Medvednica is a real treasure of Zagreb that sadly not many tourists pay enough attention to. It is the essence of being "Purger" (Zagreb native) - taking a weekend family hike up the mountain and then rolling down back to town before sunset, powered by almighty "mountaineer's beans" and beer you can get in taverns up there. (For true purger experience wear long red socks and short pants with suspenders). Actually you can even go skiing there in winter, but the best time is in high spring and autumn when the forest is really, really green and all the numerous springs are filled with water. Really, if you visit Zagreb for more than a few days and love nature, Medvednica hike is a gorgeous treat, almost unique to the city which is blessed with having an actual nature preserve almost within city limits. And you don't even have to go all the way up to the summit because there are lodges and small inns on the trails so you can take a smaller hike manageable even for small children.
Ahh next time we will wear long red socks and perhaps make Justin wear short pants and suspenders 😆 Thanks for all that info, super interesting and we agree- we didn't even know there was a mountain a few minutes from Zagreb, definitely underrated. Wish we could've seen it during it's green lusciousness!
