    Most of us that don't comment often but religiously watch each one of your videos, think you're doing an amazing job - from the content you post to the small portion of your life that we see, it's easy to tell that you're dedicated and work extremelly hard. Easier said than done, but I wouldn't focus on the hateful comments. You're doing amazing, don't be too hard on yourself ❤

    I have fed 3 dogs together at the same time… I just got all of their food bowls ready then set them down with each of them spaced apart a little bit. I always make sure to watch though to make sure that one dog doesn’t eat the other dog’s food. If they do ever get aggressive and start to fight, have a spray water bottle handy to spray them both in the face if they fight, or you can buy a device that makes a high pitched nose when you press a button. Either of those should make any fighting stop and helps teach them that you won’t tolerate fighting. You’re doing a great job…it’ll just take a little time for them to get really used to one another.

    I just wanted to say it to someone else, because no one said it to me until I joined a Facebook group…. It’s okay to hate your puppy at first. It’s a big adjustment and they’re so much work on the front end.
    I couldn’t live without my sweet angel dog now, but I regretted my decision for a while.
    The girls in that group called it “puppy blues”
    I turned a corner at 3ish months, basically when I wasn’t worried about her going potty in the house anymore! It gets better!!

    Ok I’m 2 for 2 with making my husband come in the room to show him when you hold up rue 😂 bc she’s just the cutest i squeal out loud and then my dogs go crazy lol Also we feed our dogs on separate sides of the kitchen. They are not aggressive about food tho, but one will just let the other eats hers if she comes over.

  • @MathildeG
    @MathildeG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Don't feed your dogs together, that will worsen the food guarding. Have Rue eat in her crate. It's normal for dogs to be territorial at first, so don't fret too much :). Just monitor their behaviour with each other (and learn to read your dogs' body language really well to prevent any fights). With patience they'll get along!

      yes! We got a second golden when our first golden was 3 and the puppy made him super territorial over his toys. It took some time for him to loosen up to the idea of the puppy but they've grown to be the best of friends. They still fight over toys but in playful way now. Just takes some time for sure!

    To steer away from the negativity, nobody has it right, and we learn as we go! There’s definitely a fine line between kind suggestions and unnecessary rudeness. I hope you don’t let the negativity get to you. Also, we just got a Golden Retriever puppy who just turned 12 weeks yesterday! So exciting to kind of go through this new puppy journey at the same time! You’re doing amazing ❤️ thank you for sharing as always!

    So I was scared of introducing my dog to my boyfriend’s dog because we know they both have high anxiety. I received advice that walking dogs together helps them develop a pack mentality. We found that walking the dogs together (everyday for 2-3 weeks, same time of day) really really helped with them learn to share toys, homes, etc!! Shared routines are very important and helpful!

    Honestly it will be more than fine with Winnie and Rue - give them time, that is all they need to adjust. I don't believe there is some magical or perfect advice... what is perfect for me may not be for you and that is OK!
    They will grow to love each other, Winnie is more reserved, Rue will eventually bring out the puppy playful side of Winnie.. you will see. It is an adjustment having 2... but you will get there! Give yourself and them the patience and grace 💛
    I have 3 and they are a handful! But I wouldn't change it for the world. Dogs like children have such varied personalities.. just embrace it I would say, hard to change personality and why would you want to? 🙂
    Love your channel.. 2 very lucky doggies to have you.

    Try hand feeding Rue if she is being a little aggressive towards food. This helps them understand that food comes from you and that you’re sharing it with her and it’s not hers to be aggressive over. It also really helps build a bond between you two and can help teach her how to take food gently from people. Hand feeding is the perfect training opportunity also for teaching basic commands. So many benefits :) we just got a Doberman puppy and this has helped so much. Rue is so stinking cute 🥰

      I agree ! We also played in our dogs food from time to time to let them to its Okay to share and be nice !
      I think puppies are usually aggressive with their food since a lot of them had to fight their siblings to eat
      We have 4 dogs , trust it gets better ! They will love one another and play with one another lol 😆 keep up the good work ❤

    As somebody who trains dogs for sport 3-5 times a week, my best advice is to invest in a trainer. So much of dog behaviour really needs to be observed in person and trainers have the benefit of having seen hundreds of dogs, whereas many of your commenters (even myself!) have not. Gretchen Geraghty had her dog Brody trained with a professional trainer and from what she shared she was pleased with the results. In the end, hiring a trainer means less confusion on your part, and is an investment toward a wonderful companion and partner for the future. Congrats on the new pup! While they’re adorable in the puppy stage, they’re so much work. Hang in there!

    As if you can’t get two dogs? Are people ok.. judgment so not necessary 😂 I promise Winnie and Rue will end up loving each other. I think the pups can def feel your energy when you talk to them and tell them it’s ok. Winnie just needs her own time to adjust. ❤️

    To help with food aggression, pet your dog while they are eating and put your hands in their bowl so they get used to it! My bf is a dog trainer and that is what I did with my dog since I got her and she is not aggressive with food

  • @makayla4292
    @makayla4292 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It can be helpful to touch and get involved with Rue's food. You can try hand feeding her some of it and just generally kind of bothering her while she's eating to get her used to the idea that it's okay for other people/dogs to be around her food. Also you can try taking her bones/toys away briefly while she's playing with them and give her a treat or pet in return so she starts to positively associate you being around the things she cares about

    • @mademoisellesachaaa
      @mademoisellesachaaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This can actually be very dangerous advice to share, a lot of trainers recommend to do the opposite of this as it can actually create resource guarding in a lot of dogs. The less threatened a dog feels regarding resources like food, the less they feel it’s necessary to protect it.
      I share that because I also received that advice when I got my first dog, but since spending a lot of time with professional trainers for both pet obedience as well as competitive sport training, I’ve had my knowledge corrected in this area and learned the opposite is true.

    • @makayla4292
      @makayla4292 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mademoisellesachaaa This is basically the only thing I've ever heard recommended for dealing with resource guarding in puppies. I'm obviously not recommending anyone do that with an older rescue or a dog likely to be legitimately aggressive. I did that sort of thing every day with my dog when she was young and she has not shown a single sign of resource guarding since

    Rachel don’t stress Winnie& Rue will figure it out.😜. Remember Winnie was away for a bit plus she just did a 3 hour car ride. It’s only the first day so don’t expect too much from them or yourself. As a Veterinary Technician the best advice I can give is they can sense your mood. So if you’re stressed or nervous they will be too. So try to relax and enjoy them❤. Also loud noises may make them scared of fireworks or thunder. If you want Rue to stop something get a water bottle for each room and give her a shot of water( obviously aim for her body not her face). This doesn’t hurt at all and it’s enough of a little spook to make her stop❤

  • @savannahcriswell8334
    @savannahcriswell8334 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that helped with food aggression with puppies is keeping your hand within the bowl when feeding them. And then over time grab the food and hand it to her. It will show her your not a threat to her food and you will not take it away from her. Also you feeding her some from the bowl while she is eating helps her know that you are giving her the food not taking it. The same with toys, if any aggression say a firm “no”. Shut it down quick and let her know you did not like it. It will show her your in control/the alpha. My dog when she was a puppy was the exact same and all these things helped. I got it from a dog trainer on TH-cam!😊

    Hand feed every single meal to get rid of the resource guarding!!! They will trust you then and no growling. Also if they have a bone, before it’s gone, work on taking the bone randomly but switch it out for a high reward treat. Worked for us!

  • @kelseylynn4978
    @kelseylynn4978 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! We just got a chocolate lab puppy and when i did my fist initial visit with our vet i had very similar questions since we are crate training him. They said feeding in the crate is totally fine and can be done for their whole life just to make sure you take their bowl out once they are done and they don’t see their food bowl as a toy. To help with food aggression you could also try taking the food away while they are eating to show that they are not the dominate one same with toys as well. Just like you play with their ears and paws and mouth to make sure you are able to check on anything you might need food/toys is the same way

    I have two dogs (a puppy and a 9 year old) and had a similar experience with the resource guarding. I’d say definitely give Winnie a safe space to go where she can be by herself and have breaks from the puppy. You can do this easily by setting up a baby gate somewhere! Feeding Rue in the crate is awesome but another thing you can teach her is the “place” command . There’s lots of tutorials on TH-cam but this definitely helped give my puppy some boundaries when it came to my older dog.It’s also great for if you have company over or are cooking and want to keep an eye on them.
