    This is by far my favourite of the Origin series. If I was going to buy one, I'd buy this one! 😎 Sounds pretty wild! The next video coming up will compare the 50 to the DSL40CR from 2018. These videos were all shot the same day so apologies for the continued dark grey hoodie!

      Thanks for the review, Shane! Can't wait for your comparison, It's definitely a good amp, but miles away from the DSL40CR in my opinion. And I also might be wrong, but this amp doesn't sound like any Marshall Plexi I ever heard.

    Sounds alright, thing I've found with all these amps in your demos is the speaker size is off, 5W needs 10 inch, 20W needs 12 inch and I think 50w should really be used with a 2x12. I'd probably consider the head versions for the 20 and 50 and avoid the 5 altogether

    Love this amp! I got a high gain amp already! Going back to learn old blues rock from the 60s and 70s early Peter Green, bluesbreaker Clapton tones! Etc hopefully it capture that early UFO and thin lizzy tones

    I have this amp and it doesn't sound like this in person. I don't think they work well for the higher gain and compressed sound that the DSL does. It's a lower gain amp. This amp is amazing for the edge of break-up to gritty sound. Keep the master and gain knobs between 10 and 2 o'clock depending on your guitar and where how dirty you want your sound, and then use the volume control on your amp to dial it in. If you need more gain, it takes fuzz and OD pedals very well. I also noticed you had the boost engaged for most of the demo. I would recommend people try this amp in person to see if it is right for them. It's not as versatile as the DSL; it does one thing, but it does it well.

    Great demo Shane, I bought this amp for $400 in mint condition on a whim a few years back and love it, it's not going anywhere soon.
    The Origin is based more on the JTM 45, Bluesbreaker, Plexis' etc. Whereas the DSL is a more modern style amp, and it's great no doubt. May end up buying one of those as well down the road.
    The thing I love the most about the Origins 50c is the ability it to build your tone.
    Obviously, you can get gain tone by dimeing the amp etc., and using your volume and tone
    controls on the guitar. But it's also crystal clean as well, which I truly love.
    But throw a DOD 250, Boss BD-2 or a TS -9 in front and there's where the magic is revealed.
    Those who don't like to tinker, or have the confidence to do so, stay away as this amp is not a one-trick pony.

      @agharta42 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol can you stop bragging about buying this amp for 400$? people might expect to buy it for that much and it just isn't gonna happen unless you have a generous friend. it's a great amp though, just got one myself..

      How can you play this at household volume with decent tone? I’m considering modding one for gain but curious how to play it stock without volume.

  • @ValiBirzoi
    @ValiBirzoi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Man, at 3:45 when you tested the "clean" and said "it still has a little hair so I will turn down the gain" it clearly shows that the gain boost is engaged (the pot is pushed). So how does it sound really clean?? Otherwise great videos Shane! Keep up the good work!

  • @tybeatty5410
    @tybeatty5410 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This amp is cool! I got a used OR50 head that had a modification where it stays on the 50W mode (which is fine with me) and this amp actually got me back into the Marshall scene as well!
    I love the presence and tilt controls are really awesome and responsive, and it takes pedals really well.
    What really shocked and sold me was how it can go from rip-roaring overdrive to really nice clean tones all with just the volume of the guitar. Most amps I tried could do this, but there was always a lot of noise that took away from the “cleaner” tone. This amp could retain a good volume, and retain some good tone as it cleaned up!
    This is definitely a good affordable “plexi” if you dial it in right, and I love this thing!

I have been playing since 1973 and still have my Marshall 100 watt master lead, I haven't played it for years cause it is SO LOUD. I might get one of these to play on the low setting. At 4:03 you're calling the sound "pristine clean". It's absolutely not, something is clipping...hard. Did you clip the input of your audio interface? That would explain the fizzy sound throughout the video. I've heard a lot of good sounds come from this amp in other videos, but here it just sounds awful.

  • @thevoxofreason8468
    @thevoxofreason8468 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    They're pretty looking. Their sound isn't particularly good though. I've found all three to be fizzy. Maybe the head versions through a 2 or 4x12 would suit me. Honestly, it may just be the speakers they're using.

    • @OddBerries
      @OddBerries 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *TheVoxOfReason* i think it comes from the speaker i went to my local shop to hear how they sound in person, tried a 50 watt head into a 4x12 with greenbacks and had to take it home.. it sounded like everything I was hoping for and not this fizzy sound of any of the combos !!

      Odd Berries, I obviously suspected as much. I keep a 4x12 cab I had Avatar build me almost 11 years ago now. Had it made with Vintage 30's and it seems like it would be just what the 20w or 50w needs.

    Shane, be great to see a shootout between the Origin 50 and DSL. They've both got the same tube types, but I much prefer the DSL sound over the origin (and the cabs a little more compact). Although the origin 50 sounds way better than the 5+20W origin models.

  • @TheTexBlues
    @TheTexBlues 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Origin series is based on the early JTM Marshall's i.e JTM 50 etc .. The tilt is supposed to simulate when you would chain both channels together on the 4 inputs turn one volume on channel to a certain level and turn the volume on the other channel to blend the sound you want.. The amps naturally based on their design had a little more hair on the gain.. You can nail some Jimi tone without a 100w plexi and pissing a few people off .. lol.. I really wished Marshall would have just continued their Class 5 series maybe made a Class 10,15,20 head and combo variants and speaker sizes. Maybe a low watt plexi with actual 4 inputs and two volumes using either EL34 or KT66, KT88 type tubes.. The lowest watt 'plexi' Marshall makes is the JTM45 which is around 36watts but not in the price range of what most people can just spend.. As always i enjoy your reviews Shane..!!

    From Leo: Thanks for the review. I cannot find any sound from the Origin amps that would warrant replacing my old, beat up ValveKing 50. The noise floor is really sad, Bugera does better performance than that. If they were designed and priced at entry level, I could see the lesser product. For the price I think Marshall comes up short on the origin series.

    Shane, I have the DSL40C. I'm not impressed with any of the Origin series I've tried in local shops. Just me, I feel that the DSL40 has what I would call a Thicker Heavy sound not muddy just more mass if that makes any sense. I hit my favorite shop when they first opened and the manager didn't mind if I blasted the Origin with only us there. He and I agreed that the DSL 40C seems to move more air even with the same size speaker. Again just my personal opinion. I'd be very interested in your opinion since you have had access to both.

    Hey mate, got to do the comparison to the DSL. Just to let you know, I played the origin 20 head with a 2x12 loaded with a couple of celestion V30's last week. Got a much nicer sound. But I still think your DSL sounds better anyway. Something I can say with certainty though, I never realized how much difference a different sort of speaker makes until recently. I bought a custom shop fender deluxe with a celestion blue in it, and it's only 12 watts. It's as loud as a great 30 watt valve amp I have, and way louder than my blues junior. I couldn't believe it. Hope you do that comparison, Cheers.

    Thanks for the great review Shane when you first started started ripping with boost and gain the beginning is that straight in the amp or have you get that going through a pedal? Also if you guys said they don't retest a little but when they played it through a 412 with some greenbacks that took care of that. Could be they just match the ohmage different too. Are used to build cabinets with brand new Sebastian's I was using a lot of the G 12 8° when they came out. I don't think there is a such thing as a bad sounding Celestion they are top-of-the-line. I bought out sold cabinets the Yamaha and he was telling me about Eminence which they make a good lower price speaker but the thing about suggestions as they've been around forever and they're like blow poop I've never seen anybody blow one. I love this stuff 👍👍👍😂😃😀 I have a Kerry king White Marshall stack but I need something to carry around in for the bedroom I even thought 2 of these would be great as a small monitor or front speaker system etc.

    I have the same amp: 50 Origin Combo. The sound in this video is a bit fizzy vs the Andertons video and my own amp. The amp in the Andertons video is much warmer. I noticed the mic placement is very different and not sure if that is part of the difference. In this video the mic is on the edge/rim of the speaker and in the Andertons video it is just off of the center. I determined this from checking the location of my speaker in my combo. I am a novice and only pointing out the placement difference and not sure if that would make a large difference in tone.

    In this price range I'm not convinced the quality of the combo housing is up to par. Take the 20 or 50W watt head and slam it through a quality 2x12 cab. I have a feeling that's the Marshall sound we want to hear.
    Edit: Picked up my Origin 20W head today. As I assumed the head through my 2x12 cab with vintage 30's sounds great. No fizz like this video. Not sure why it sounds fizzy here. Definitely not the amp to buy if you want all your distortion from the amp. I set it up with a nice crunch and hammered it with pedals for more gain. Job done.

    Hi again, when you say you play mostly blues based stuff can you share a couple of examples, or is it original stuff from your band that you like better on the DSL? To your ears and your opinion, do classic rock and pushed clean sound better between DSL v Origin? Hmmm, my Origin 50 (Head) sounds NOTHING like this, even through a 1X12 (Fender HR Deluxe extension) cabinet. Mine is MUCH fuller, rounder, sounding like the Plexi's I grew up playing. So, I don't know WHAT is going on, with the one's you're demoing. :P If mine had sounded like any of those (THIN and FIZZY), I would never have even considered buying one. But, the head I got, sounds GREAT! I have a 2X12 Marshall cabinet, and a 4X12 1960A cabinet (Usually paired with my 100 Watt TSL). The Origin 50 head sounds great, through all of them. Is it a 100 Watt Hand Wired Plexi? NO! But, it's not 3 grand, either. However, it's a LOT closer, to one of those, than is indicated in these demo's. So, I'm really scratching my head, here, trying to figure out what's going on, with the amps you're demoing. I've watched your demo's of other gear, for quite some time, and usually enjoy them. And, while I don't think YOU did anything different, in your presentation, these "Origin" demos, were painful to hear! :( Hope it was just a "glitch" in the recording, or TH-cam sound???

    Just bought the same amp and a brand new Les Paul standard 59 model from Nashville. I was wondering how to set the amp for a crunchier sound more like iron maiden or Judas Priest I use it for practice in a basement and there are three other members in the band, any words will be appreciated

    Hi Shane. How about a review of the handwired series 1973x , 1974x , 1958x and the 1962 bluesbreaker.
    Good video once again mate; I think i like the handwired 18 watt and the bluesbreaker amps better. I guess those amps should be , they cost 3 - 4 times the price. jmho.. I have a Marshall JVM215C and it really is a "Monster". It's More like a plexi on 1st channel and a JCM 800 on steroids to melt your face off on the 2nd. LOUD. what!! Police won't even get through the front door..Just like that scene in "Next Movie" with "Cheech and Chong". lol. You won't need to overdrive this amp with a stomp pedal. Hope you try this series out, if you get a chance. All the best and keep the great content coming. tw.

    This might sound really weird for a comparison, but the two amps I’m considering buying are the Marshall origin 50 or the blues junior, i like them both and they’re not super similar so I’m trying to make my mind up but it’s so hard! Which would you recommend as my first valve amp?

    • @Elksniffer1
      @Elksniffer1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marshall Origin. Hands down. Never felt the blues jr was a good amp. I had 2 and without modifications it was flat. The Marshall is sweet from the beginning.

    Now that I'm not buying the Origin... this goes out to all.
    Has anyone played/owned the Vox Handwired amps? Any thoughts?
    I was thinking about one of the smaller ones; either the AC4W Handwired or AC15W Handwired.
    Thanks in advance!

    A huge improvement over the Origin 5!!!! By far the best out of the three amps, however as James Addison described in an earlier comment, all of these Origin amps sound fizzy when cranked up. For me, I would stick to what I have or at least the DSL. I would like to see a comparison between the DSL and the Origin just confirm what I heard. All this hype for a disappointing product! In Shane we Trust!!!😆😆 Cheers!!!🎸🤘🏽🤙🏾👍🏽

    Can see why Marshall avoided demoing the 5 watt at NAMM.. Honestly none of the current demos sound anything like the 20 watt demoed from the show? Not that it was stellar but it also doesn't sound like the actual production models... In that price point I think there are better options out there to be had!

    I am trying to figure out how you can play at volume=10 at 2 feet from amp? I have a Code 50 with volume=4 and Gain=3 at 5 feet, and it's on the verge of ear splitting. (Looking at getting a tube Origin, Studio, or DSL. Don't know which yet).

    Shane I like your reviews, been a fan for a while. Idk these origin series are either a big disappointment or perhaps your trying to achieve a tone different to what I was expecting... I think the hype has kinda created a let down. Most people saying that they sound fizzy and thin I think were expecting an affordable jtm 45 made in Vietnam with power scaling. Thanks for your reviews and videos👍 ps now do us all a favour get your hands on a small watt ceriatone
