    Honestly you take all the time in the world. Listening to you talk through the process is on the same level as Bob Ross painting happy little clouds. I personally thank you for helping us all become better knappers.

    Dacite and obsidian are more or less the same stuff. Obsidian is translucent and dacite opaque. Both are formed the same way, rapidly cooling lava with a low gas content. Many obsidian flows will have dacite mixed in. Some pieces can be half dacite and half obsidian in the same rock! They are both great rocks to knapp...

    It looks much better- to be able to watch your video in HD you have to select that option from whatever video editing software you use

    Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, this video is not showing in HD! Someone mentioned I need to use the HD option from the video editing software. I dunno, my computer skills are lacking! I did not edit this video, just downloaded it directly to TH-cam. I shot the video in format because that is recommended for MacBooks, but is suppose to be 720p resolution. I guess I will try importing the MP4 file to iMovie '11 and then choose the HD option. Any suggestions appreciated....jim

    HD takes longer to upload but the quality makes it worth the effort. Your videos are so educational they should all be in HD. Great quality, and it is always a pleasure to watch an artist at work.

    Looks good...I have a box of obsodian and another of mixed flint pads antler and hammerstones in the corner...you've inspired me to try it and see if I can become as smart as a caveman! LOL I know I'm gonna reduce a lot of pretty rock to gravel...but I tried it a little on some junky rock and it seems kinda fun/relaxing. I hope I can one day make something good enough to pass for a usable point!

      Thanks, knapping with a hammerstone is the most satisfying knapping there is, just bashing 2 rocks together and ending up with a very useful tool!

    Enjoy the journey Andrew. The slag glass should knap well. We had a co-generation plant where I worked and there was always big chuncks of slag that resembled obsidian when they cleaned the boilers. Take it slow and most of all have fun!

    Yes, cool article and really hits home as I use to hunt points in that same area! Fort rock cave which is nearby was excavated many years ago and they found sage brush sandals radio carbon dated to around 13,000 years ago! There is some really old stuff out there!...

    Inspiring as always Jim! Really happy to see a TH-cam notice from you. I DID leave you some Dacite at the pits, but I quarried some beauties. Thanks for the info on that way back when. Did you see the article in the NY Times about the Paisley caves coprolites?

    What is the difference between dacite and obsidian. They look very similar even in the way they work.

    When Im loading on my mackbook using imovie, I make sure I have the standard aspect ratio of (4:3) and then I usually load the vid. Usually you choose the HD option and go from there.

    Hey Jim...are those your legs or are you riding on a chicken? J/K buddy...do you ever get flakes in you shoes? I knap in my flip-flops sometimes and I've been lucky to keep all my toes thus far. I had to get in the habit of dusting off the inside of my flip-flops before standing up. Had to learn from experience. Nice tip for us beginners I guess...

  • @paleomanjim
    @paleomanjim  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, those chicken legs even scarred me! I do get flakes in the feet and usually empty the shoes before walking but what is worse is when the stuff gets in the carpet and my wife finds them with her feet! ...

    That's what we need, someone who explains what they're doing and why they're doing it! Every time I try to Knapp a rock it snaps in half. I'm trying to learn how to use hammer stones but it seems like I'm not getting any better I break every rock I get my hands on.
