Timeframes are always very difficult to pin down, but we are for sure VERY close on Vanilla, and actively working on HiOD and Calico. Wish I could tell you on those two…but they will still take some work and some luck to finish!
Great video! I'm excited to send in my chocolate boys shed! He was sold to me as a banana pastel chocolate leopard mojave but I'm PRETTY sure he is Cinnamon not leopard, but now I can test his chocolate too, which is so hard to see if is there with him being banana!
It all depends on how much time the shed has spent wet, or in high humidity/moist conditions. If the shed was in wet/humid/most conditions for very long, then the DNA is likely degraded and won’t amplify. But I have sheds I collected quickly after they were shed, completely dried out, and then put in zip lock bags and kept at room temperature for over 6 years now, and they still test just fine!
I have only run a couple citrus pastes, but so far they have run the same as any other pastel. But time will tell if that stays the same. If you know people with citrus pastels, I’d love for them to send them in so we can run a few more to help make sure!
I just hatches out a chocolate ghi clutch. The pairing was a chocolate Batman x Ghi. Making an amazing het clutch. All the babys are close to the same size.

now that its testable, have you thought of running sequencing that figures out what part of spider is responsible for wobble/proposed inner ear issues, and then extrapolating to the other genes? I love some of the stuff in the complex but wont touch it til I know whats safe and wont cause animals with issues
From other species with mutations in this same gene, we know that this is a common occurrence because this gene plays a part in melanocytes moving along with nerve cells along the neural crest during embryonic development. So it is very common for mutations in genes like this to also cause neurological problems. And really from breeding I think we have a pretty clear understanding which morphs are likely to have these problems. But an easy way to get a good idea for the spider complex is go on Morph Market and look up each spider complex morph and any that have supers available, it is much less likely there will be any neurological problems. But the ones that don’t have supers available are the ones more prone to neurological problems. And you can also reach out to people producing them and ask them about their breeding stock and experience with spider complex morphs. For sure some awesome morph in the spider complex!!!
@@raregeneticsinc I’ve heard even blackhead, being the most apparent “stable” morph in the complex can still wobble in super form…. Plus some people don’t seem to care much about wobble and will produce animals with it and in super form reguardless of impacts on the animal because it looks cool (heck I’ve heard this just about spider). I have heard from some breeders, including prominent ones that all of the complex can be prone to wobble issues (like at a higher rate than incubation issues or regular defect occurrences). I’ve also heard people claim that none of the spider, champagne or hgw animals don’t ever wobble and have never produced animals with a wobble to any degree which is hard to believe. It’s something I’m happy to avoid til science was there to give actual information and this feels like the closest I’ve gotten so far 😅 I’m also curious for the 8ball and BEL complex with kinking/duckbilling and eye issues. I’ve heard nothing concrete on why the 8ball complex has issues besides that it does, and that BEL\high white on the face have some sort of issue with the basement of the eye not getting something causing deformities (trying to find it on the mm forum thread but not having luck). I’d really like some actually backed up information to get out on exactly what causes these things to happen. I’ve just seen too many breeders shrug about these issues stating the animal is pretty so it’s worth it for me to trust much of what’s out there.

There have been some nice papers about the spider morph and what that does physiologically to the animals. Hopefully over time there will be more papers like that for other reptile morphs! Projects like that take a lot of time and money to do properly, so it takes awhile. But hopefully with more excitement about reptile genetic testing we will also see more studies on defects!

Are old sheds (years) viable for testing?
It all depends on how much time the shed has spent wet, or in high humidity/moist conditions.
