Many companies especially those larger ones are too invested in VMWare that it would take too much time and expense. Those who decided to move out can't do it overnight. It will require a strategic planning cycle over 3 to 5 years minimum.

I have worked in 2 medium-sized companies in Germany over the past few years, and we definitely will not be switching from VMWare to an alternative. With hundreds of servers, it would be too large of a transition, and the company also lacks the skilled professionals who could manage it. Additionally, VMWare does have some features that the competition doesn't offer.

I am a tech support engineer at a startup/scaleup. We use VMWare the deploy our batch virtual machine offerings. I'm not an expert on vmware, I just use it for basic tasks. Is it worth learning it in detail?

Yes, technically VMware is brilliant... however, with the price increase you'll have to do a cost/benefit analysis, other products are available (and catching up quickly). We are a VMware house and have started looking at moving to another product.
