cars and for the most part reliable. They have had major engine problems from 1998 to 2004 that Subaru still will not acknowledge. The 2000's were the true turning points of the domestics. They made a ton of crappy cars in the 80's. Cars that just did not work period. They lost allot of customers during that time that still refuse 2 come back.
Cool, I kinda wish I'd hung on for a clean 94/95, for some of the refinements. Mine's doing alright but in need of plugs/wires & maybe a PowerFC re-tune etc. Yep, that vid's great!
Lol i know dozens and dozens of Friends in my area that Own a BRZ/FR-S i asked all of them and none of them have heard of a "Cam issue" what-so-ever. Nothing about it on any FR-S or BRZ Forums either. The Car is Brilliant.
I knew it! I had been hoping they would force induction from the beginning, I assumed that, it being a boxer engine, they would have bolted on a turbo. I'll take the supercharger though, it would benefit from the even power delivery.
Anybody already have seen the full video? Which car he was talking about, when said "what on earth they was thinking of, when they build this?" at the end?
Wrong wrong wrong, it wasn't made to save costs. The Subaru version BR-Z has a much more rigid suspension, to it handles better - the GT86 has a softer setup so it's a good tail happy car. This isn't some VW product made to 'save costs'
Lay off the caps fanboy, Toyota isn't shitty. It's a cooperation project between Subaru and Toyota. Both made it possible. Both companies benefited from this joint venture.
Why does Audi/VW/Skoda?Porsche do it? because it means more variety in their offerings for customers that look for such things which might lead them getting the money instead of competitor. That's why.
Subaru is trying to re-wright history. Subaru did not want to build the car. They have the WRX and an all 4wd company. Mr Toyota is a drift fan. He saw the rwd WRX drift cars. The prototype was an shortened legacy chassis with the front half shafts removed. That car was so good at that point Subaru got serious about the project. The Toyota FT-86 show car started everything. I have been following the car for 4 years. If Subaru keeps telling the story folks will start to believe it.
Yeah because driving to work, to school, to a vacation spot, to pick up your kids, to go out to eat, and everything in between in comfort, safety, and in good time is a dull idea; that would never catch on.
:| it.....it is.. Subaru BRZ, Scion FRS, Toyota GT86.. All Identical, only real difference is slight body style differences and the GT86 isn't sold in the US
Ah someone with a brain, how rare. Most people would run out and mod the hell out of it then bitch when they are told their warranty is worthless. I know someone who had his warranty voided on his cobalt SS because he put a smaller supercharger pulley on.
It is the proper successor to the famous AE86, completely shit engine, handling, etc. but somehow that shitstorm of fail somehow balances out to make an awesome drift ride.
No! I think it'd be smarter to own the the Subaru!. It's a modified Liberty/Impreza platform, its a Subaru engine, the gearbox is familiar with both companies. It is pretty much a Subaru. Therefore I'll be looking at the BRZ. Id just prefer owning the one in which most of its components are made.
So it has crap tires and bad grip... That sucks, you dont drift on public roads. Im sorry, but that setup would be horrid especially here in Finland (we have 20cm of snow on the ground already).
as the name indicates, this is a reanimation attempt by toyota to revive one of the greatest drift legends of the 80s, so of course it wasn't built for straights but for corners! the original AE86 had a ~1.5liter engine and ~110HP and was bitchin' easy to drift. i'd say mission accomplished toyota!
Finally, a Top Gear review where Clark isn't bashing Toyota. I like how when he mentioned the relatively low bhp, he was conscious to point out that the car's good points override it.
Because the 86 has a Subaru engine
@@n1ch0l4st8 with a toyota fuel injection though
Its slow unless your driving 9/10ths through curvy streets or tracks. Owned one for a year and a half and put 28k miles on it... got old fast not being able to pull out in fast traffic safely...
Well Clarkson did say that one of the best cars he's ever driven was the Lexus LFA.
@@moss550M how do you not keep up with traffic in that thing? my civic only has 90hp and i never have any problems
That's all of the 86 that was featured on the episode. They go on to talk about the Lexus SC 430 afterwards.
I'm glad that Toyota through this, and the GR86, allowed the working class one last chance to enjoy an aspirational rear wheel drive petrol coupé. Many other brands from Ford, to Vauxhall abandoned it decades ago and soon they will be completely consigned to history.
The AE86 isn't a "Drift car" It was just a popular vehicle for Automotive sports. It was in a lot of rally and grip racing as well. Not just Drifting.
Tell that to Japan.
Lol, this guy replied to a comment over an entire decade old. This is clearly to you and all of the weeaboos obsessed with the little info they have about the automotive history of Japan***** is what you really mean?
i love how the windscreen is blurred in some of the drift scenes when its obviously not Jeremy Clarkson doing the slide! check it out, you'll see.
I remember TG Magazine showed off cars at the same time as the TV show, so it makes sense
so good to see another fun car on the market that is affordable
People who have hated this platform for its lifetime clearly don't know how to drive cars and want the car to drive for them.
I'm suprised Jeremy didn't complain that the cabin is seriously tight for someone his size... But still, GT-86 ftw :))))))
And scion isn't so bad, sure they're not fast but they are fuel efficient and safe, and that means a lot to a good number of people.
Clarkson was saying on Twitter earlier this year, that the new series of Top Gear wont be until early 2013 due to the scheduling on the BBC

Love It. anyway I prefer naming this is the BRZ b/c it shares the soul and confidence behind the wheel that all Subarus inspire. :).

Wow even Clarkson approved?! Im sold
Interior quality matters to me. I don't particularly enjoy driving in a tic tac box. Also, you can't compare a GTI or an FRS to a Formula 1 car. They are two different things. You're somewhat right about the redoing the interior but still...
There are no bad choices, and the differences are relatively minor.
They upgraded the tires on the 2017 and up models which made it hard to get sideways, I will be getting cheap tires next
I almost want to buy this car now. If only it weren't sold in the US as a Scion...
I am right with you. Save the fiberglass and the cold air. I will add slotted rotors also.
I personally prefer the GTI, but mainly because I need the large storage on a regular basis. GTI is a bit faster too, but you can't powerslide it since it's front wheel drive
that would save some more weight also a carbon fiber drive shaft would save more weight and will be stronger

I bet he would like it a lot more if it had the turbo 2.5L flat four or 3.6L flat six that Subie makes...
It's also a Scion FR-S.

When did Top Gear make this? It's not been on tv.
Keieffer, I dont think Toyota will but if they do build it put your money were your mouth is. Yeah I know, just couldn't remember the exact name of it. I watched them on Graham Norton.
And then, right when you thought everything was ok, he goes to bash a rebadged Soarer.
well to be honest it is always easy to find a used car thats just as good as a new car and for 1 tenth of the price but thats only because its a used car.

Subaru BRZ, Toyota GT86 and the Scion FRS are all the same car with minor suspension/ design detail differences, Same engine etc
Wrong wrong wrong, it wasn't made to save costs. The Subaru version BR-Z has a much more rigid suspension, to it handles better - the GT86 has a softer setup so it's a good tail happy car.

Hi Jeremy to answer your question Toyota was thinking about some mountins and Tofu 😮
They were thinking.... "Shit.... If the world ends at Christmas, we want a F$%^ing awesome drift-fest. Quick - Call the Scooby Clinic!"
it also comes in subaru BRZ if ure looking for it.
Have you driven a 2012 Mustang? You need to drive that car. Take the base V6 or the manual GT you will not believe how good it is. I own a BRZ.
Lay off the caps fanboy, Toyota isn't shitty. It's a cooperation project between Subaru and Toyota. Both made it possible. Both companies benefited from this joint venture.
ah, nope. it is mainly a Toyota, Subaru was hesitant to produce their own version of the car at first, but they went on it anyway.
He meant the Lexus SC 430. ;)
Why does Audi/VW/Skoda?Porsche do it? because it means more variety in their offerings for customers that look for such things which might lead them getting the money instead of competitor. That's why.
Is it me or where they just about to show the AE86?
That's weird. You profile said your Canadian. So every car you have is technically an import...
I love my FR-S.
He is talking about the cost of development not the sales price.
not a particularly dramatic animal- I imagined a giraffe
oh, didnt know.
Thanks!

I am of course describing the GT86 and not an e-type. ;)
WHEN THEY BUILT WHAT!?
I'M ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.
He gets it
I personally like the looks of the Subaru better, but the specs are the same aren't they?
croft. nice circuit :)
when is top gear returning with the new season ?
Wheres the second part to it, it cuts off?
Doesn't Subaru have an awd version?
Yeah because driving to work, to school, to a vacation spot, to pick up your kids, to go out to eat, and everything in between in comfort, safety, and in good time is a dull idea; that would never catch on.
:| it.....it is.. Subaru BRZ, Scion FRS, Toyota GT86.. All Identical, only real difference is slight body style differences and the GT86 isn't sold in the US
Break traction at 20 ? Sounds safe.
is this an extra from the last season or has the new season come out?
lol just because the car can do power sliding at 20mph doesnt mean it does it automatically... its only ever going to happen if you want it to.
i love top gear and have similar views on the cars they review but i'm not very excited about this car.
Ah someone with a brain, how rare. Most people would run out and mod the hell out of it then bitch when they are told their warranty is worthless. I know someone who had his warranty voided on his cobalt SS because he put a smaller supercharger pulley on.
390 kph of Group C down at Mulsanne!
It is the proper successor to the famous AE86, completely shit engine, handling, etc. but somehow that shitstorm of fail somehow balances out to make an awesome drift ride.
That car it's a Toyota, a Subaru and an Scion. :)
What is the dvd called? And when can i buy it?
Oooooo that was under the belt. Did I upset you?
VW wins hands down on interior quality. Nothing in the $25,000 range can even come close to the quality of the GTI interior.

Just watch the hungarian show about this car ( Totalcar ). TopGear has follen behind in the very distances.
does anyone know when the 2014 version of the fr-s is coming out? thanks!
Does anyone know if the Gt 86's name is a reference to the original AE86 from toyota?
Chris Harris*
which episode is this????
whats the title of the dvd ?
I think anyone would drive a Skyline.
Thanks :D
What episode/show is this from
Anyone know the name of the DVD?
Ok Jordy that's enough, now GO TO YOUR ROOM
example - 1.57 blurry screen. Probably some Mr Japanese doing the slide
whats the dvd called pls????
2:51 DAT FACE
Good luck in buying one brand new
I want that one

I can't believe he doesn't like the look of it. What's wrong with it?
haha

probably wasnt clarkson
