Poor planning. They should have taken a survey of anticipated attendance and then select a venue that could safely accommodate all the faculty, students, families, tech crew, etc.
At graduation time, the student gets invitation limits (4 guests, 6 guests) and they are given admission tickets. You can't get into the auditorium unless you have a ticket. I don't know how they do it at Howard, but that's the way it should be. It seems IMO that these were "uninvited" guests. Family members who just decided they were going. And I feel ashamed for some of those people who had on daisy duke shorts (cheeks showing) because you don't go to a graduation like you're going to the park. Put some clothes on!
@@Chicago48it should've been that way but there were no tickets these people were parents/the only family members who came to watch their graduates that's why they were so upset in the first place because no one was going to be able to watch them from inside
Common Sense is UNCOMMON nowadays, even at the "so called" ILLUSTRIOUS Howard University. #HowardChina #ISeeYouHBCU 👁🙄🎓
How about animalistic behavior? ...This is graduation ceremony not section 8 shutting down applications. The family gaslite a young persons moment of escaping exactly this type of behavior.
I'm not defending the behavior but Howard did the same thing last year. They don't plan for the size of the possible turnout.
Exactly. Too many people want that photo opportunity to post on Instagram or Facebook to somehow live vicariously through the accomplishments of family. Rather than allowing the deserving graduates their time to shine, they get agro because they can't insert themselves into it
Seems like a very easy thing to plan for. There are thousands of colleges and universities across the country, and they all do this every year with no problems
@@pete6705 it's blatant white supremacy and right wing discrimination. Not to seem crazy but this type of behavior and sentiment occurred in 1933 in the country of Germany. Right before the far right wing murderous dictator "Adolph Hitler" came to power. Vote Democrat. GENOCIDE NEVER AGAIN
Very poor behavior on the part of the guests. The important thing is that your family member is graduating and becoming a nurse! It’s not about the ceremony. That’s the problem these days with the social media generation - it’s all about the ceremony or appearances; not about the accomplishments.
Wow, they broke windows and started a riot in the lobby?
Powerful. Strong. Vibrant culture of love and peace.
exactly, one of these is going to be your nurse one day. Yikes and no thank you.
I feel bad for the grads.
Nah, I was there. They let people in BEFORE the event was suppose to start. Thats why when they opened the doors at 5:30pm they didn’t even let half the line in. Some people were waiting 40 minutes at the entry doors and they came BEFORE the event even started.
Yea but really it shouldn't have been an issue of how many people were there because they should have had tickets for the venue or some controlled entry system in place since they were aware of the venue ahead of time they needed to distribute tickets in this case. They knew the seating /occupancy limits before all this.
So you’re saying people who arrived early for a seat found one while those who didn’t were turned away.
What a concept.
The university should LITERALLY be disbarred.
Even if the hall was undersized, there was no reason to act a fool in the lobby... That said. It's impossible to place judgment on the planners without knowing the restrictions given to each nursing graduate and whether or not the attendance exceeded the numbers they planned for based on guest restrictions - e.g., 5 tickets per graduate... Assuming fault without information reveals an individual's biases, nothing more. Justifying people disturbing the peace and the graduation ceremony is just disturbing.
They literally said it was one of the biggest in history they knew how big it was going to be and still chose to make it first come first serve in a small auditorium a lot of graduates didn't even have a single family member inside to watch them walk they should at least had tickets so each graduates could have some family to watch them and people wouldn't have traveled so far
@@neverPumpkin "Biggest?" What does that mean to anyone? Why are non-critical thinkers so easily pacified by anecdotal evidence and assumptions? To even begin to criticize the planners, we would need to know the number of Nursing graduates for 2024, multiply that by 5, and compare that number to the capacity of the hall that they used.
@@shopobjetdart Howard is a popular university they knew how many grads there were, they didn't do tickets like usual graduations they didn't follow through with what they said and let ppl in early they knew it was the biggest out of all their graduations yet they didn't have it outside as usual and made it in a smaller venue? They knew only 3-4 family members per graduate could be accommodated yet they didn't require tickets? It's not like people were going to enforce that rule themselves. Terrible planning all around
Unfortunately, the whole story is not being told. It was not just the nursing school; the ceremony included all of allied health-in the world of fake news, you got taken along with others. With that being said, all of Allied Health and Nursing already created a capacity issue; barely any parents made it in. I am not condoning the behaviors, but the families were quiet and peaceful until the security guard was unprofessional. As a matter of fact, most were stunned and seemed confused. The noise was from a group crammed in the entryway --maybe about 45 - 60 people. People could walk in and out to get updates; I witnessed unacceptable behavior from the guards. My child wanted to exit as the noise level in the auditorium and the heat was too much--there was NO air conditioning-- the guard would not let her out even as she stood there crying---get the facts before you speak--this is vital.
they have been planning since January with weekly meetings since March
That woman who tried to blame it on the family and not the poor planning of the institution (but for their carelessness in preparation)should be reprimanded. That show of lack of accountability should never be tolerated from a leadership position
Regardless the people didn’t know how to act. You guys trying to defend bad behavior says everything.
@WyldWillow Always defending your cultures destruction. This is why your culture repeats itself 🤷♂️
No, it was the stupid people outside not knowing how to behave. Sometimes you take the L
It's sad folks don't know how to act at such an amazing time.
Lies, the fire department reports that they treated an injured student and did not shut the venue down.
Yes they say that already, but how do you expect the ceremony to go on WHEN THERES A WHOLE ASS RIOT IN THE LOBBY !
Make book there was a limit on guests per graduate. Unfortunately, these folk like to bring the entire extended family to any graduation/promotion ceremony along with the requisite horns and noise makers. This includes the obnoxious screaming and calling out for "their graduate" which totally exceeds any expected decorum. In other words, "it's par for the course!"
My son graduated from IU Bloomington and they said no noise makers, clear bags, and was given 15 tickets, I bet people just showed up without a ticket/ invite and came on there own and this is what you get everybody just can’t come including Pookie from down the street 😂
This is what happens when you get them in large groups.
Have an outdoor graduation somewhere. No excuse to not have a big enough place. 😢
typical... expected .... not a surprise
It has nothing to do with how relatives act but everything to do with howard not making sure the venue is big enough to accommodate friends and family. People spend way too much damn money to not be able to see them walk. Howard needs to do better because the same problem existed last year with Crampton no being a big enough space for graduation.
In my experience grads are given a limited amount of tickets for their guests. You can't tell the whole neighborhood to come to your graduation.
@@Chicago48 They didn't have tickets it was first come first serve a terrible way to plan it since many graduates didn't even have a single family member in the auditorium with them
YES it does have to do with how relatives act. That is the problem with a community that doesn't hold people accountable. You are right -Howard is at fault for the lack of planning BUT NOT THE VIOLENCE
Blaming the family members... Did y'all have any sort of a ticketing system so that you can estimate and account for how many would be in attendance. If not then this is on folks at HU... I know that sis is tight she missed this graduation too...
Lmao so because they can't get it, they ruin it for everyone and that's justified? 🤡
Just cause you can’t get in doesn’t mean you should throw a tantrum and start rioting
Keeping the stereotype alive
Unfortunately, this narrative is not correct. As a parent at the event, I know this is not what happened. The fire department did NOT end the event. It was the choice of the staff and the Dean who unprofessionally commented, "Our relatives don’t know how to act.” I am saddened by the university's response. It broke my heart to witness students crying and being undone by the chaos and confusion during preparation, not having their families present to see this particular moment, and the staff's unprofessionalism during the ceremony. Even more sad are the mothers and families who came from across the nation and countries to witness what was supposed to be a happy event. Families stood in line since 400, and we were all told the doors would open at 5 pm and close at 550 pm. The doors actually closed before 520 because they had reached capacity. This is a clear violation of the expectations set by the university regarding the event's organization. The issue here is poor planning on behalf of the university -- this graduation was not just for the nursing school but was for the nursing school and allied health; thus, with the students, faculty, and staff, Crampton would have already neared capacity. My student did not have a 2020 high school graduation and an unacceptable 2024 graduation--sad. As an alumnus, I am embarrassed.
Well, the dean is right - "some" people don't know how to act. But can you explain - were the grads given a limited amount of tickets for their guests?
SMH!!! My family has always attended Indiana University, but my daughter begged us to let her attend Howard University. She just finished up freshman yr, and I can honestly say I'm not surprised what happened after experiencing this past yr!!! Unorganized is definitely correct!!!
@@Chicago48no tickets given to students, barely any families got inside
Sorry you are wrong. Yes, I agree that there was poor planning -there should be a limit on relatives. HOWEVER, saying "our relatives don't know how to act" was accurate. Someone got mad and broke glass and, frankly, (ON VIDEO) it looked like Black Friday (the way it used to be)-no racism intended. This has to be the FIRST TIME this has ever occurred at a college and it is not a good look for Black Americans.
They should have told them how many people they could invite and maybe set up another room that the families could watch live.
They did they limited the even to 5 family members each, more family members were coming in then anticipated and a riot begun before alternative solutions could be met
Sooo.. this is the example the adults showed to the graduating class?
Someone should have reminded them that graduation is for THE STUDENTS!..
They should have had it outside. People bringing 5 auntie, 3 cousins, 5 grandmas, 7 brothers and sisters…
If they aren't capable of planning a graduation WTH are they teaching them. Do not hire
Turns out these “Nursing Schools” Math is just as bad as their reading? 😂
The fact still remains Howard cost far too much to not have a venue big enough to accommodate those who may invite their whole neighborhood. For some they may be the 1st. So don't tell me who or how many they can invite. Tell me how they can better plan for the possibility of the community to come and support the accomplishment of the students. So stop defending the institution and defend those who are paying for them to go.
Even if they don't have one they needed to contract a venue and if they could not predict how many ppl would turn up [if the never asked the students] then they needed to have ticketing in place. This is unacceptable and you're right it costs way too much for this.
I want to see how this is going to be spun and blamed on the white man
I swear these are the types of people that will trip when walking then blames white people for there stupidity
Well, if Whitey hadn't kidnapped their ancestors from Africa, they wouldn't be here in the first place. So I do somewhat blame our forefathers for this.
Howard has had the best grad ceremonies in the nation! In class sizes this large, holding it outside may have been better! (Did ut rain?) To All the Awesome Graduates! Congratulations! The very best to you and everything you do! Now get out there and music 🎶 make this world a better place 🎶. Alum 2007! ✌🏽 ❤ 🙏🏽
It’s the university fault graduation should have been held at a large venue.
Everyone gets a certain amount of tickets they can use. How about you hold the people accountable for being unruly but accountability is like kryptonite to many of you.
Even with it being at a larger place for everyone, the same uncivilized behavior would follow. In some way some, family members are going to celebrate lack of self control. Sad truth...and save the "not all's"...we all see and hear it.
atrocious comment from someone of that level, an expertise. If gaslighting was a video......
POOR PLANNING ON HOWARD'S PART!!!!!! You did not know the size of the crowd expected?!!!
This is really sad and embarrassing, just because you are grown does not mean you are smart
I am not going to be near those.
As a Howard University alum, I am devastated by the behavior of those attendees. I am saddened on behalf of the proud and deserving graduates that they had to experience this. We've got to learn how to handle our disappointments in a more constructive way. This mayhem was utterly uncalled for. I do agree that the University may be guilty of poor planning, so discussions about how future problems can be avoided are necessary.
Is nothing sacred or important to some people.
Sorry these hard working graduates missed out due to uncivil behavior.
If they knew there was a capacity issue they should have allotted a limited number of tickets to each student.
The usual suspects
"Hold on. Wait a minute. Something ain't right. You telling me I've studied all these years, wrote all these papers, just for you to tell me NO?!"
Its a culture thang. sure it is. When keeping it real goes wrong.
always some bullsh!t when it comes to us…
If the building was too small, then they should have had it outside
All that money Howard gets (HBSU), they needed a bigger venue. This never happens at people graduation that do not look like us.
My college did a survey to see how many students were graduating and attending the ceremony and then told us we were allowed a maximum of 5 guests.and even then it was first come first serve
They couldn’t have done that?!
So... they didn't have tickets??how is this possible???
When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Blame the administrators for failing to schedule an appropriately-sized venue for all attendees. Most university graduation ceremonies take place in arenas these days. Howard is a failure.
How surprising
I'm not defending the action of the person or people destroying the property but I do blame Howard for its lack of concern for the friends and family who have traveled to see their graduates just to be told they can't because Howard wants to continue to hold this event in a too small auditorium. I'm willing to bet you every celebrity and high profile person who had someone graduating was inside and not turned away. Make it make sense for them not to plan better in an effort to avoid turning friends and family away like they do when it's time for student intake.
"some of these graduates will get to walk this weekend the university's main commencement ceremony is set for saturday morning...."
so several things:
1) why only some students? why not have all of the students walk?
2) why are there 2 ceremonies or events?
3) alternatively, what if those that couldn't get in could do it on that saturday morning?
Wow, a college graduate just said “my parents came down from North Carolina” lol
The ceremony for majors should have only a very selected few guests for each graduate, no more than three. The main ceremony can have a lot more
Look at how much standards have been lowered.🤦🏽♂️
Yea, as always. I'm not surprised. No respect at all. What a shame.
Poor planning, poor response
We don’t know the whole story but it did sort of sound like 1st come 1st serve when it came to having seats. However Howard University knows how many seats they have vs how many graduates and should have fairly given out the number of seats and maybe even assigned seats to prevent this problem. They could have clearly assigned 2 seats per graduate and then charged for the extra seats that were left over 1st come 1st serve on the Extra seats.Next time there will invitations and Security.
all they had to do was just start calling out the names really fast. i'm sure they were already in order. besides everybody had to leave, why not turn it into the roll call?
Howard you needs to do better these young adults not in 2002 that did not graduate in 2020 from high school deserves better.
G H E T T O
I am so sorry to these graduates. I really hope you guys can redo the graduation because class of 2024 deserves so much more . I hope and I am pretty sure they will redo this they must !!!!!
Culture is a factor in behavior, good or bad. Second, conducting oneself appropriately makes all the difference at a college commencement. Likewise, it is a testament to your character, values, and respect for the institution. Know this, uphold values that inspire others, and set examples for future graduations. Last, stop blaming schools and higher learning institutions for the lack of grown-ups not conducting themselves appropriately in public. It starts at home.
there are some people in the comments who were there. everything you wrote seems way off base
The graduates were upset because not even a single member of their families would get to see them they didn't even want to walk without them. The university didn't follow through with what they said and they had no one to organize the line they let people in before the time they were supposed to and ppl were saving seats so others could walk in without waiting which made many graduates not have anyone to watch them
I mean didnt people have to RSVP with how many family members were coming? Whose at fault here? Me personally dont mind if there is a walk or not. Its that degree I need to move forward
No tickets it was first come first serve they had other graduations in there earlier that day that did have tickets which is why those ones worked out
It's called an OVERFLOW ROOM - next time set one up.
All i'm saying is i waited and waited and waited to see my oldest Grandaughter take her walk. 👿Never happened👿. Wasn't there, didn't attend but still, EXTREMELY 👿😤🤬👿
This is a HOT mess!!!
Was it the triggers? Or the Lights.
The ignorants outside bangin should be so ashamed
I think this would be a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and give thanks for the great contributions of the Black community to our society. Their peaceful and generous nature make them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture. Their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real estate values are fueled by the mix of African Americans into an area due to their caring and respectful nature of these communities, an example of all they have achieved through their enthusiasm for self- improvement by hard work and a self-reliant can-do nature. Without their industrious and creative drive, we would most undoubtedly be poorer as a nation.
How about , you need a ticket to get in🤔🤔🤔
WOW!!!
Congratulations yall im sorry yall got shut down
Holy mackerel. All those DEI nurses.
@kennyroberson6216 We would all love it if you can prove him wrong, but you can't.
That makes you the 🤡
They gave away too many tickets
They think it's OK to turn away friends and family who have traveled to celebrate with their graduates
Dang, can't even graduate. Gee wiz people get it together for the greater good.
Once again another unorganized situation involving another HBCU. Do better!!This event is not new. I personally witnessed NCAT fail to call some of their graduates’ names year after year. It’s sad when our own institutions fail us.
The real HU!

Howard took an L on this smh. For the second year in a row
A 😭 shame. They should have gave out tickets. Im sure some f** acted up
Howard should be ashamed. We should be celebrating our black excellence. Ridiculous that the school didn’t prepare for their moment.
Well this is why subsaharan Africa couldn’t figure out to build a two story building until whitey showed up. Poor planning and poor behavior. Typical.
Yes its the school's fault. These things don;t happen at historically white colleges.
WHAT DUUUUH. THAAAAT'S AMAAZUN
Animals ruining their kids celebration
My Alma Mater. SMH.
In the spirit of diversity, next time they need to invite real administrators who knows how to do basic event planning including capacity estimation. But, there is a chance that not a single one left.
You covered this well because event planning like this is not easy and it's actually a positive thing they had so many graduates
event planning for a graduation is actually easy. you have several months to prepare and it seems like someone who doesnt know what theyre doing AT ALL put it together.
They knew that they needed some where bigger to hold the ceremony!! No accountability for. HBCU are jokes
I think there were faults form both parties, very unorganized and shameful on Howard’s end but also very shameful on the parents and relatives end for acting out that way I mean smashing doors and everything just very uncalled for and I get your frustration and I would be livid too but you can’t just destroy things or cause a ruckus it’s not gonna solve anything
One person broke one window tho everyone else was against it and told him to stop. Everyone else was trying to reasonably negotiate with the person at the door
Lmao this is EXACTLY why I chose an Ivy over an HBCU…..no regrets 🤢
There's no way to make this right ... but they could always consider suing for breach of contract ... I'd see the contract as one between the students and the school. Howard made an offer which included a graduation ceremony. Students accepted that offer by enrolling. In way of consideration students paid fees out the Wazoo. Class action on the Horizon ... money won't make them whole, but they can take the family to dinner.
Now I've participated in a few university graduations, a community college graduation, and even a high school graduation over 50 years ago. What a disgrace this one became and the faculty comment went over the line. Who organized this mess ... if they have a school of business and management, certainly don't send your child there. I'd toss in a couple of old military acronyms here, but they'd flag my post.

Crammed-in Hall for the win though
Poor planning and bad behaviors by some. Embarrassing especially it's the crown jewel of HBCU.

HBCU…………………..Always stowing the virtues of the culture
Well, it's nice to see them not protesting and yelling at white people or police for once
