So ffxi retail is the commercial game. The official square enix game you buy. You also get private servers where people have modded it and you can download it for free. (Catseye, horizon, Eden for example) private servers differ a lot, usually, from the official retail version of the game. The server I'm on right now is very populated compared to others. I'm on asura server.
