The Great Ocean Road is the longest war memorial in the world. It was built by Returned servicemen in honour of those that didn't make it back.
Somewhat fitting this video comes out, and you're travelling on it this week... being ANZAC day is tomorrow.
I hope you manage to attend and experience a dawn service and see why ANZAC day is so important to Australia.

"Two rescued after London Bridge collapses.
One of Victoria’s premier natural attractions, the London Bridge rock formation in the Port Campbell National Park near Peterborough, collapsed last night only minutes after two sightseers had crossed it. The pair, stranded on the sea end of the rock when the arch collapsed without warning at 7:45 pm, were rescued by a police helicopter about three hours later.
Police said no one was injured when the 40-metre section of arch, one of several famous rock formations along the Great Ocean Road, fell into the surf."
A helicopter filming a car advertisement crashed into the arch in May 1989. We visited and walked unto the formation in October 1989 and on one of the photos a severe crack is clearly visible. The second arch is still there and the stranded couple on that night was most scared it might go too, although, when being on the rock there is no sign where it is, so they stayed as close to the fracture as it seemed safe.
In July 2005 an "Apostle" rock pillar collapsed into the sea. It is that heap of rubble closest to the viewing platform, a bit to the left. There are now only 7 left and the sandstone is being washed away by about 2 cm or 1 inch per year, possibly even faster, the more storms are hitting the coast.

There are now "AA" groups (ALDI [addicted] Anonymus), financed by the other major supermarkets, trying to wean off customers from purchasing products and bargain goods. I have tried, although, every time camping and outdoors articles are on offer, I have "shamefully" relapsed. Most of my vast equipment has originated from there and some items have been lasting for decades already. I want to purchase items somewhere else and it does not happen. So "stressful" ....
Australia was never really on my bucket list, but now it is! Love seeing all the odd places along the road - thanks for taking us along (and give me bad travel fever!!)

Australia has so many stunning places off the tourist list. When you come over, visit the big cities then go to the country. Talk to some locals and you will find incredible landscapes, 40000+ year old Aboriginal heritage sites, animals you would not believe - especially our incredible bird life. So much to enjoy and with some planning, it's no more expensive than the US.
No need worrying about Australia. One can spend cruising the State of Victoria for weeks trying to see every attraction, either natural or man-made ones. The Place to be.
During COVID-19 we were the least inspired ones venturing outside our state, not letting anyone in, wanting to experience this great location completely for ourselves for a while. Sorry for such a "ME"-ntal attitude.
Tasmania is well worth visiting if you can, Tasmania probably has the best natural scenery in Australia

Roos and Wallabies always do that, straight down the road for a bit, then across your path. It's why so many get hit, you won't notice them beside the road until they suddenly want to be over the other side, rather than running away like most other animals would. They're also never alone, so if you see one on the road, there'll be others nearby just as likely to jump in front of you.
first time observation driving at night setting. where i live that would be with extreme caution these days. drug cartel, random drive by shootings, homeless getting in harms way are all real concerns. refreshing to see this drive and only concern for their natural habitat.
I feel appreciative that you guys are making such an effort to see so much of my country.

The beaches in Australia are beautiful.
I live in South Australia. A few years ago I did a great ocean road trip that took a week. There are so many gorgeous little spots with forests, beaches and waterfalls along the way. The best ones don’t even have much signage and were discovered by accident. You could easily crawl along and take longer. There is so much beauty to see and experience. Enjoy, guys!❤
They are trying to see as much as they can in a limited time frame, and doing a pretty good job of it as well, honestly even if you spent a whole year in each state you'd miss so much, we really are spoilt living in this country

When you guys come back to Australia - make sure you go to Darwin and the Kimberley's - very beautiful and the people are great!
Gibsons Steps was awe inspiring....nothing like walking on that massive beach with those cliffs rising beside you to make you feel insignificant. In fact I think it was possibly the best part along with Loch Ard Gorge that we visited. It was all amazing and actually a couple of the best spots were on the side that doesn't get all the tourists, we had them to ourselves. Incredible.
I’m fairly sure that bikkie (cookie) was an ANZAC biscuit. They are a special recipe that is regulated by the government. They were made for the Australian and New Zealand troops in Galipoli because they are designed to have a long shelf life. They are obviously iconic and you should find some for ANZAC day tomorrow.
The recipe isn't regulated by the government. There are restrictions on using the word ANZAC for commercial production though. The use of the word 'Anzac' in the commercial production and sale of Anzac biscuits is usually approved, however the biscuits must not substantially deviate from the generally accepted recipe and shape, and must be referred to as 'Anzac Biscuits' or 'Anzac Slice' (not 'Anzac Cookies').
Oh, and they've been around for way longer than WW1. They have a long shelf life - essential in our weather and prior to the days of refrigeration and air con - which made them ideal to send to the troops. They were nicknamed after the fact.
@@cbjones2212 Actually, I think there is a set recipe to be officially recognised as an ANZAC biscuit. But that doesn't stop people from making their own variations.

Never venture off on a hike without water and a pack of ANZAC biscuits. ALDI does sell them in their permanent assortment, even in glutenfree. While in front of that box in the shelf, in winter or at cooler times, grab a pack of Chocolate Chip biscuits too. Available in glutenfree too.
I'm so glad you guys got to experience your first 'sketchy' Roo on the open road ! Yay, there'll be many more to come, I'm sure. If you're interested, two points can help. Firstly, when roos look at you at night you can see their green eyes - a bit light iridescent glow. This can help you slow to a responsible speed to help avoid hitting them. Secondly, If one jumps out in front of you, steer towards them. As you found out they can change directions so suddenly, if you try to steer away, you will find that they suddenly veer into your path. So steer at them so when they turn it'll be away from you. I have to agree, there is nothing worse than driving a car with dirty windows and a clean car rewards you with less problems! So there are my humble opinions! When the Apostille fell in 2005. I WAS THERE !!. Lots of dust and birds flying off the top of the sandstone rock.

The Great Ocean rd is a 232 km stretch of road which was built between 1919 and 1932 and is the world’s largest war memorial.
Built by returning soldiers it was dedicated to soldiers killed during WW1.

So much to enjoy and with some planning, it's no more expensive than the US.
PS kangaroos are really smart in their own way, but night traffic sends them into a panic and they veer blindly. Give them room, don't press them and always be aware they are moving around, especially at dusk.
I know you've already been to Perth but north Western Australia is unlike anywhere else in Australia or even the world. The nature in areas like the Kimberley and the Pilbara are like a different planet and would highly recommend if you find yourself up there.
Yes they should finish their great lap, continue following the coast with trips into the centre until they get back to Perth (I think they might run out of time though)

Hi Guys, yes the water is COLD! It is the ANTARCTIC Ocean after all. The fact that this ocean is on our southern border and one of the hottest deserts in the world is to the northwest of Victoria is why our weather changes so quickly, a simple 90 degrees change in wind direction can alter the temperature by up to 20 degrees Celsius, which is a LOT.
Its so good seeing my very own backyard, places that ive been to many times. There is another name for this coastline, its called The Shipwreck Coast, for how treacherous that stretch of the coast is. The Loch Ard Gorge was named after a Shipwreck that famously wrecked there. There was only two survivors and a porcelain peacock which is kept at the maritime museum in Warrnambool.

My theory for roos/wallabies at night is that the headlights destroy their night vision - so the only place they can see is the area illuminated by the headlights... ie directly in front of you!
Great video guys 👍I actually visited the Twelve apostles back in 1995 on a road trip with my then boyfriend for my 21st birthday, we lived in Sydney so flew into Melbourne and hired a car to visit the great ocean road, we actually saw the twelve apostles around the same time of day as you but this was in September, so it was the start of Spring. Back then there was no visitor centre and less people, we were driving the opposite way to the way you’re going, but ended up in Wannanbool for the night and then revisited the apostles again on our way back to Melbourne to return the car. It was Fantastic! I’m glad you both are having such a wonderful time. 😊

Yeah, that was a crazy setting. The pirates landed, climbed the stairs and the props team had rolled out artificial grass so they could storm forward into the next setting, the lush green lawn of Chirnside Park Mansion in Werribee. Anyone having seen that movie and going to Chirnside Park is wondering where the stairs to the beach are ... ("A few hundred kilometres THAT way, mate ...")

Congratulations on reaching 50k subscribers. You both deserve to have 10 times as many. Glad you went to Gibson Steps. Seeing the cliffs from below gives you a different perspective of rugged that coastline is. Yeah, it can be a bit scary driving at night. Not sure if you have seen the roadkill the next morning. Certainly if you do end up at Wilson's Promontory you will see a lot of it on the side of the road. As for the frogs, wait until you get to FNQ and the number of cane toads there are up there. Penguin parade at Phillip Island and Hanging Rock in Macedon are worth a visit if you plan to be in those areas.
I have to agree with Chevyo on the clean car thing! Thanks for the video. Whilst I grew up and live in Adelaide, I lived in Warrnambool for nearly 3 years and another 3 in Ballarat so really enjoyed seeing some familiar sights. Always loved Loch Ard Gorge.
Can remember doing the Great Ocean road on a family trip, me and my 2 younger siblings all suffering from " car sickness ". Will spare the details, needless to say my parents decided to fly everywhere from that trip onwards lol

I was at London Bridge the day it collapsed. People were stranded on the outcrop and had to be winched off (not me, I was back on the safe side before it happened, it happened very quickly).
You guys contiune to make me smile with your humour and laid-back attitude 😊 Glad you've seen the Twelve Apostles and London Bridge, with a wallaby and Victoria's infamously weird weather thrown into the mix! Hope you've left lots of time to see Melbourne; there's so much to do here. Unfortunately our good weather turned yuck today 😅
When I tried to see the apostles last year you couldn't get within cooee of the car park (look it up, but essentially you are further away than a cooee can reach). It was absolutely jammed full. It's a very popular area. The Great Ocean Road is fantastic though and it's excellent that you are taking your time. Another great video. Thanks so much.

A clean car has less wind resistance so goes better/ faster thats how l think too. l ride my dirt bike in the forests around Anglesea not far the great Ocean Road sign it's sandy very challenging like a motorcross track bumps n jumps 45klms long lots of 4x4 tracks, just got to watch out when a roo or wallabie jumps in front of you..after riding in summer we just got to the beach and chill temp usually around 24 ..when temp in Melbourne the same days is about 30 .

the Great Ocean Road is also the largest War Memorial to WW1. Returned soldiers were employed building the road. Originally the road was a rough, unpaved stretch of rubble, rather different to the bitumen sealed surface of today.

Love the Great Ocean Road, so many quirky little things you can do. We always make a stop at Lorne. One year we joined in the pier to pub swim, ...10 annual swims later, the local surf life saving club awarded to us our membership and medal into the 'Shark bait club'.
That model of the Mazda 3 is a good one. I dig that you gave it a cute nickname. I named the one I use to own "blue max", it was the same colour to yours I think.
Will look out for you in Torquay when we are there in a couple of weeks. When you get to Melbourne, try the Yarra Valley. Warrandyte is a lovely suburb in the gentle hills. And Healsville Animal Park.

Hi . If you can find it in your schedule, don't miss the Otway Ranges. I'm sure that there are other roads, but I took the road from Lorne to Colac years ago and loved the drive. Hugh trees, temperate forest (cold this time of year) and plunging valleys. Amazing Photographs and mystical country.
You’ll love driving through the Great Otways. If you have time get out and do one of the walks to a waterfall (but make sure you are well covered and prepared as weather can change quickly).

Yet another great watch. That bicky at the end may well have been a Anzac biscuit. Depending on the variation of the recipe they can be quite crisp. Have not been down that way for some years. Great part of Victoria though.
Wind and waves are eroding the Apostles. I walked across London Bridge before it collapsed. When it did collapse a couple had just crossed and to be rescued from the island remaining.

I ride the Gt Ocean Rd on my motorbike quite regularly. It's a very picturesque bit of road that isn't replicated anywhere else in Australia.
Of the 12 Apostles, which there were all of them when I was a kid, and back then in the 70's, no visitor centre, only 7 remain, and you can only see 6 from the viewing platform.
As a kid, I would go there a lot with my family, in the 70's. We lived in Mt. Gambier, so it was a short "country mile", to go visit. Still as beautiful as ever. Glad you got to experience it for yourselves.

Tia is gorgeous! Warrnambool is my old stomping ground. Pity about the sucky weather AGAIN. That coast is phenomenal in better weather. The 12 Apostles has always been a bit of a gyp but it still looks nice. I honestly think Bay of Islands near Peterborough has more to offer. Hard to say since the greenies cordoned off all the best places.
The Great Ocean Road is very beautiful, and to encounter a roo (or Wallaby) on your trip was fun to watch. On a side note, I hope you get to buy some famous iconic Tim Tams from any supermarket, but to keep your budget even lower, look for a Cheap As Chips outlest in the larger towns and cities for cheaper than even Aldis.
In Sydney do the Clovelly to Bondi coastal walk. 4hrs free parking for Blueberry in "Cloey". It will take about 3 hrs there and back.

I grew up in Warrnambool and still have most my family who lives there, it’s pretty cool that you got to see it, favourite places there are thunder point, tower hill, stingray bay & Hopkins river mouth

$1 high pressure rinse, $1 rapid foaming brush and then enjoy the free foam and brush. Follow that up with a $1 rinse. Tight ass (Cheap/affordable) car wash! $1 coin at a time is the key to being frugal haha.
Yes, the GOR is a beautiful part of Oz! ooooh the water IS cold, straight from Antartica. On your way to Wollongong check out the Kiama blowhole, then Wollongong and Flagstaff Point, head up to the Seacliff Bridge, then up to Stanwell Park for some hang gliding. An area as good as the GOR? Your opinion matters.💕
