- With the push of a button, television in Germany became colorful .Until 1967 everything was black and white on German TV. And then came color on the screen, more than 10 years after the USA, and with a number of technical hurdles that also had to be overcome. Even the kickoff was not without faux pas. When former German Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Willy Brandt pressed the red button to turn on color at the International Consumer Electronics Fair in Berlin on August 25, 1967, a new era began. Germany became the first European country to receive color TV. On this episode of History Stories, we explore the historic moment where Germany went color and made a lasting impression on technology in Europe.

Has anyone noticed that they switched to color before they pushed the button?
Which leads me to think that they were using colour cameras all along in the programme, but removed the colour signal so as build up suspense etc. Cheeky little technicians. 😁

Never forget the amazing technical feat of being able to watch a color signal on a black-and-white tv in black and white! They extended the original signal, they didn't create a new one. Unlike the DVB-T to DVB-T2 change tens of years later 😁

Erst kommt die Farbe, dann der Startknopf. Offensichtlich war der Techniker nicht ganz synchron mit dem Bundeskanzler. Aber die Meisten konnten das nicht sehen weil s/w.
BBC2 began in colour on 1st July 1967. Germany was not the first.
Absolutely right! BBC2 indeed made history by covering the Wimbledon Game in color on July 1st, 1967.

Mexico had color tv back in 1942, Guillermo Gonzales Camarena was the inventor.

Deshalb sollte das Farb-TV auch nur in der Nacht ausgestrahlt werden. Sonst schauen die Frauen tagsüber ständig TV und vernachlässigen somit Kinder, Küche und Kirche. 😆
I never saw the point of early color TV here in the US. Everything was sort of washed out, or screamingly bright. B&W gave a sharper picture well into the 70s.
Wahnsinn. Und heute haben wir teilweise schon 8K.
The American NTSC system was of a bad quality. In Europe we mentioned it the Never Twice ths Same Color. The French developed their own color system called Secam: Systeme Evolué Contre les AMericain (Sysrem developed against the Americans.). We are lucky that many movies and TV series were shot on film. With the newest digital film scanners that we have today, we can see movies and series in the highest possible quality.

@@rwsrwsrwt I have never seen a Secam broadcast. I now that the French broadcasters used the PAL system and only the tansmitters were in Secam.

Colour TV was magical. But we got used to it. A little too quickly unfortunately... I wish the novelty lasted a bit more.
Nothing ever came close to the excitement. Maybe it was because I was a young lad of five.
